My brother and sister in law are having a big and fancy sweet 16 party for my niece THIS Saturday evening. I'm stumped at what to get for her as a gift. She's a great young lady but has everything and is in fact receiving a brand new car from her parents. Any suggestions besides money or gift cards, I hate giving those?

What can I do next?

What about donating to a charity in her name? She's so fortunate with all that she's getting; perhaps she'd be open to helping those less so?? Another idea is maybe a savings bond. Or maybe a membership at a local musuem?

Get her a photo album or a memory book that she can fill out through high school- if you are crafty- do some pages for her that she can fill out.
A nice classic book of poems would be good- if she is the kind that would appreciate it- or maybe a keepsake that belonged to you and you are ready to pass on. It doesnt' have to be fancy or expensive- just give from the heart!

When all else fails - put together a theme basket! In this case, think "new car" stuff:
Road maps, tire gauge, hands free phone attachment, Armoral wipes, Windex wipes, ice scraper, Fix-a-Flat, emergency kit, a list of what to do in case of an accident, disposable camera for taking photos in a fender bender, a cute scented car deodorizer, and some gift certificates at the car wash. Look at the book store for cute books like "Road Food" that showcases diners, etc.

How about some kind of jewelry that signifigant, like silver charm braclet with a special charm?? All the girls love "juicy coture" and they have some great things! A fancy anc cool keyring maybe even engraved, or her favorite designer,( Juicy, coach, etc) for her new set of keys. Think about things that will add something special to what she already has, or add to the special sweet sixteen theme. You will come up with something awesome!! Good luck!!

I have an almost 15 yr old (12/27) with "everything".

She LOVES gift cards, ITunes and shopping.

SO, how close are you to this child & how much $$ do you want to spend?

At 13, we gave our daughter a special piece of jewlery. We've contributed to her collection over the years and as she gets older, what we give her is nicer.

She has some very sentimental pieces of jewelry that are now put away for her kids someday and other pieces that she enjoys wearing now.

She also has a Christmas ornament collection that I started the year she was born. Very special ornaments for her to take with her when she moves out on her own. Collectibles from friends and family.

Good luck...we'll be facing 16 TOO SOON.

G.,

As being not to far older than her and having all my friends be in the same situation in HS when I went since I was at a private school I would give her a day at a spa. If you have the extra money.

Like a pedicure/manicure what sort! They love that at their age! At that age its all about, money, giftcards and things they really want to use. I rather give someone what they want then have them smile and say "I love it" and the item sit on their shelf till they can rewrap it in the future. If that makes any sense? Just tell her your going to take her to a spa for a day or why not get her items to decorate her car like a steering wheel cover with matching seat belt cushions etc if you know her style.

Give her an experience instead of a gift. Give her an afternoon. Plan a day with her parents where you kidnap her and take her to do things. A great day would be that you first go to a movie (or an activity like putt putt golf or go cart racing) then you go eat lunch somewhere girly (like a tea room) and then you go get a pedicure together somewhere. You can make a coupon book for her wrapped gift and add silly things like a bib for lunch, nail polish for the pedicure, fake tickets for the movie, that sort of thing.

What about a shower wrap that is embroidered? Or maybe an emergency car kit that has jumper cables, reflector blanket and emergency cones? Another idea would be a monogramed key chain for her new keys (can you tell I do monogramming! Sorry, it's the first things that come to mind!) You can check out my website at www.institches.biz if I can help you out, or maybe you'll just get some ideas. Stationary might be nice since she will have so many thank you notes to write after her party.

You have received a lot of wonderful ideas. If you are still searching for a gift, my sister and I have a company called "Countless Keepsakes" and we make customized keepsake boxes, jewelry boxes, picture frames, and tote bags. You can look us up on Facebook under "Countless Keepsakes" to see pictures of our creations. We do a lot of jewelry boxes for the older girls with their initials on them and design them in their favorite colors or school colors, etc. Hope this helps! Good luck to you.

Even though you don't like giving money and gift cards - a 16 yr old wants just that - this gives them independence and a choice - what every teenager wants. . I had a pretty nice upbringing and the charms and whatnot - unless she likes that kind of stuff - or has a charm bracelet already - ask her mom then you could get her a new charm for it - didn't mean anything to me until I was 30 and went back to it. .

but that could just be me.

Depending on where you are located there is a great charm bracelet store in Arlington by the Parks Mall. It is called Dixies. A charm Bracelet would help chronicle her life. This place is cheaper than Asley Averys, I have had mine for over 4 years and I keep adding more, the charms run from $4-$10. Good luck.

Wow, what great responses you have gotten! My first thought was a James Avery charm bracelet. You could give her the sweet 16 charm and then when special times come around, another birthday, graduation, etc, you can just give her another charm to add to it. They have so many different charms and what girl doesn't love jewelry?! :)

Well, what sort of girl is she? What are her hobbies? You can do something as simple as giving her a journal with a note about how important it is to be introspective. You can borrow the family albums and put together a montage of her through the years and frame it. Both of these ideas are cost effective and heartfelt.
You can also give her an "experience".
What is she interested in? If she wants to go into a particular profession, give her a day with someone in that profession. There are plenty of professionals who would let a student "shadow" them for a day to see what they do.You'd be surprised with who you know. If she is interested in fashion, I bet you or someone you know has a contact and you can give her a day with someone in some aspect of the industry. Just start to think "out of the box".
However, if you want to do something splashy, you can have a professional makeup artist give her a makeover. You can call one of the local professional modeling agencies ( Kim Dawson) for a reference.

Get her two tickets to an upcoming play or to a band she likes.

If you are extremely close to her and can afford it, you can always take her on a weekend getaway. One mom I know could not afford to leave town, but she booked a limo, had her daughter picked up and taken to a hotel downtown where she met her and they pretended to be tourists, taking in a play, the museums, using only taxis and the trolly. They had a blast. Good luck.

How about a gift certificate to give a micro-loan to someone in a third world country to start a business? You can look at web-sites like kiva.org to purchase a gift certificate. That way she can look at all her options and decide which person or family to invest in. Over time, the investment is paid back and she reinvest in another person.

When my best friend's daughter turned 16 I bought her a beautiful china tea cup and saucer and wrote her a poem about being to old for dollies but too young for champagne so she was stuck in the middle but maybe if she would use this cup to drink her tea she would feel more grown up. I then gave her another cup of the same pattern for following birthdays and the teapot for her 21st. When she married she chose a china pattern that was very plan so she could use the cups with it and also registered the salad plates that match the cups so she has matching dessert dishes. Every once in a while she will send me a photo of her friends enjoying a get together having refreshments with my cups. Good luck

you could always purchase a gift certificate for a fashion photo shoot to model all of her new birthdya outfits and even pose with her new car. What 16 year old hasn't pretended she is a model?! There are several photographers on this list you could check out. You can also view my blog and price list at bmjevents.blogspot.com if you wish. If you are interested email me at ____@____.com and I will be happy to set you up with a gift certificate.
Good luck! Teens are the hardest to buy for especially if they alreayd have everything.

Something more personal then like an inscribed keychain medallion which includes her first name, cell number (so someone could call it if she lost her keys), noting "Happy Sweet 16" , etc.

Rig it so the parents will have a satillite trained on her at all times. (just kidding)

When my neice turned 16, I bought her a cross that matched her room decor. She loved it and still has it in her room today (at age 21).

I have a 16 yr old neice that has everything, we gave her a gift card to her favorite book store and trully she was so excited, they hate to get gifts that mean nothing to them or that their not interested in. She loves shopping and reading so it was perfect! Find her interest and give her something that goes along with that. Whatever you decide to give her she wll at least remember that you gave her something. Every girl thinks her sweet 16 is suppose to be the best!

How about a personalized necklace pendant? It doesn't have to big or expensive, when I was 16 I got a pendant and necklace chain that was very simple but since it was personalized, it made it very special - there are lots of "sweet 16" type jewelry and someday she may be able to pass it on to her daughter (if she can keep up with it for that long). Almost everyone loves personalized items . . . Good luck!

G., You probably have decided by now, however, here is my 10 cents worth. :) Get her a silver charm bracelet from Dixie's (located in Arlington) or any other place. They have a sweet 16 charm and you could purchase another charm with the year 2009. This way she remembers the year she received it and the occasion. You could add 2 or 3 more charms that would let her know it's from you or something she would like (small car charm to match her car). They have tons of charms to choose from. I think Dixie's had a promo going on,check out their website.

Since she will be receiving a car for her birthday... the best gifts would be something for her car... perhaps a road hazard kit with flashlight, air pump, and such. Or a cleaning kit with bucket, air freshners, rags and soap. Or a gift certificate to a local car wash/detailer.

Perhaps even monogrammed car seat covers or steerwheel cover.

On-line places like www.snapfish.com offer all kinds of neat items you can make with photos and its easy to do. Most teenage girls love getting pics of themselves!!!! Hope this helps.
