Quinoa

Where do you buy your quinoa? I've checked 3 local grocers (Kroger, Meijers, Walmart), and no one has heard of it. Is this something that is only carried in health food stores?

Thanks.

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone. I'm going to try Trader Joe's this week and I'll check again at Kroger. I wasn't quite sure exactly where I would find it. I thought it was a cross between rice and barley.

I would expect Meijer to have it, look near the rice or on the international food isle. I usually get mine at Trader Joe's in Northville. Its a good price. You can also get it at Zerbo's healthfood store in bulk.

I bought a huge bag at Costco ! (Now if I only knew some recipes. LOL) It's a pretty common staple. Do you have an Albertson's there? Ask a grocer to special order it for you as an option or you could buy it off Amazon too.

We love quinoa!
Albertson's carries it here. Sometimes they have it on the aisle with the rice and pasta, sometimes on their "Wild Foods" aisle. It varies from store to store.
And you can buy it in bulk at Whole Foods.

Our local Trader Joe and Whole Foods carry it, but we personally buy it in bulk online because we use it a lot and can get it cheaper that way.

I buy it all the time at Meijer, it is in the ethnic section, next to the couscous and other "non-american food". It works out great because the Meijer I go to, it is right across the isle from my gluten-free section and a lot of the non-american food doesn't have wheat in it. They used to carry really good rice cracker/cookies from Israel with chocolate on them- yum! I've also bought a really big bag of it at Kroger, it was on the bottom shelf next to rice and beans in a generic looking bag. At Meijer it is in a plastic container and they carry 3 varieties, one plain, one with raisins and almonds and another with mushrooms and other things in it.

I buy quinoa in bulk at Whole Foods; they also have it at Trader Joe's, but the bulk price is usually cheaper.

Have you looked either in the rice aisle or the 'natural food'/organic aisle?

Hmmm... our Wal-Mart has it, but I don't know if many of the employees would know because it isn't a common product here. In our store it is by the rice and couscous.
Good luck!

I get mine at the Kroger in Southfield, Evergreen and 12 mile. This is near my work. I can't find it in the one in Canton, which is near my home. I guess it is hit or miss, but health food stores should have it.

I got a 4 lb bag of it at Costco for either $7.99 or $8.99. I hear it can be pretty pricey at some grocery stores.

I get mine at Cub . . . I bet your grocers or at least Kroger do carry it, I asked at Cub and 2 different people told me they didn't carry it (they were even sure what it was). I had already bought the regular quinoa, but I was looking for the pasta. I ended up finding it in the organic section, near the gluten free foods. Sometimes you can talk to the manager, and they'll order it for you.

Kroger does carry it, I've purchased it there. It's always in their "natural" food section next to the organic rice. However, any all natural market will always carry like Whole Foods. It can get a little pricey when you buy it by the box but Whole Foods has it in their bulk bins and you save a ton buying it that way. I love quinoa, I rarely by rice:)

Last time I bought mine at Wal-Mart they had organic pre washed. It was by the Rice. I also get it at Trader Joe's and I am sure that Whole Foods has it too. I go to the Wal-Mart(s) on Michigan Ave. and the one on Belleville Road they both have it. Look in the specialty isle at Meijer and Kroger. We love Quinoa I am going to make some Sqaw Bread with it, sounds really yummy.

Quinoa is sold at Kroger - in the organic section. If you still can't find it, ask a manager and if the manager isn't sure, tell him/her you heard it is in the organic section. I buy my quinoa at Costco. They sell a big bag of it!

And yes, all health food stores sell quinoa, but so does Kroger, so don't give up on that just because one employee told you wrong!

our local grocery store has it bottom shelf in a torquoise box on the grain/rice/barley aisle.

I think whole-foods sells it too.

What planet to these people live on that they've never even heard of Quinoa? It's talked about in every magazine I read!

I am surprised you can't get it at your Kroger. Our local food chain has it in both the health food area and around where the rice is. Also Costco has it in a huge bag that lasts forever.

Check the "world foods" section or "organic" section of your regular grocery store. I buy mine at Shaw's. I'm not surprised that the store clerks have never heard of it, but that doesn't necessarily mean that they don't carry it. We have a section of the store with soy and nut milks, organic cereals, condiments and snacks, natural nut butters, etc. The Quinoa is tucked away in that section, usually near the oatmeal, rice and pasta. Sometimes it's available plain, in a bag, sometimes in a box with a flavor packet included. If you still can't find it then yes, I'd check out the health food store.
