What Clothes to Wear

1) the cord will probably be covered with a 'band aid' looking thing.
2) use the diapers with the cord notched out.
3) My kids were born in June and July - dont cover them up too much; just put him/her in a onesy and a little receiving blanket and it should be fine. Especially in the heat down here; light layers.

He will be able to wear anything. Dress according to the weather. The diaper is going to cover his umbilical cord, so don't worry about it being caught on anything.

He will be fine in a onesie. It will be too hot to put him in a sweater and long pants. If you think he is cold, put a blanket on him.

I am also due in August(with my third). I would say onesies are your best bet because it is
a very hot time of year and they are comfortable for him and convenient for you. They will NOT irritate his umbillical cord at all. You can always use socks if you need to. Also the lightweight, thermal "waffle-weave" blankets can be stored in your diaper bag/car to cover his legs if he is in air conditioning. For nighttime, I prefer the very thin cotton one piece sleepers because I dont like to use blankets when they are so little and in a crib or bassinet. I still use those same sleepers for my one-year old who tosses and turns and her blanket falls off. Hope this helps and good luck!!

Congrats on your upcoming bundle of joy. I just had my first March 6th. The thing that I've found that I love are those footed sleepers that button up, that way you don't have to undress them completely to change their diapers. Don't worry about the umbilical cord, it will pretty much be covered by the diaper. Those sleep sacks are great for sleeping. My son didn't particularily care for the gowns because even though they have the elastic at the bottom, his legs still got cold. I was always told to take whatever you are dressed in and add a LIGHT layer to them until they get a little older and can regulate their own body temperature. If you take them outside and it's warm a onesie should be great, but just keep a blanket on hand to cover them in case they get cold. They will have some sort of signal that you will recogize early on to let you know if they are uncomfortable; either too hot, too cold, or what they are wearing is uncomfortable. Just watch their cues. And I don't know if you've decided on diapers, but I love the Pampers Swaddlers; leaks are very minimal if any especially if you are having a boy!

Hi A., and Congratulations:) Baby boys are sooooo wonderful, Ima a mother of three boys and my youngest is 10 months. Are you here in El Paso? If you are, we both know how otit gets in August. Thefirst day you bring him home,put on him whatever YOU like, most new parents have a special going home outfit, and they are usually so swaddled in blankets, it really is upto you. But after that for the first few weeks, long sleeved owns are great becaue easy access to diapers, and they have the handcoverings. Believe me when I say thelittle hand coverings are wonderful! Newborns often scratch their beautiful faces becasue their fingernails are so perfectly sharp, one little swipe and thats all it takes. If its a real warm day, onesies also are great. I've always heard, whatever we as adults are comfortable in, the babies need one more layer. I hope I've been elpful, if you need anything else, I'm happy to chat. The rule of thumb I used for dressing my brand new babies was dress them in the same type of clothes I am comfortable (temperature wise) in and then add one layer. If you're wearing short sleeves and pants, then put baby in a short sleeved onesie and pants plus wrap him up in a receiving blanket. My first was an august baby and she came home in a one piece pajama set that covered her feet.

Congrats on your soon to be baby. As I can remember I think they say that newborns are always cold at first. They are trying to get used to being in the outside world now. I would put him in a light long sleeved long pants outfit. Gerber makes them in a light cloth material instead of the heavier ones, they come in packages of 3. Also what I found the best was the little newborn shirts that button in the front, they kind of over lap, they are made by Gerber also. I got them at babies r us, you can find them where all the onsies packages are. They also make then in a short sleeve. At first it can be a little intimitading for a new mom to put clothes over a newborns head. Good luck and I hope this helps. I think after about a week they say as long as you are comfortable in the house then they are. But for me my hormones were all over the place and I was always hot. But remember babies hands and feet are always colder than their body. I can't stand when I see newborns in public with no socks on. Good Luck

HI! Congrats! I have an August baby too, I can't believe he will be one soon. It comes so fast. Anyways, I put my guy in a long sleeve outfit too and we lived on a humid hot island at the time. I kept him pretty covered when he was first born just because we had the a/c on all the time. You won't be having him out in direct sunlight that often so I think being covered is good. Just trust your instincts. Newborns can't control their body temps so you have to be prepared. Some good advice I got was if I was hot (or cold) that is how the baby would be feeling. So dress how you would dress i guess. It will be fine!

When they're that little, sometimes it's easier to change their diapers when they're wearing one of those outfits with an elastic bottom. It doesn't have feet, but it's long and the elastic opening at the bottom keeps their feet covered - plus the sleeves have the fold over option so they don't scratch their faces. Since it will probably still be pretty warm outside, you might want think about using one of those or even the t-shirt with long pants set (Carter's has lots of those). However, remember that you won't be outside with your newborn for very long - just to get in and out of the car - so you'll probably want to think more about the temperature inside the car, and then inside your home once you get there.

I brought my daughter home in early May, so we hadn't experienced a true heat wave yet, but it was still warm outside. She wore footie pajamas and a hat because the car and the house was cool. After a few days, when we started walking down the street and back, I put her in a onesie and made sure she was completely shaded while we walked (no sunscreen until six months old). The onesies didn't bother her umbilical stump because they were pretty loose - in fact, I would recommend those over pants since the elastic might rub (if you're worried about it that is). Until the stump falls off, you'll probably have to fold down the front part of the diaper so it doesn't rub on the umbilical stump, and the onesies are loose enough to make it comfortable for the baby.

Whatever you dress your baby in to go home from the hospital, I would recommend that you buy at least ten onesies for daily wear. My daughter wore them every day, and the elastic bottomed nightdresses at night, until she was several months old. Good luck with your new one!

Congratulations A.! In response to your inquiry I believe that small t-shirts would best accomodate your new arrival. Since the umbilical cord does tend to get caught on clothing at times, your baby would be better off wearing clothing that does not interfere with the area. Since you are due in August lighter clothing would be more appropriate for the season - of course being prepared with a receiving blanket is ideal since he is new born so he won't be too cold or hot.

I see a lot of mom's bundle their newborn babies in the summer and personally I never did this...my son was born in May and my daughter in June, and you know the weather here...it's already hot by early May. Just keep your baby dressed comfortably...I love Gerber's t-shirts...they are great, especially while your son still has his umblical cord remnants...that with a diaper and some socks is all he will need for indoors, of course with a light blanket. Again, check with your OBGYN and pediatrician...if you haven't found a pediatrician yet, ask your OBGYN to recommend one. They will be happy to answer any of your questions and concerns.

I brough all 3 of my children home in a little hand made sweater, blues for the boy and pink for the girl.
I always found sleeping gown for them was fine.
When you get them home, T-Shirts and Jumpers are good.
they are really to little and young for short and stuff. I always Had My baby's in T-Shirts and the gowns with the draw strings.
Don't Dress your baby to warm. I was always told, dress them as the weather permits. Don't over heat them.
Aug will be hot, so just don't dress the Baby to warm.
What is temp in Aug where you are?
My Babys were born Mat and April. I had two on teh same day May 7th Year apart, And one in April.
So it wasn't real warm at that time, but August sounds like it will be.

I know I've always heard that if you're comfortable then your baby is comfortable. The common misconception is to bundle your baby up too much and they get overheated. I had my son in May and I put a long sleeve onesie on him and swaddled him in a light blanket. Anything you put on him should be fine as far as the umbilical cord is concerned, as long as it isn't tight or anything. I think the long sleeve outfit would be fine. Newborns can get chilled easily though, so don't just do a onesie, he should be covered, just not too much.

I put my daughter in onesies or pajamas and did not have any problem with the umbilical stub. Also I brought 2 outfits to bring her home in, one short sleeve and pants with a sweater just in case, and on long sleeve one. After all, this is Texas and you never know what the weather is going to do.

I have always been told and and have followed this advice... if you are comfortable they will be too so dress them similar to you. I did use the little gloves and hat for the first few days but that was it. When they are that small I would dress them a little cooler bc they will probably be swaddled in a blanket anyway.

Well Congratualtions on your New Arrival. As to what to have him wear on that Special Day.. Let me just say that you want to find for him it's umm like a liner that will only cover the area this will also help in the event of his cholicks this wraps around his stomach... I dont remember what it's called but you can find it in the section where they'll have the onecies, Oncies is a shirt that fits to clip at the bottom.. Now you may be provided with some bandage for his umbelical cord.. also you mentioned you about his dressing up. Well, you want to always keep you infant fully coverd due to the fact that they are so small they cant tell you they are cold. So yes if you already have a one piece outfitsoutfit that covers his feet is perfect.. you may also want to to get him his little mittens.. ones he's been brought home yo will notice the temp in your home and may want to see if the infant has cold little hands if so you may want to keep these mittens on and maybe cover him with a receiving blanket.. this will help keep him comfortable... Do cover him with receiving blankets at all times anyway because they do have delicate skin and will be cold... I hope this helps. hmmmm maybe little cap for head, socks/booties, gloves ( sometimes babies tend to have long finger nails to keep them from scratching thier face little mittens? are placed over hands) oooh also lots of blankets to swadell baby,keeping limbs close to helps make him feel secure. Ohhhhh, also maybe the one piece outfits that are really long and it has elastic on the bottom. ( this makes it easier to change baby exspecially the first few months when baby eats and sleeps and wakes up a lot. GOD Bless

I used the side snap shirts for my son, who was born in Sept. Carters makes these great pants that have the feet and they are elastic at the waist. They are easy to put on and off. It provided easy access the the umbilical cord, and i didn;t have to bug him to change his diaper. Don't worry about the long sleeves, as you will have him swadled in a blanket anyway.

I will probably put my boy, due end of August, in a one-piece, that sounds good, I dont think it irritates the umbilical cord too much, I never had any problems when I had my first. Also they have those cute layettes that are onepiece with the elastic on the bottom, I really liked those... and i think they make short sleeve onepiece suits too, short arms but with the footsies but i think the regular ones will be just fine.

Congratulations! I am due in two weeks with my second boy, fourth child. Like others have said to dress them in what you are comfortable in and then add another layer. Babies like to be warm and snug. That is what they are used to, think for the last nine months he has been at a comfortable 98+ degrees...swaddling up your baby like they do in the hospital is the best way to keep your little guy comfortable and happy..there is a great video you can get at the library The Quietest Baby on the Block and I forget the doctors name but he talks about the five S's to a happy baby during its 4th trimester (up to 3 months) it is swaddle, sway, suck, shhhh, and forgot the other, but anyway its a good thing to watch. But I am rambling now, but another thing to think about is picking up a cute premie outfit to bring him home in. They tend to "drowned" in the 0-3 or newborn outfits the first week or so....

August in TX is outrageously hot. I would not put your newborn in pants and long sleeves. A onsie will be just fine, and if you want shorts, that would be ok too. The onesie does not irritate the umblical cord. You need not worry about that. However, over dressing and then sitting in a carseat will overheat your baby. So be careful!! I know it' s fun to dress them up, but be careful not to overdress.

what to put on the baby depends on where you live. i live in san antonio, texas and i'm due in august too but here, it gets really hot. i'm just planning on onesies and maybe socks. to sleep i'm planning on the thin material sleepers instead of the heavy ones and pants didn't even cross my mind. the summer seems to last till at least nov here. as far as the onesies rubbing the umbilical cord, i think they sell little t-shirts and if you can't find them, with my 2 year old i cut the onesies to make them into tshirts. the umbilical cord scares me. good luck.

well if it is hot or warm outside to you then it will be hot/ warm for the baby. both of my 2 oldest kids were born in sept (2003 and 2006). i put things on that were more weather appropriate. you dont have to worry about anything rubbing on the cord. nothing will really bother it unless it gets pulled on. i am also due in august so i know what you feel like even though i am a little more expierinced. every time i have a new little one i feel like a first time mom all over again. so just take it easy and everything will be fine:)

You will do fine. At first babies are 10 degrees colder than us at any given point but that changes after a few months. Your outfit should be fine since the baby will be mainly indoors.

Amiee - I always took more than one outfit with me. Both my boys were winter babies but I wanted options. You can always dress him in short sleves and bring a blanket. Huggies Newborn Daipers have a cutout for the umbillical cord.
The nurses will change the baby if he/she is in the nursery but it is your job when he/she is with you. If you are breast feeding the colostrum will be enough to keep the baby full until your milk comes in. The nursing staff shouldn't feed your baby unless you or the lactation specialist ask them to supplement your feedings. By the way I would ask to see the lactation specialist as soon as you can once the baby is born. They are a great sorce of information on what to expect when you are breastfeeding and can help make sure your baby is getting a proper latch to prevent problems. Don't worry, you'll do great. =)
