We're going to be in Houston for a week at the end of this month (January) and I was hoping for suggestions for kid-friendly, reasonably priced, accomodation. We'll be 3 adults and 3 children under 5 years old.

Any ideas for fun things to do other than the zoo?

Thanks,
B.

Go to the Johnson Space Center, but do not go on the weekends as it is way too crowded. The place is awesome!

Regarding accommodations, check into Embassy Suites and Homewood Suites.

The Children's museum is a blast, and the zoo is top notch. The space center is OK. You may see if TUTS has any shows going. Downtown Aquarium, Moody Gardens is nice right now, Kemah Boardwalk is a short drive away. The Galleria has ice skating.
As far as any kid friendly accommodations, I would just find the best priced normal family friendly establishment. I would try to stay closer to downtown or a neighboring town like Katy or Sugarland to stay away from the 'bad' parts of town. Houston is big, but there are bad areas. Grew up and still live in the area, so feel free to PM me if you find a place and want to make sure it is an OK area. Have fun! We're always surprised to find out what is in our backyard when we discuss family weekends. Oh, Schlitterbaun Galveston has an indoor, year-round water park!

There is the Cockrel Butterfly Center at the museum of natural history. Moody Gardens in Galveston. The Aquarium Restaurant in downtown (go mid day, there is an aquarium, rides, etc). The train in Herman Park (by the zoo)

I think there's a very nice aquarium (the one Eliz B above me suggested). It's been years since I've been there though. Have fun!

I would say the children's museum for sure! my two loved it. As for hotels, I usually do embassy suites, or holiday Inn express. Both of these have a nice complimentary breakfast that you can take up to the room if you like. Embassy usually has a heated indoor pool. They both offer cribs if you need too, but what we usually do is take th matress from the roll out bed in the couch & lay on floor beside our bed cause we like getting a king. Or if you do put kids in other double bed, I use the extra pillows in the room under the fitted sheet to make instant bed rails so I don't have to worry about them falling off.. both have a fridge so you can keep drinks & snacks handy and both usually have the pay per view movies, which I love. If you do go out towards Galveston way, Moody gardens does have a great aquarium!! Houston Zoo is good, but not a lot of indoor areas, so cold in winter & hot in summer.
