Seeking Good Pre-school in Anaheim Hills Area

My son will be turning 4 in October, and he has already been through tiny tots through the city. Although he enjoyed it, I think he needs something more than just twice a week. I want a preschool and not just a daycare. Do any of you know of any good schools that emphasizes academics as well as socialization skills? I don't want my kid to just be babysat for 4 hours a day everyday. I want him to learn things and get jump started on his education.

Also, what are all of your opinions of Montessori vs. non-Montessori schools? There are about 4 around me within a 5 mile radius. I've heard mixed reviews.

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone for the input! I checked out Hillsborough, Amerimont Montessori, Hephatha and Vineyard. I chose Vineyard.
Hillsborough seemed to focus a little more on the academic (which I liked) but they are incredibly expensive. They hit you up with a lot of upfront fees (registration fees, enrollment fees, semester materials fees) and the monthly tuition.
Amerimont Montessori was nice, but their brochure had a grammatical error in it and that just sent a vibe that didn't sit well with me. If the company doesn't take the time to proof read their materials before distributing it, I'm not sure how meticulous the care could be. I know that this may sound a little pretentious, but grammar and spelling errors are a big deal for me!
Hephatha only had afternoon availability by the time I got around to checking them out. Shame on me for procrastinating. I didn't go further into looking at their fees or academic program because of it.
I liked Vineyard Christian because they were reasonably priced. I toured the school and the teachers appeared competent and genuinely cared for the students. I liked that they really try to instill values and teach empathy. I think my almost 4 year old can benefit from it.
Thanks again! I love this site! It provided a great starting point for me!

I am sending my daughter to Vineyard. I've heard good things about Vineyard. I tried enrolling her in Hepatha which I also heard things from but they were full w/in first 2 weeks of open enrollment. So, you need to show up day 1 of open enrollment to get him in there. I visited most schools in the area and didn't get a good vibe from the director of the Montessori one on S.A.Canyon Rd. Also, heard some not so good things about Page Private.

Good luck!

Hi J.,
I have my kids at Our Saviours Childrens Center in Orange. My 4 year old seriously knows more than me. She knows the ALL about planets and much, much more. They are structured like a school, so all the kids in a class are the same age and same learning level. My older daughter has been there since she was 11 months and ALL the teachers are great. It is worth your time to check them out. Their number is ###-###-####.

Hi J.! My daughter just started at the Brea Olinda Friends Christian School. I was really impressed by how genuine and caring the staff was when we toured the school. Her teachers have been great with her. She's had a rough transition as she has stayed at home with me up until now. They have all been so patient and I was really impressed that other teachers that weren't even her personal one remembered her name and smiled and greeted (and continue to greet) us everyday.
Hope this helps-good luck!!

Well, it won't let me delete my response so I apologize, I didn't see originally that you were looking in the Anaheim Hills area. Sorry!

My cousin went to Hepatha Lutheran Church (off of Santa Ana Canyon road) for the past 2 years. My aunt is extremely picky and checked out every school around. It wasn't overly religious-they did go to chapel once a week. My cousin came out out knowing how to read simple sentences and completely prepped for kindergarten. My neice attended the Tutor Time and my sister was happy with them.

You'll here both sides of the coin about Montessori schools. You'll just have to check them out and go with your gut. I myself am not a big fan.

Check out the licensing reports wherever you choose.

I have heard good things about hepatha. and is it Fairmont? The one by the car wash off serrano....

Personally, I think kids learn a lot from structured play. We use the preschools in the PYLUSD. And they have a good balance, and teachers that aren't 18. Does Orange Unified have preschools?

Hi J. -

We live in Serrano, just near Anaheim Hills, and we bring our 4 year old to Salem Lutheran off Santiago Canyon and Cannon road. They have a wonderful program, and currently have slots open (they are very hard to get into). They offer morning and afternoon childcare and in the summer a great summer camp which we also use. This will be our second year.

You can email me direct if you need any more informaiton. The website is www.salemorange.com.

Hi J.!
I live in Anahiem Hills and had the same concerns with my children (I have 3). I researched most of the preschools in the area and the one I choose was Vineyards on LaPalma. They started the Kindergarten curriculum in preschool and the kids also had fun. They were not the cheapest but they also were not the most expensive. The one school I was most disappointed in was Hepatha on Solomon. All they were was a glorified play time. I was getting the same thing with the city for less money. Good luck with your hunting.
