I'm so excited about your question. I thought I was alone! We use Motherease and love them. I will take your questions one by one but you're totally welcome to send me a message.

I looked at the Bumgenius and they seem nice too but I've no experience with them personally.

Motherease has the layers of fabric sewn in and a seperate cover. Bumgenius has a layer of fabric that you slip into a waterproof cover. As a result, BG is one piece and great for babysitters. Motherease is simpler to wash, will hold up longer and is more versital. Also, you have to disassemble (yuck!) the BG before washing.

I'm not sure about the cost but Motherease one-size works well from 10 pounds to about 25 pounds. The complete package has the extra thick liners (for night) and covers included. We had to buy a new set of covers every 3-4 months as he grew but they keep well and we'll use them again for our daughter. Now that my son is a big ole toddler we've invested in the large Sandy's diapers.

No, they don't leave red marks unless they're adjusted too tight. There actually very soft and breathable.

I would think ME would be softer since it's terry cloth against the baby's skin rather than synthetics.

I'm not sure but I think you would need the same amount of diapers for both because the BG cover gets soiled after one use, call to be sure. I only need 3-6 covers for the ME and that's generous.

I don't think hemp is as absorbant as cotton terry cloth. Hemp is has a big marketing push right now so be careful.

ME nighttime is amazing. Not one single leak ever.

I didn't like the way the cotton kept my sons skin wet so I got some microfleece and cut it into pieces the same size as the doublers. I layer it between the diaper and his skin. It wicks the urine right through but keeps his skin competely dry. I wash them with the diapers. Also, I sometimes use flushable diaper liners to make cleaning up poop easier.

I don't like the ME washing instructions. I prefer a dry pail method. Too much detergent will cause an ammonia odor. Rinse rinse rinse. I like line drying after a quick fluff in the drier. The ME hold up great. The BG polycoated fabric may be super special but it will never hold up as well as cotton in the wash.

However, you might have a few BG around for the babysitter and rely on ME most of the time. I've found 18-24 to be a good number of ME to have on hand. ME customer service is amazingly helpful. You can order just one ME and try it out before you invest in a lot of them. Also, they hold up so well that there is a big aftermarket for them on ebay. Get the bleached cotton, they absorb better after fewer washes.

I've been cloth diapering with my third child and love it. I wish I had done this with my first 2! I did a lot of research. There is a great website that gives all kind of reviews and advice called diaperpin.com. Have you visited it? If not, you should. Also, if you live in or near Bloomington you should consider going to Barefoot Kids. They have cloth diapering classes to help answer questions. You can also look at their selection. For me, I wanted to really touch the diaper and feel for quality, softness, etc. Another store that carries cloth diapers here is Natural Elements (on the square). I think they just started carrying BumGenius so you could check them out or buy 1 or 2 to see how you like them. I would definitely recommend just purchasing 1-2 of any diaper before buying a bunch. As far as the type of diaper, I think you will just have to see what fits your baby best and what your family likes best. I really thought I would want AOIs, but believe it or not I use mainly prefolds and covers now. I like Bummis Super Whisper Wraps, Stacinators, etc. I use Snappies instead of pins to secure the prefolds. I have some fitted diapers that are nice too. I am looking at getting more in bamboo or hemp. I don't really like the synthetic fiber options much. I do have a couple Fuzzi Bunz. A lot of people love these, but I am not so much impressed. I think they just don't fit my baby so well and I don't like the materials they are made from. You may want to consider getting more than 1 type of system (some for the baby sitter and when out and about--BumGenius would probably be good--I just haven't tried them) and some for at home (prefolds and wraps). This might be a more economical choice since start up costs can be expensive (although the diapers pay for themselves over time). Also, I would highly recommend buying some cloth wipes. They are so much easier to use then disposables when you are cloth diapering. There are a lot of WAHMs on Ebay that make them. Also, you can find tons of diapers on Ebay (new @ used). I have found this is a great way to try different types out. Also, you can sell your diapers there when all done to get some return on your investment. Hope this helps and good luck!

I haven't used either, however, from all the cloth diapering moms I know, I wouldn't get AIOs they take forever to wash and dry because they are so thick so you need more of them. You don't need as many pocket diapers because they dry so much more quickly.

My personal favorite is Bumgenius one size pockets. My tiny baby can wear them and my almost 2yr old can fit in the same diaper. Plus it's very user friendly.

We use the Bumgenis 2.0 one size diapers and love them. I have 2 kiddos in diaper right now a 1 year old ad a 2 year old and I have about 35 diapers for the both of them. I wash diapers about every other day. I like that I can use them the whole tie and I don't have to buy a different size as my babies get bigger. I had just as many questions when I decided to look into cloth diapering my son when he was 4 months old. I ended up going with fuzzi bunz, and I still love them (he's 17 months old). I like the idea of a pocket diaper better than an AIO b/c they seem like they would dry faster...I can put the inserts in the dryer without putting the diaper in all that heat that might damage the elastic. For inserts we use the microfiber ones that come with them, and for nighttime we use a Joey Bunz Hemparoo insert. He sleeps from 10 pm to 9 am and we don't have leaks (unless daddy didn't put the diaper on right =). I recommend getting just a few to start with. I got my first few from ebay (I know it's not ideal since they might be used, but truly, you just wash them before you use them and it's perfectly fine). Maybe just get 3-6 at first (this can be expensive if you got the BG). Also if you have hard water it won't get your diapers as clean as if the water were softened. We have extremely hard water here, so badly that i had to take a hiatus from cloth diapering b/c they still smelled no matter how many times I washed them. Now we have a water softener and when I wash them they come out smelling new. Also as she gets into eating solid food, they might require rinsing the diapers in the toilet...YUCK!
