What to Plant in a Border?

Spring has sprung and I want to improve my yard. I have a 1 foot wide, 10 foot long curvy border along the sidewalk to my front door. There is also a 5 ft bordered oval around a tree in my front yard. The previous owner put down white rocks. I''m sure he liked it, but I don't! I want to reclaim these areas for life, not rocks. So, what to do? I could plant summer and fall blooming Bulbs. I thought about planting bulbs now but putting annuall flowers on top, so, I would have some color now until the bulbs come up in the fall. I like the perenial nature of bulbs, but that all seems like a lot of work. I could put down decorative grass ground cover plants. There are also the ground cover ivys. A little more expensive, but I love the look of ivy. Ground cover plants seem like a low maintenance and economical option, but don't do anything to add color. What advice do you have for me before I head to Lowes this weekend?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I'm doing a row of Star Gazer Lillies and lilly of the valleys along the back and ornamental grass in front of those. I hope it's as pretty as I'm imagining.

Hi,

Being brand new to TX, we were told by a Home Depot employee not to buy our plants from them. Not sure if Lowes is the same. He said the plants have been sitting for too long. I don't garden, but my husband does. The HD guy told us to check out a book called Neil Sperry's Complete Guide to Texas Gardening. We did and love it! We are also a fan of his on FB. We have posted questions and he answers them pretty quickly. I would check out his web site too. You may find some helpful tips for your situation.

Happy planting!

I love hostas. They thrive with almost no work and come back bigger and more full every year. You can split them and share with family when they get too big. The varieagated hosta is my favorite and would add a color dimension. You could also do monkey grass or marigolds. I love the idea of something like tulips or lillies as well.
Good luck and happy planting!

I love day lillies to border something. I have a little garden next to my stairs that is a half circle and it's bordered by day lillies. If you trim them all year they keep flowering. Low maintenance.
