I would try some of the stage 1 fruits. (Apples and pears are more plain/light for the first fruits and easier to digest than some of the others. If that doesn't work I would try prunes, but she may not need those if the others work.) Fruit has fiber which helps adults stay regular, and it's the same for babies. Fruit actually has more water in it than veggies, so that might help too. If Anaiah is in any pain from the constipation, I would call the doctor, but if not, just try the fruit and see if it works.

Hi Rose!

I had the same issues with my son. Do you give her cereal with the fruits?? Try to stick to some prunes for a day and oatmeal cereal. My ped. said it was normal for them to become consipated when trying new foods. It will pass!

Hi Rose,

You said you introduced veggies, as in more than one. Remember you should only introduce one food at a time, that way you can determine if there's an allergy or any other type of problem - in this case, constipation.

Try giving her lots of water to help with the constipation.

Stop the veggies for now. It's propably too early. Depending on your child most peditritions don't recommend starting foods until 4 months and then it's just cereal.

Good luck.

What Veggies did you give her? Also 4 months is a bit young to start, the WHO suggest (highly recommends) to exclusivey nurse/bottle feed for the first 6 months... Your baby's tummy/intestines might just not be ready or solids. Try nursing/bottlefeeding for few more weeks then try again.
Not quite sure what to tell you about how to help with the constipation, massage her tummy (clockwise), nurse a lot.

Is your little one able to it by herself? That would be one of th sings that she i ready for solids. Don't rush the solids, baby needs to be ready.

I got a 7 year old that had her first veggies when she was 6.5 months old, didn't like it and we tried again 1 month later and she ate them with no problem. Now my little one (3.4 months old) is exclusivly nursed and I won't even bother with solids for another 2-3 months. I knw she gets all she needs from me.

Hope I was able to help a bit!

Switch to pears, prunes and applesauce baby food. Those will help her poop. Also, rice cereal and starchy fruits and veggies can make constipation worse. Try oatmeal instead -- it has more fiber and helps get things moving properly.

We started solids much later, at almost 6 months per our peditrician's recommendation. When we did start, it was cereal first for every meal then veggies. Her system wasn't ready before then. I know some feed solids earlier but waiting with my daughter, she only encountered mild constipation when she tried rice cereal. Stopped the rice cereal, no constipation. Also when she started fruits, I started with prunes. She still eats prunes as her "desert" every day and no constipation ( now 16 months old).

Hi Rose,

No worries - I think that's fairly common. It happened with my son. I know some folks feel strongly about no food until 6 mo. I know in our case, our son was just hungry and the breastmilk wasn't enough anymore, so we started feeding him solids at 4 months and he totally thrived on it.

Just introduce strained prunes as her next food. And believe me, you'll get an explosion of poo within a day. (It was actually kind of funny, because it really was an explosion - and my son looked really amused by the whole thing.)

Good luck!

IMO 4 months is way too young to be feeding veggies, try giving her cereal first for a couple of weeks and then fruit. Veggies are binding.

My pedi at the time recommended starting with Orange foods...and pears, bananas... skip the green veggies until they're about 9mos.. peas raised cain with my little guy, my pedi said that their little digestive tract was not mature enough to handle the gas that's caused by the green veggies

Also, really at 4 months of age the best bet is either rice/oatmeal cereal, then slowly integrate or mix stage 1 food in with it. Right now their main purpose with 'food' is only to learn how to eat, they should still be getting all the actual nutrition from either breastmilk or formula

Why did you start solids so early? The guidelines recommend waiting until 6 months because her digestive tract may not be ready.

doctor's usually recommend beginning with cereal first, and not usually until the baby is at least 6 months old b/c their digestive tract is not mature enought to digest foods unless their is a medical reason to being solids early - low weight etc. i think you shoud contact your doctor first regarding any foods you want to begin with your baby, if you haven't done so already.

Rose,
Her little body isn't up to the task of veggies right now.

Are you still breastfeeding or giving her formula? At least 6 months on the breastfeeding is recommended.

Liquid for the constipation is the only thing I can think of that will help pass things a little faster than anything else that is solid.

Good luck,
M.
