Swimming Lessons--should I Do Them Myself?

I was a swim instructor for 5 years and (obviously) want my two kids (5-1/2 and 8) to learn how to swim. However, I've heard that you can't teach your own kids to swim and just want to put them into swimming lessons. My husband thinks that I'm being lazy and "not wanting" to teach my own kids, but I don't want one more thing to discipline/push them on. What do you think?

All She Wants to Do Is Dance

Hi everyone,my 4yr. old daughter loves to dance and has mentioned she wants to be a ballerina. Does anyone know of an affordable place where I can take her for ballet or dance lessons of some sort. I'm a single parent so I can't afford too much on my own. I also thought about ballroom dancing for her but I don't know what's the right age to start that at. Any suggestions anyone? You all always give me good advice so I want to say thank you in advance.

Baseball for a Child

Ladies, we just signed my son up for baseball and he just turned 5 in December, and is in Pre K, so I believe most of the boys on the team are older than him. The problem is after the game the coach chooses a player to receive the game ball. This is the fourth game they've played and my son, for some reason, has to have this ball. Well, last night they lost the game again and the coach asked them who wanted the ball and most of the kids, along with my son, raised their hands for the ball. Well, my son once again did not get the ball. ...

I dont think I am going to le ther drive home. But I will take her to get more miles under her belt on dirt roads. How do I lesson the ache on her for not getting to do what all the other teens do? Or what do other teens get to do, I only hear from her about her friends driving habits. She says all the parents let their kids drive home from the DMV? I think...

Ipod but No Cell Phone? Worth It?

My husband and I do not have a cell phone, we don't have cable, and we don't have any gaming system. We have wireless internet and a desktop computer. We do not want cell phones or cable. We've considered a gaming system in a couple of years. I have been looking at getting an Ipod Touch 4G lately. My husband doesn't think I will use it enough to warrant the cost. Does anyone else out there have one that doesn't have any other gadgets? That feels it was worth it? How do you use it?

Sports on TV

Do you count sports towards kids TV time? I'm leaning towards no. My husband loves sports so watching them with the my daughter, and eventually my sons, is bonding time. My daughter and my husband curl up on the couch together and watch all sports. My twins are only 4 months, but my husband is looking forward to watching sports with them when they are older. I'm curious if I'm trying to justify the TV watching, or if it isn't a big deal. She doesn't watch much other TV on sports days, but without sports, she is usually allowed 2 hours...

Boys in Gymnastics

Hi Everyone, Ok, so I'm here to vent a little and to find out more information about gymnastics. My son is 4 and a very active kid. He is always doing summersaults, hand stands, etc. I thought it would be really cool to sign him up for a beginners gymnastic class this summer at our YMCA. I know he would really love it and it would give him some more socialization with kids his age (what he needs). So I told my husband and in-laws last night what I was going to do. They went on and on about how they didn't want him in gymnastics. ...

Dance Class Drama

Sorry if this is too long, but my 2 and a half year old is having trouble at dance class. This is a dance school that offers a tiny tot class for 2 and 3 year olds (but only in the evening) and promotes it with an open house and two free sessions. When I took my daughter, my son had fun too, so I signed him up with the 4-5 year olds. It is a combined tuition that is a "deal" when you add a second child. I only added my son because I was taking my daughter. Their classes are at the same time. To the issue, my daughter has been ejected from...

What Was Your Major or Career?

I am 3 classes from getting my associates degree in general studies. Then, I will have to declare a major when I apply to a university. I know what I don't want to do (I am horrible at anything math related), but have no clue what I do want to do. I will get career counseling and take a personality test (myers briggs) to help me narrow it down. But I wanted to know *real world* experiences in the job field and if it relates to your major at all to give me some ideas, because I am stumped. So, if you feel like sharing. What did you major...

What Is PRE-SCHOOL For?

I have 3.5 and 2.5 year old daughters. Alot of people ask me if they are in school yet and I say no. My husband is a teacher and I stay at home with the kids. Among the usual bills and expenses, we also give my mother-in-law $200 a month to help support her. We are trying to save every penny so sending the kids to pre-school seems like a luxury. Tonight my Grandson had his first practice for T-Ball. He is four and the other kids are way more experienced. My concern is they were using regular baseballs and bats. He enjoyed running around, but seeing these 7 year olds hit them balls worries me a lot because he hasn't got a prayer of even knowing what to do to protect himself yet. I assumed when we signed there was a 4 year old T-ball for beginners. To put him at a 3 year and some cases 40 lbs disadvantage makes me wonder if I shouldn't second guess myself. It's NO TV!

Hi Mamas, We have been boycotting television for years now. We do have a TV screen to watch DVDs but we don't have cable at all. Our children complained from time to time but just get used to it and spend their time on reading, sports and other activities. They do have controlled access to the computer so they can play games and watch other things online such as "Myth Buster". Whenever we happen to watch TV some where else, it seems TV has lots of mindless stuff, finely chopped by commercials. Some of the cartoons are graphically ugly...

Baby Who Watches Cartoons

I was wondering if their were any other mothers whose baby (under a year old) really liked to watch cartoons. They dont watch too many cartoons, something like 2 or 3 half hour cartoons a day so I dont really think it is a problem but maybe you guys have some info as to why it is so bad for a baby to watch tv. By the way, he isnt watching baby einstein...
