I'll start....the recommended orthodontic treatment plan for my 12 yr. old son to have braces to improve a slight overbite and crowding, which will mean braces for a few years with elastics....is:

Dental records: $495
Total treatment: $6990

Total is $7485.00 (ouch)

Insurance will cover $1500

What can I do next?

Definitely shop around. I have found a big discrepancy in dental pricing based on how fancy/new the office is. If they've been around longer, prices are usually better.
I don't recall paying a records fee when I had mine done a few years ago. They also offered an interest-free monthly payment plan.
Get a few estimates/consults. Consults should be free

My daughter is 17. She had phase I at seven and phase II at 12 for $6,400 total (Delta had a $1,500/lifetime orthodontia). Phase I was so easy wth the expander that the second phase was less than a year. So much easier for her.

We paid $5200.00 to our orthodonist for my eldest daughters mouth but she had two impacted teeth and tork bars and chains were involved. That price did not cover the $1100.00 to the surgeon for gluing the bracket on the impacted tooth. (Our orthodontist actually got real upset when he learned the surgeon made $1100.00 in two visits and he had to make his 5200.00 over five years.)

Know that the wages are not as high in the south as they are in most parts of the country...it was a HUGE investment but her teeth are BEAUTIFUL! She's never had a cavity so there's no silver in there and she now has smile she is comfortable with!

Well, it's about $1500 but it depends on the treatment plan and my kids are young they will need later after all adult teeth come in braces again. My kid is about to loose some adult teeth due to his dental problem so we 1/2 treat it now then the rest later total will end up being around $4000. It also depends on the treatment plan and the amount of time you are under treatment. My son is 8 and his treatment for the first half will be about 9 months then after 12 he will need treatment again for the rest of his teeth another 9 months later.

My 13 year old just got braces last month. We shopped around and there was a $3000 difference between the high end and low end of pricing in our area. Here is what we ended up agreeing to pay (after about a $1000 discount from insurance).

Dental records: $280
Treatment: $3000 (approximately)
Total: $3280

He should be in braces for about 18 months.

Each kid is different but I'm pretty sure that my SD was about $5200 total, but her brother was more (doc for SD was out of network but flat-fee and the other guy for SS was in-network but nickle and dimed us). I changed jobs and got ins. to pay $1500 for SD's work.

@ $6000. This included everything from palate expander to retainer in the end. Our insurance company paid $1500 per kid.

It's about 8k in our area as well.

My husband's mouth is the real mess. We have to pay about 4k per tooth to get it fixed (implants). Since a crown/bridge is ALSO 4k (and has to grind down healthy teeth), we're going with the implants. He needs 3-4 implants. Ouch.

We paid $5600 and insurance covered $1500 of that. But that includes everything from palate expander, braces, and retainer. My SIL had to pay two times for different phases for my niece who sucked her thumb past the age of 6. Shop around, different places charge different amounts. When I had my implant done, I got a total of 3 different prices - $4400., $5600., and $2200. When I asked the dentist why the price differences, he said it is a matter of materials (name brand vs. generic- made by the same lab by the way) and if they made the crowns on site or had them made by an outside lab. I went with the cheaper place and am actually thinking of switching dentists long term. Good luck

I know a woman that paid over $9000 for braces for her son. This covered through the first year with adjustments. My BIL paid about $6000 for his step son to get braces, includes adjustments for the 2 years. There is such a huge difference in prices depending on the area you go. The funny thing is the place my BIL went I would have expected to cost more than the other due to its location. I will be checking them out when my turn comes for my kids.
And the lower priced place let them make payments while the other told them to charge it or sign up for some payment plan to charges interest.

My son, now 11 - got braces at 8.5.

Our charge was $3,200...that included EVERYTHING (molds/impressions BEFORE AND AFTER, retainers, visits, etc.) ...Our insurance covered 50% of it.

Sounds a tad bit of overcharging if you ask me. We had crowding and cross bite - he had his braces on for 18 months and goes back every six months. He MIGHT need a second set as his mouth matures more - and we'll have to pay again - but I'm okay with that.

Shop around. Get other quotes and opinions.

Our daughter just got her's off and I think hers were about $4500-$5000 which included everything. 100% out of pocket.

When our now 21 year old had his, we had a different insurance and my husband had some executive policy that covered more. Our total out of pocket for his was only $1000. And his mouth/teeth were a mess!

I've taken my daughter to two different orthodontists in the Glendale area for consultations in just the past few weeks. The total for her treatment is about the same - around $6,000, but each dentist had a different treatment plan. Definitely get a second opinion.
