What to Do About Son Acting Out in School

My son started all-day kindergarten this year, and all sorts of issues have arisen since he began. He is normally HIGHLY independent, but also tends to be a very happy boy, cheery, excited about everything. But in just a few months he's started acting out in class, on the playground, and even on the bus. Yesterday he said the S-word in class, and even tried to get a classmate to say it. He was also sat down in P.E. yesterday three times for misbehaving. The weird thing is, he's pretty happy at home (although on days like these he comes...

How to Care for Very Active Toddler When Ill?

Due to a severe chronic illness, I struggle taking care of all my 3 year old daughter's daily needs. My husband works 12-14 hour days so during this time, it all falls on me. Many days I'm too weak to barely make it out of bed. We have child-proofed our house to the max so she stays safe throughout the day, but she has to watch channel 2 all day since I'm in bed most of the time. We can't afford day-care since I am unable to work and all grandparents are elderly and unable to help out. We already have to rely on others for housekeeping...

6 Year Old May Be Artistically Gifted So....

Do we do anything about it? From what I've read online, that being artistically gifted doesn't mean much in school, other than the child will do some of the best artwork in the class. She has ADHD and hyper-focuses on her art and does some amazing stuff for her age. As far as school work, she gets bored quickly, writes her numbers backwards almost all the time and is pretty wiggly. Two questions: if we choose to medicate as she gets older for the more "boring schoolwork" will it affect her art? And two, do I bother talking to the teacher...

Lessons for 4 Yr Old to Prep for Kindergarten

This school year my 4 yr old son will be home, so I want to try to homeschool him. I was wondering if anyone has done this and how. Also, do any of you have suggestions on lesson plans and scheduling his day? I am not sure what he needs to know or be able to do for Kindergarten next year. We decided to keep him out of preschool this year because he was so sick at the last place that cost an arm and a leg and we are on many waiting lists currently. We figured to just teach our son ourselves, but I am just not sure where or how to start. I...

pre-K Curriculum Ideas/resources ETA

This is a question for all the homeschooling moms out there. I am not homeschooling, but I would like to make the time I spend with DD at home a bit more productive in terms of educational content than just playing the same old games over again and letting her watch TV while I cook. I was hoping that you could point me to some (free) onlne resources that I can use to come up with a weekly plan of things we can do together and some tasks I can let her do by herself. I am just not very creative and having a weekly plan of activities really...

Throwing a Fit at School and at Home !!

My son is 5 and thinks he is 35 !! He talks back to me and his father, throws things, and tries to tell us what he is doing and what we are going to do as well. Just today he had a letter given to me from his teacher saying that during choice time today he thew a fit because he could not play with legos. He threw a chair and then proceeded to throw a puzzle. When she told him that was not acceptable and she was writting a letter to me he proceeded to throw another chair. I picked him up from school and he wanted McDonnalds and i told him...

Gift Idesa for a Friend with a Special Needs Child

I have a friend who is mother to a beautiful little girl who has quite a lot of mental and physcal issues (MS for one, brain damage at birth, etc.). She is in a wheelchair and requires constant care. She will be turning 4 this year on her birthday and every year I am at a complete loss as to what to get her for her birthday. I was hoping some moms out there could give me some ideas. She of course does not play with toys as she is confined to a wheel chair. In the past I have bought clothes but I would love to give her something more...
