We currently use G-diapers for our 10 week old daughter. We are getting close to needing to move up to the the next size and I am trying to decide whether or not to stick with them or whether we should move to an all in one cloth diaper like Fuzzi Bunz or Bum Genius.
Basically we don't mind the few extra steps the G's take and are pretty satisfied with the wetness protection and coverage but the inserts are pricey and since we only have 4 pants are doing a lot of laundry anyway, so why not do cloth myself once her poops firm up? I planned to buy 6-8 of the medium g pants as she'll be in them longer then she was in the small's so if cloth is the better way to go I'll hold off. I can really only afford to make this decision once!
Anyone tried both an all in one cloth dipe and a g dipe and have any insights for me?

Follow up question...I do breastfeed exclusively but my daughters poops are like the consistency of peanut butter right now and I really can't fathom just tossing them in the laundry as is. For those that suggested that, do you wash the diapers separately? I would think a lot of pre-soaking and rinsing would be necessary if I were to do them with her other clothes...
i was in the same position you were and did a bunch of research and chose to invest in the FUZZI BUNZ and so glad i did. by the time i went the cloth direction (more solid poops) my son was ready for mediums which fit a pretty wide range. they are well made and easy to care for. good luck!
hey L.! i have a 5 week old little girl and have spent much of the past 5 weeks exploring different diapers! i tried fuzzi bunz but thought they wee too hot and took too long to dry. i am currently using gdiapers when we go out and bum genius at home. i love them both. the g's are great because, unless there is a blow out, you can use the cover multiple times in one day. the bum genius are great because they grow with your baby. so they may be expensive up front but should last for the duration.
i've also only purchased the gdiaper starter kits and then extra inserts. this seems to be more cost effective. for $24 you get two covers, 4 liners and 10 inserts. the only bummer is my daughter only has orange and cream colored covers. oh well!
though the g's have worked well for me so far, i'm curious to see what happens as she gets older??

I am cloth diapering my second baby. My advice is based on my cloth diaper experience as I haven't used G-diapers. Cloth diapers are a one time expense since you don't continue to buy inserts. I use a combination of different diapers: diaper service quality cotton pre-folds with a cover (the least expensive of my diapers), contour diapers with a cover, and 6 One Size All-in-One diapers by Mommy's Touch which I absolutely LOVE(the most expensive of my diapers but so very soft and the fleece layer keeps baby's skin dry). I've also tried the Fuzzi Bunz pocket diapers which are also a great diaper. Happy Heiny's pocket diaper have a new one size diaper option. You may consider using OS AIO's, they are a bit expensive but they fit babies 8 - 35lbs so you only buy diapers once then they can be used for subsequent babies, re-sold, or given to a friend. A great site for diapering products and information is www.diaperco.com. The March/April 2008 issue of "Mothering" magazine has two great cloth diapering articles which you may find helpful. We used them all! So i can tell you that the all in oues didn't work well for us; just weren't absorbant enough. The other ones we used were Under the nile brand organic cloth diapers, with a wrap around over it. They worked fine for day but often leaked at night. They also take forever to dry, but overall we were happy with them. WE ended up using 7th Gen at night. Using disposable diaper liners made all the difference too; as then you can just remove and flush that part and don't have so much of a mess. Hope that helps a little. Good luck to you!
Having tied g-diapers, bum-genious, and fuzzi bunz, I definitely recommend going with the bumgenius or fuzzi-bunz. The bumgenius is really fantastic.
I have used both AIO and G diapers and I have found out G diapers are not made to be cheap just good for the world.
All these other diapers out there work but if you would like to never have to buy another set of diapers then Happy Heiny is the way to go they make a wonderful AIO one size dipaer.
and if you would like to go really cheap then take a prefold and fold it into the G diaper liner and then top it with a hemp linner (our fav. stuffens by Happy Heiny) it works great.There is also a website called(myuseddiapers.com) check it out there is great deals on there and I just saw some G diapers on there. You can get diapers supper cheap.
Hi there! I've also used many types of cloth and gdiapers. I did not have good luck with gdiapers, but I tried them after already using cloth. I found that they wicked and leaked all the time. I wasn't planning on using them all the time, mostly for traveling or days out. I would suggest switching over to cloth, but using gdiapers for outings or traveling, since you know you already like them. If you use them part time, then they won't be so expensive and you can use cloth, too. If you like the gdiaper covers, you could buy chinese prefolds and use them under the gdiaper covers and this would be a quick-drying, easy cleaning and cost-effective method of diapering for you. I use chinese prefolds with bummis, bumkins, prowraps, wool pants, and wiggleworm bottoms covers. I also have a large stash of bumgenius and Fuzzi Bunz. I prefer bumgenius to Fuzzi Bunz. I like to use the pockets during the day while I'm out and then use prefolds at home. Prefolds are definitely easier to clean and quicker drying. I also suggest using pockets instead of a true all-in-one because you can customize the absorbency and they dry much quicker. Also, you don't need to wait for your daughter's poops to become more solid before you start washing cloth. If your daughter is breast fed, you can just toss the dirty cloth in a dry pail and it will come clean in the wash. My son wasn't formula fed, but I think you just need to shake it off into the toilet if you do feed formula. If you're still unsure about cloth, you can usually find someone who is selling their diapers on craigslist or diaperswappers.com. To answer your follow-up question, I wash diapers separately from the clothes and do 1 load every 3 days. We have a mini shower (similar to a sprayer you'd have on your sink for doing dishes) from www.treecitydiapers.com hooked to the side of our toilet and spray the sticky poo into the toilet, then drop the diaper into a wetbag in the bathroom till wash day.
After that, I run one rinse cycle on cold w/ a big sprinkle of baking soda, then a hot wash w/ the teeniest, tiniest amt of Allen's Naturally detergent (many store detergents have irritating enzymes in them or cause buildup in cloth dipes) and an extra rinse and spin (to help speed up drying.)
Dry on low and that's it!
I loved Fuzzi Bunz and used them for my daugter for 2 years. They are pricey but you can get some deals- look around on the different websites, or try ebay. You will need to try out different inserts to see what works best for you. The micro fiber worked better than the hemp for us. Good luck and bravo for wanting to go cloth!

fuzzi bunz are awesome, so easy to use and care for etc. and you dont need to wait until your kids poop firms up. as for laundering breast-milk poops, just throw them in the laundry as is. once food is introduced you have to start shaking. good luck. we've been using a combo of fuzzis and chinese prefolds for 2 years and plan on doing it again with #2

You may want to alternate since the diapers you current use are so expensive. I use seventh generation and i have used the brand sold at whole foods market love them both!
I also used many kinds of cloth diapers but found that i like the Under the Nile the best with the diaper cover. They do take a long time to dry and i've found that it's easier to just put them on a clothesline for a few hours instead of the drier. They need a little extra at night so i use a regular cloth diaper as a liner. It's bulky but it works. You could probably even try using one of the G diaper liners inside the cloth diaper at night for extra protection. Hope this helps!
