Very Gassy 10 Week Old

My daughter has been on 3 different formulas, all with no success. She's currently on Alimentum, because that was suggested. She's been on for a month, but still is gassy! Any suggestions on how to ease her discomfort. The pediatrician wants us to go to a GI doctor, but I know infants grow out of the reflux and I don't want to subject her to another doctor!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I guess I never let you all know what happened. I followed the advice of a fellow mom, who suggeted the Lacto-Free and things never went better! Much less gas and spit up. Now that she's 4 mos, my pediatrician (actually, the PA in their office) has suggested the overnight bottle be replaced with water. When I do this (in the next few days), I'm going to use the Gripe Water to help with the gas, which never went away, but sure decreased.
Enjoying my 4 mos old immensely. It's scary how quickly it goes by!

I had the same issue with my daughter (now 2 years old). She was on Alimentum and the dr told me to give her one full dose of mylicon before each meal (bottle). That helped cut down on the tummy trouble. She slept better too.

All three of my kids were the same way. i used Mylecon for the first two, bu for the third I gave her Gripe Water. I worked great. You can get it at Babies R Us and some drug stores. It is all natural, so you are not pumping the baby with medicine. my pediatrician also wanted me to take my little ones to a GI, but my grandmother told me to let their bodies learn to adjust. Try putting her in different positions during the day while she is awake. y little one was very gassy and I decided to try what grandmom said before going through all the formulas. I personally think that changing the fomula will also make a baby gassy. With my kids once they had good head control (about 3 month old) I propped them in their exersaucer, wedging blankets all around them to make them nice and tight in the seat and I also put a small pillow behind their head in case they dropped their head back. I cound that when they were upright they were able to pass the gas. If you are not comfortable doing this, I also found that taking my little one for a walk around the block in the infant carrier would help. I would put her on my chest facing out and it really did the same thing as the exersaucer. It let her stay "upright" for a while. Just immagine how gassy you would be if all day long you drank and then layed in either the crib, swing or bouncy seat. I am sure you would also be gassy. Try and see how you are can keep her upright for a while and see if it helps. The true test would be to try it during one of her cranky times!! Good Luck!

Hi S.
This may sound utterly simplistic, but a lot of times babies just have gas and personally, I would leave it alone. Imagine never having eaten before and now all of a sudden going through this process. My daughter had gas all the time up until she was about 4 months old, and still occassionally has it as well (at 7 months).
Give her some Mylicon (it doesnt always help, but is worth a shot) and also holding her upright and carrying her around will help get the gas out (bouncing her around a little on your leg will be good too). Also, lifting her legs up to meet her chest can be helpful (I used to play with her as if she was riding a bike while laying with her back on the couch).
Everyone has their own opinion and I'm sure I would catch flak for this from other readers, but I think it might cause more problems to be switching formulas to find one that will be less gassy, when chances are this is an impossible task. Babies have gas, and there's nothing really to do about it except manage it until it goes away.
Hope this helps a bit
A.

she's only 10 weeks and you changed 3 formulas. not wise. you don't give her time to adjust to one. never switch formulas (unless a serious trouble with digestion). Stick to one kind of formula and deal with her uncomfort about the gas: massage her stomach, push her legs towards her stomach and out, use the "tiger" position when you put her tummy down on your arm and hold tight to your stomach, get her tummy warm. It'll pass, her stomach is developing, usually after 3 months most problems with little tummies are gone. good luck.

Myclicon worked wonders for my daughter when she was gassy. You will probably have to try other types of formula. You can also try diluting the mix-it may be a bit too much for the baby.It worked for me.Hope this helps.

Try Gripe water - can buy it at Rite Aid or Amazon.com. Saved my life with my daughter, now five months. Good Luck!

try Enfamil Lacto-Free formula. as the name suggests, it is Lactose free-free of the sugar that is hard to digest in milk. it saved my son from a lot of discomfort and is not as expensive as allimentum. i don't think similac makes a lactose free one, just enfamil.

Hi S.! My girls were gassy on all formula except for enfamil lactofree. I tried all the similac formulas that were out when my older girl was an infant and other brands also and nothing worked until we switched to the enfamil lactofree. I used the mylicon, karyo sycrup, everything! Once we switched to enfamil lactofree we needed nothing but the formula. It was amazing. Hopefully you'll find the formula that works well for your daughter.

We use to add anti-gas drops directly to the bottle instead of to the baby. Also, we used the playtex nursers with the drop in liner. You can push all the air out of the bottle before feeding. And they collapse as the baby feeds so very little air is introduced to the tummy.

Our son was very gassy also. We used Low iron Similac. It only comes in smaller containers & at times it's hard to find, but it's the same average price for the formula. We also switched to Dr. Brown's bottles and that really helped. They come with plastic pieces that helps keep out the air. Good luck :)

try taking anise seed from the spice section and making tea with a teaspoon of it so the water is slightly colored. pour over ice to cool then put in the bottle. If she does not drink it slightly sweeten. It will smell like licorice, but worked like a charm for my son.

Hi S.! I agree with Christine H regarding the position of your daughter. My daughter was extremely gassy and uncomfortable in the beginning - she used to wail anytime she was on her back. Before she had good head control, we let her sleep in her bouncy seat. We swaddled her really tightly, she loved that, and then strapped her in. I was nervous she might fall at first - but it was the only way she would sleep! She's a twin, and her brother didn't have any of these problems. They both were on Similac Sensitive and Dr Brown's bottles. I think some babies are more gassy than others - and I think the laying down position is a huge factor. Good luck and I hope this helps!!

Nutramigen by Enfamil worked with our son... We prefer the pre-mixed although it is expensive. You can get a free sample from the enfamil website.
