Last night was not our favorite. Our almost four month old came down with her first green buger congestion. She isnt coughing but very congested. I try to get them out with the nasal aspirator and She only has a temp of 99.5. She's definitely not very happy. i did give her a little of childrens tylenol so the fever would not go up and I put some baby vicks vapor rub on her chest. Any other ideas?

What can I do next?

You can try putting Vicks Vapor rub on the bottom of her feet and then put socks over it befor she goes to bed. I know it sounds crazy it but really works! An old Amish friend of the family told my mom about it. I have tried it with my daughter and it works wonders. I have no clue why putting vicks on the bottom of feet works, but it does!! You can also let the hot water run in the shower and sit in there with her while the door shut so she can breath in the steam. It might help loosen everything up.

I would take her in. She is pretty young and has a fever with green mucus? She could have a sinus infection. Never hurts to have her checked out. Use a humidifier at night and when you take your shower keep her in the bathroom with you with the doors closed so she gets the moisture from the shower.

definitely set up a humidifier to help her breathe and sleep at night. And I agree to see the doctor.

Hello M.,

For a more natural approach you can put 10 drops of eucalyptus oil in a humidifier. So it can disinfect her room. Also help her breath threw the night.

Hi M.!

I would bring her into the doctor's in the morning just to be safe. When mucus is yellow or green it is usually a sign of an infection. The doctor could tell you for sure so you don't wait it out too long in case there is an infection. I feel for you - I think right now you're doing everything you can!

M. -
I have a daughter, 21 months now. But we also had our first major cold at about 5 months. One thing I remember is it lasted FOREVER. I think she still had buggers after almost a month! The doctor said that was normal. Especially since their noses are so small, it takes a lot of time to get rid of the ickies. What you are doing sounds perfect, the only thing I could suggest more is a vaporizer. And when you give her a bath make sure it's nice and steamy in the bathroom, I use a "vaporizing" bath soap. Also, if it sounds like it's going into her chest, you can raise one side of the bed, so she can breathe better. This never worked for us, though since my child always seemed to do a 360 and then be upside down.
Patience and lots of love always works too ;) Good luck.

Another good idea would be a vaporiser, they work great. I've always been told to alternate between tylenol and advil or ibruprofen, that way they are not just getting tylenol all the time. I do that for my kids and it seems to help them out

We use saline drops/spray to help clear out our son's nose. It seems to loosen things up. I have read that you can make your own....but you can buy them from the drug store for a dollar or so.

Hi M.
You can turn on the hot water in your bathroom shut the door so it can steam up then sit in there for about 15-30 minutes. This helps it loosen up and she will start to cough it up. Trust me it works...
Hope this helps.

Sounds like you made good choices there. About the only other thing you can do for a child so young is to run a humidifier in their room at night, make sure she gets plenty of fluids (breastmilk or formula, or pedialyte if she isn't feeling very hungry). You can also use a saline nasal spray to help get some of the congestion out. Good luck!

You might also try a few drops of saline in your baby's nose. It always seems to help my daughter.

Have you tried baby saline drops that go in their nose? My dr. recommended them, and they really helped when my daughter was congested. I think they're called little noses.

Hi M.,

I know what works best for my 2 year old and has since he was a year old. I use a vaporizer in his room all winter long. When I put him down for the night, the vaporizer gets turned on and in the morning he isn't as congested and the bugers are much easier to get out of his nose. Sometimes he has neither one. You might try this, just to see how well it works.

Good Luck!

Since Vics can be a little strong on the skin they have Vics vapor plug-ins for the wall. There is also a brand called Sudcare and you can purchase refills too. Some of them come with an actual night light. The vapor lasts for 8 hours. I ave used that in tandem with the humidifier for my kids and it helps. Green doesn't always mean infection..However, if her fever persists or green color gets darker and congestion doesn't go away after about 10 days follow-up with your pediatrician. Good luck.

I just bought the Bebe Sounds electronic nasal aspirator. It's about $25 and worth every penny. My trio doesn't like it any more than the manual one but it's works a LOT better. I ordered it from One Step Ahead.

Also, have you thought about using Gaia's Childrens Warming Vapor Rub? It's all natural and contains no alcohol which might be better for your little one's tender skin. You can find it online but Whole Foods carries at certain locations.

And I keep a cool mist humidifier in the babies' room and that also helps.

Definately a humidifier and if you have a wedge or something you can put under one side of the mattress to lift it just slightly that will help too.

Use saline nose drops and get a vaporizor if you don't already have one. They really work!
