hey there, my son is 9 months old and has started to refuse his food. he will eat breakfast (rice cereal, formula and any fruit) just fine, but when it comes to lunch and dinner you would think he was dying and choking on it. he is refusing to eat any veggie or meat. when i give him any he sticks his tongue out (food and all) and makes gagging noises. very funny and cute but he needs to eat. so i started to give him adult food. im fine feeding him the meat and veggies. but to me there should be more and like dinner time. what would anyone suggest for side dishes. he likes mashed potatoesbut what else is there he can eat that does not invole milk?

What can I do next?

Hi, my son went thru the same thing. He used to eat w/the spoon, and he loved his baby food. All of the sudden he stopped...so I started mixing really good his milk w/his baby food just like I usally give it to him. Lunch time: mix it w/milk...and so on..at least for his frutis he liked one kind only. Give it time, my little one all of the sudden started eating little slowly, oatmeal ( I give him like Quaker, he loves it and the brown one), yogurt (he hated the baby ones, so I give him one that is a little bit healthy..sorry don't remember the name, but has a red label, just read all the labels). Also, eggs scramble put some cheese on it or break cheese in small pieces...even finger food, like dried fruits. But just give it time..and more than ever keep giving him his milk. oh, by the way when I started giving him his baby juices I always mixed it w/water at least 3/4 water and the rest juice. and keep changing it little by little. But that should be good too, even Juicy Juice....well, good luck, if you need anything else I'll be happy to help.

beans (all kinds- black, pinto, navy, red, etc)
egg yolk (make it scrambled or hard boiled or even make french toast with it)
pasta/rice- use baby food as the sauce- sounds gross but it may just work...like carrots instead of tomato sauce or just try different baby foods with pasta or rice to see what flavors he'll eat
avocado
baked or steamed: sweet potato, squash
green beans
broccoli florets
chunks of fruit
avocado

basically you can try giving him anything- see how he reacts- some babies gag and some do not. Mine started on table food at 6 months bcse he refused babyfood and he was FINE (he's now 13 months and actually started to let me give him babyfood at about 11 months, LOL)

Hi C.!

Will your son still drink formula? If so, that will at least give him all the liquid nutrients he needs! As far as food...cook your family meals and whatever you are eating, chop his up in the food processor, or blender! I say this from first hand experience! My son, who is almost 2 now was a VERY hearty eater. He would eat the baby food but it just wouldn't fill him up! He was eating...get this...NINE jars of baby food a day! Talk about expensive! It was so costly that I finally just started pureeing all of our food and he ate it up just fine! Of course talk to your pediatrician before you do it...but I'm telling you this saved my life! Turns out the baby food just wasn't fulfilling to him which is why he would eat and eat! You asked what else is there that doesn't involve milk...is he allergic to milk? If he is not, then simply puree everything and add a dash of milk to help make it mushy! If he is allergic to milk, which is the case with my son, when you puree the food, then add a little bit of apple juice, or light fruit juice!

I hope this helps!
Also, I am a rather new mom to Florida, so if you are in the Central Florida area and would like to chat it up more often with another mom, please drop me an email at my personal email: ____@____.com Being new in town with babies is hard so I would love to meet more moms!

Just keep offering a variety of healthy "adult" and/or baby food. At this age, it's more about how to eat than what they are eating. As another Mom pointed out, they still get their nutrition from formula or breast milk until age 1.
If he'll only eat fruit, maybe mix it with something else to get him used to a new food. (I know, sounds gross, but it can work!) Put something new on the back of the spoon and fruit on the front (or alternate bites) and you can "trick" his tastebuds into the new food.
The most important thing is not to worry. (And don't think that he needs to eat "a meal" like you and DH yet... plenty of time for that still!) You'll probably go through many different finnicky phases. Kids will eat enough to grow. (Your pediatrician will let you know if it's an issue!)

I have a 22 month old, 24 lb daughter... who even though is on the light side (I wish she'd eat more...) is very healthy and developing just fine!
Good luck!

You can give him anything you want. Peas, carrots, green beans whatever. Just make sure it's nice and soft for him. My son loves creamed spinach. I like the frozen vegetables for him because they cook nice and soft. Also frozen veggies don't have any preservatives. The gastroentologist told me at 7 months they can eat whatever you want to give them. Maybe you should go to Sweet Tomatoes, they have so many different things you can give him. My son and nephew always love the chick peas and pickled beets. Oh another of his favorites at breakfast is a spinach, tomato and cheese omelet. It's protein, dairy and veggies all in one dish. Good luck!

At nine months my doctor said to start giving my son things such as yogurt (yobaby is great), cottage cheese (likes okay), and regular cheese (which he still doesn't like). I also started feeding him regular oatmeal and lots of regular fruits and veggies. For dinner I usually just do frozen corn and peas with some kind of protein... he loves chicken. Also try Morning Star brand veggie bites. I also buy the whole grain organic waffles and do those with some cream cheese. you can see if he will eat mashed up avocado too... lots of good fats and some protein. Hope that helps.
