Scar Treatment

Hi, I was wondering if anyone could recommend a cream or treatment to help minimize the appearance of a scar. My son was bitten by a dog a week ago (it was a complete accident). It seems as if the dog's tooth hooked onto his forehead and tore the skin. He ended up getting 4 stitches under the skin and 14 on the skin, but luckily there was no muscle damage. Now the stitches are out and the wound is healing pretty nicely. The doctor told us to have the area covered at least 6 months when he is outside so the scar tissue doesn't darken because of the sunlight and to use a scar cream. So when he go out, I use sunblock and cover it. I have Mederma scar cream, but I don't know if there is a better one out there or if there is anything else I can do to help the scar go away. My son is 2 and a half and I know that since he's young the skin will regenerate and the scar will fade a lot over the years, but I just want to do everything I can to help. Any advice is welcome and greatly appreciated!

I swear by Mederma. They sell it at CVS and Target. My daughter sliced her forehead open on a table last summer and I followed the instructions completely. You have to use it a few times a day for a few months but it is so light now and flat, that I can barely see it unless I look. I really recommend it. It is about 10$ a tube but worth it. You really have to be diligent about it though.

Keeping it covered and the Mederma is a good plan. My son split his upper ear almost all the way through about 2 years ago. Now you can barely see the scar. We used mederma. I've used Vitamin E oil on my own scars from surgeries and they have faded nicely. Good luck.

My father used to rub straight vitamin E oil on his scars. The scar must be healed over for sure, but it did help fade and heal the surrounding scars. If you cannot find a bottle of oil- just stick a pin in one of the regular oil capsules and squeeze it out. It does work.

That is a very scary thing to go through!! I would recommend keeping up with the Mederma. My youngest daughter fell on a gravel driveway and slid on her left cheek. This left her with a scrape that went all the way from her eyebrow to her chin. She was only a little over a year old when that happened, and we were religious with putting sunscreen and the Mederma on it. After about 3 months, you could not tell that she had had an injury there. Now, she is 4, and unless you know she has a scar there you can't see it. Good luck and again, sorry to hear about your little guys incident!

Hi C.,
I am so sorry that your little one got bitten by a dog :( that is very scary. I have found this AMAZING cream that I have been using on a VERY ugly scar I have from a surgery on my arm and it has significally made the scar look better. Even some of my colleagues have been amazed. It is called See No Scar by Mama Mio. No it is not cheap I have to warn you but it is worth every penny. You will mostly find it sold at Spa's but you can probably Google it and find ti somewhere sold locally. Oh, and it is safe for kids as it even says on there that you can use it for your kids boo boos (sp?)... good luck!

Vitamin E Caplets. buy the clear caplets...pierce a tiny hole in the caplet and apply a little each day.
My hubbie was in a very bad car accident as a teen and had a scar running from his eyebrow to cheek. it really worked well! his doctor even told him to do it. but vit e takes a while to dry out. so use a small amount!

sorry to hear about your son having to go through that! poor little guy! keep up with the mederma, and keep loads of sunscreen on it every day. my baby brother was caught in the face with a gold club when he was younger, it tore right through his cheek, we're talking HUNDREDS of stitches... we kept up with the mederma in the evening and at night, and the highest spf sunscreen multiple times during the day (and of course try to keep it covered)... you can barely tell he has a scar (it hides in his dimple)... also, with this being on your sons forehead, theres a huge chance that as he gets older and his body grows, the scar may end up hiding behind his hairline. good luck and again, im sorry to hear that that happened, SO SCARY!!

My daughter was also bitten by a dog on the face. We used a lot of sunscreen and and also Vitamin E twice a day. You can get it in liquid form at the grocery store, or get capsules and break them open. Her scars are not gone but they look a lot better. (She had over 100 stitches). Good luck to you!

Hi

I used Bio Oil on my scar , you can use it as soon as the wound is no longer open and you can only use it for 3 months , the newer the scar the more effective it is. You can buy it in CVS , Rite Aid etc and it is around $12 , you would need to double check on the box though if it can be used on kids , if it can be then I reccommend it.
