Spinning off - Hair Care Costs...

Okay - I see that Call Me Mr Mom asked a question about a dispute he and his wife were having over the cost of hair care.

I spend $50 for a hair cut and blow dry. I color my own hair. So that is $10 for the box? I think!!

So how much do you spend on hair care?

What can I do next?

Interesting to see the difference in prices around the country.

I would have to go back and look, but I think my wife's normal hair cut is about $90 with tip.

Mine? $20!! Men have it easy!

My hair is my indulgence. :)

I spend $150 every 11 weeks to have my hair straightened.

I spend about $85 every 5 weeks on color.

I tip a huge amount on those services, and I've gone to the same person for years, so she rarely charges me for haircuts. On the rare occassion that I do pay for a haircut (maybe once a year), it's $80.

Since Groupon I have not paid over $25 for a hair cut. Groupon has some great stylists that normally charge $50 to $60 and I get it for half price. I don't color my hair. I have very thin hair and don't want the extra stress. My mom over dyed, over permed way over did things to her hair back in the day and now she has VERY thin hair, like you can see her scalp. I am afraid to do processes in my hair I don't want to lose it like my mom did!
But like Theresa I don't mind spending the money on my daughter. I will pay full price for her hair cuts. And she won't go to Supercuts!

I got my hair cut before my wedding and haven't had it cut since. I go to Sallys for my dye so we are talking 6 dollars a pop, once a month. Shampoo/Conditioner 35 every four months. So total 200 if I actually get my hair cut.

it depends. if i have extra $$ I will spend about 100 for a really good cut. Generally though I will spend around 35.00ish I don't get my hair done that often, though...just when it's looking horribly shaggy. I don't color it.

My hair cuts cost me $20 - if I get color at the salon plus a cut, it is usually around $60. But I have a short pixie-type hair cut so if I want to keep it trimmed, it's about every 5 to 6 weeks. I might get it colored 2 or 3 times a year. I don't mind coloring it myself, but my hairdresser always seems to give me grief, or appear to disapprove, if I do. Sheesh!

I no longer color (which I did at home), so it's $30 including tip once every 6-8 months (I keep my hair long but freshen up the layers or get a few inches off once a year or so). She blow dries my hair. I usually go in with damp/wet hair and it's never been an issue to skip the shampoo.

Spending, in general, varies SO MUCH from area to area. Where I am is probably comparable to you, but my cousins in Jersey pay less for many things.

I rarely cut my hair. Maybe, every 2 or more years?? I do trim it myself, though. My hair is naturally wavy, so it looks great long. When it gets shorter, it's half wavy/half curly. It doesn't look so hot!! When I do get my hair cut, I spend a good amount of money. My girl charges about $80. I do it so infrequently that I need a good, professional cut. It allows me to go a long time in between cuts, with just split end trims at home. I don't color my hair, when I go in the sun I get highlights. I assume I will color when or if I go gray. Hopefully, that won't be for a long time...I'm not ready for the cost and maintenance!!

$35 plus tip for a shampoo, haircut and blow dry. I go about every four to six months. I have a hard time fitting the appointment in after work or on the weekends. Being a working mom, I just want to spend my extra time with my son and my husband. I also can't stand the salon chitchat so I use my husband's stylist who speaks almost no English.

Other than that I watch for my hair color on sale. Last time I got two boxes for $7. Otherwise, it is about $10 a box. I color about the same frequency as I cut my hair. Quite frankly I would rather spend the money elsewhere. I look good enough for myself and my husband.

I am in Plano (burb of Dallas) and I pay about $125 for cut and color. Sometimes I will get low lights and that adds about $50 to my bill.

I go about every 8 weeks.

In October I splurged and got the CHIEnviro treatment for $150 and it was so worth it. Super good conditioning treatment.

My hair is all one length, long, straight and very dark (American Indian heritage)

I spend $20...$15 if I go on Tuesdays. :) I don't color my hair....yet.

I used to only pay $10 when I went to my husbands best friend's wife. (In her house) But, they moved out of state.

So after that I started going to a girl I went to high school with who opened her own little shop.

Both of them do a great job!

Not much. I cut my own hair. I bought some good quality hair scissors a few years back. Probably cost me about thirty dollars.

I'd say I spend about 20 a year on product, another 10 on bobby pins/hair ties.

Shampoo and Conditioner probably 25 a year? Hard to tell, because the whole family uses my stuff.

My hair isn't very thick so I don't need much shampoo or conditioner and it is easy to cut.

I get my hair cut a the local barber shop for $12. I go once or twice a year. I color my hair myself. I used to go to the local salon, but when her price went up to $32 with no wash or blow dry, I decided that the barber could do it... my hair is trimmed straight across... super simple.
YMMV

Not that I don't care about how my hair looks but I'm pretty much happy if it isn't in my face or bugging me. I'm also kind of boring in this area. I gave up after the 80s and the gazillion perms (time and money) to get some life and bigness to my hair. Now I feel there's only so much you can do with middleaged lots of fine hair that has some wavy patches in it. I have colored it myself and found a combination I like but have let it grow out a bit for the time being. If I get the urge, I'll cover the grey but I'm so utilitarian about it I found an exact combination of Clairol hair color from Sally Beauty supply that matches my non gray hair. I also alternate getting my haircut from a friend who's good and a person who does an awesome job but is very inexpensive. I'm also bad because I'll wake up one day and realize my bangs are bugging me and cut them myself. So, I probably spend $30 a month including the ocassional bottle of hair dye.

Personally if I have extra money I'm going to spend it on Fabric or Yarn. That's just me though.

I can see where Mr. Moms wife would feel stuck. If she's working it's going to be hard to find a new stylist especially if you've had to search for the one you have and like.

It depends on what I'm doing with it. If it's a cut and color, then I spend in upwards of $250.

If I'm doing anything with installation of extensions then I can spend up to $300 just for the installation. Hair can cost anywhere from $80-$300 depending on the length, and how much I'm having put in.

I have my extensions in now (braidless Malaysian installation, 14" human virgin hair) and it cost me $800 for everything.

ETA: $800 is cheap considering if I had it done at a salon it would be more than $3000. And I wish I spent $800 on four months of groceries! We spend around $800/month!

Haircut is $22, so $27 with tip. I don't color yet, but will probably do that myself.

I buy products at the grocery store, so around $5 for hairspray or whatever styling goop I'm into at the moment. I buy a liter of shampoo at Costco for $13

Exactly why I stopped getting highlights and lowlights. As much as I loved the look, I hated the expense. Plus I like my natural color. I don't color it at all - yet. When those lighter colored hairs show themelves, I'm sure I will color it then.

I get my hair cut 2-3 times per year, and it's about $40 or so, including tip. Sometimes more, sometimes less...depends on what I'm having done.

I do buy salon quality shampoo and conditioner though, but I always get that on sale as well.

When I was single and competing in a pageant in 1986, I paid $120 for a perm, cut, and style plus $25 tip from the top stylist in the area. Now he charges $250 and up.

Well, as I said in my response to Mr. Mom, I don't "do" a lot to my hair. I have a simple cut and my hair is medium length and very straight. Not even cowlicks. Just very straight as a board hair, that is past my shoulders, all one length. (used to have layers and bangs etc at various times in my life...but never anything crazy or any colors added--well, highlights when I was 20).

Anyway, I don't need to go to a fancy salon for what I have done. It just isn't necessary. But I can't cut my own hair. I also hate making appointments for things like this, so I like to be able to walk in when it fits into my schedule on the spur of the moment--so I usually go to a place in the mall. Not a "super cuts" type place, but like a Penny's Salon or something along those lines.
I get it washed, cut and blow dried (which I don't really even like them to do the blow dry b/c I never like all the products they use in it--I don't like using a lot of product)... and I rarely spend more than $40. I go about every 2 months. Sometimes longer if I get busy and don't make it a priority to get in and get it cut. Never more often than every 6-7 weeks.

My son gets his cut more often than I do--but he HAS to. He has shorter hair that needs keeping up more than my relaxed simple cut. Somehow, my hair always takes longer than getting his done, does though. :( And costs more! His is like $14 plus tip!

I get my hair cut maybe every 3-5 months at $20 each time. I have extremely curly hair and only shampoo once a week. I have been told to shampoo no more than once a month, but once a week is really hard enough. My hair product is $30, about every 3 months. I color my own hair, using sally's product, runs me about $6 every 3 months.

Pantene Shampoo and Tresume' Conditioner...$4 each at the Dollar General. I use White Rain Mousse or Curl Shaping gel ($2-4).

When I dye my hair, I usually get the brand that's $3.97 at Wal-mart.

Wal-mart said it's $15 no matter how much they cut off...so I could get 1 inch or all of it shaved off for the same price. Didn't like that. I usually just trim it myself.

Two years ago a friend of mine gave me money to pamper myself with a professional cut and color. Spent $70 and felt guilty. It looked good, but I could've gotten something for the kids for that amount and been happy.

Well, you know it's a regional thing, right? I'm sure the "good" salons in Pittsburgh aren't as expensive as "good" salons in Los Angeles, right?

For me? I switched salons when I started to work PT and couldn't bear to spend $45 for a cut/blow dry AND $150 for the highlights. AND a $30-40 tip on top of all that!

Now it's around $150 total. But I don't need highlights every cut--maybe every 3 cuts (5-6 mos)

So.....maybe $600/year?

I was going to ask this question myself. I live in NJ. My hair is not quite shoulder length and I color it myself (maybe $7-$8 every month). My haircut usually runs about $28 and I usually tip my stylist $8. I only have to get my hair cut about 2-3 times per year. I'm feeling pretty lucky that I don't spend that much on my hair.

I also have my 12 year old's uni-brow and upper lip waxed at least once every 3 weeks or so. That runs about $12 with tip. I think I spend more on her hair/waxing than I do on myself - lol.

Hair care is my splurge and my husband knows it. I am frugal in just about every other facet of life. I am a serious couponer (not "extreme" like those knuckleheads on the show but serious). Point is, I choose where to spend my $ and hair care is one of those. I feel old when my gray comes through (and my hair grows FAST so it comes through quickly). I spend between $75 - $100 when I go (depending upon whether or not it's a touch up or lots of color is needed). That includes a 20% tip. My trip to the salon every 7 weeks is a mini-vacation - LOL!

I go to a walk in place and get my hair cut and highlighted about every 4 months. It costs me $100. When I lived in CA I had an amazing lady who had a home studio and she would cut, color, and highlight for only $50. I hate having to pay $100 for it. I used to color my own hair, but now that I just do highlights, I can't do it myself

$120 every 6 weeks for a cut, color, and highlights and that is a bargain. I am not good at doing it myself. I am prematurely gray so it is necessary. I don't spend much on myself so this is my only luxury. I told my husband to be glad he can cut and go and stop complaining.

If I can get my friend to cut my hair (she's a hairstylist), it's $20 at my house. If I go to the salon, a cut is about $50. I color my own hair since I just use dark brown.
