I am stumped. My niece live with us and just found out that she could be pregnant. She has taken 4 test two at school and 2 at home. The two at school came back positvie and the ones at home came back negitive. How can that be? I do have an apointment next week for her but just wondering if this has happened to anyone else and what the outcome was? I have always thought that the odds were that you could get a false negitive but not a false positive. Is that true? I am freaking out she is only 17 and after asking a ton of questions she could be up to 3 months pregnant. I never saw this coming, she is a really good kid that made a bad choice.

She is having no pain or bleeding. She has been getting sick off and on and that is what promped me to ask. All the test were taken in the same two week peroid.

So What Happened?

The two she took that came back positive the school nurse did them so its the nurse that told her the results. The first test I had her take she did it in target bathroom. She pee'ed on it looked and tossed it in the trash. So really who knows if that was a negitive after all. I them got her a digital and that one said not pregnant. It has been a few days since that test. It has been two weeks since the positive result.

the digital ones are less sensitive than ones like First Response. the doctor will do a blood test instead and then you should know for certain.

Google chemical pregnancy.

Very well could be one. Very logical reason behind two positives and then negatives. Sometimes all the "stuff" the body can reabsorb so you'd never know about it resolving itself.

Otherwise there is this great site called peeonastick.com

Pregnancy tests detect the hormone HCG. All tests have different levels of sensitivities to the chemical. A FRER (First Response Early Results Pregnancy Test) test is the best. They have been tested at less than 8 sometimes. A blood test is 5. Anything above 5 is considered pregnant. But quite possibly the nurse had a more sensitive test than the one you bought. The electronic ones require 50. Anyways, us TTC girls know way too much about POS. he he

Go buy a FRER. Test her first thing in the morning. If she's pregnant it'll come up. If it doesn't she's more than likely not but it could still be etopical.

Regardless I wish you guys the best. Good luck.

For me, the first few weeks, ONLY first morning, pee like a racehorse full bladder urine turned the test positive. Anything after that, for the rest of the day, was diluted too much to pop positive. I was also an early tester. I tested the full six days before my period was supposed to begin.

So, I would show positive first thing in the am and negative until I went to bed until there was enough HCG built up in my system. Maybe that is an issue for her?

The other very common thing is that maybe the nurse made the mistake!!!

I agree with the other moms. I would buy a digital test (clear blue easy is my favorite) and take it in the morning at home. I've heard of false negatives (the body hasn't made enough hcg to register, too early etc) but I've not heard of a false positive.

She is likely very early pregnant. The pregnancy test at school is probably more sensitive to HCG in the urine. Some can test a level of 25 or higher and other's (at home) test are 50 or higher. I've had a couple pregnancies where I had a few negatives and positives. The end result was always pregnant. If you wait a couple of days and take one at home it will probably be a positive.

Good Luck!

Its possible that she was pregnant 2weeks ago, but has miscarried. If she hasn't had any spotting, I would take her to the dr. sooner rather than later to get checked out. They can do a blood test that will confirm that she is or was. If she was and miscarried then she might need a D&C.

Good luck.

I was really quite confused with my first pregnancy too. First you need to make sure you read it correctly. Even the faintest second line can mean positive. My suggestion would be to go out and buy one of the digital pregnancy tests and take 2 again. If they come back negative then maybe she read the first ones wrong. If they come back positive then she is pregnant. Having one test give you the wrong results can be explained but two means that something was read incorrectly. Of course, the only way to know for sure is to go to the doctor and get her pregnancy confirmed there.

I've heard of false negatives but not positives as well, unless it is right after a miscarriage or pregnancy loss or child birth. Since you have to wait a week, in the meantime you can at least encourage her to start taking prenatal vitamins and "act" pregnant. That is frustrating to get mixed results and then have to wait... :(

You should use the first urine of the morning for the test, to get more reliable results, and by all means go to the doctor. The exam, blood and urine tests there will be more sensitive, and let you know what is going on.

Did you have her pee on it first thing in the morning? Your first morning urine has the highest levels and if she is pregnant it should show up. Also, she needs to make sure she is doing it right. If she's not she may not be getting a true result. Regardless I would have her see and ob/gyn to find out for sure.

Like the other ladies said, try and use a digital pregnancy test. Also, do it with the first urine of the morening, the pregnancy hormone is higher in the concentrated urine. Hope all turns out well, how ever it may turn out.

How confusing! I hope you have a solid answer soon. And hopefully she'll learn from this experience 17 is toooooo young to have a baby! Maybe the MD can give her some better birth control options. She's lucky to have your guide her. Good luck.

I remember hearing once that by the end of the first trimester, the grown hormone responsible for the tests is diminishing. That's why the nausea is going away. I believe it's possible that a test will be negative for most woman at this point. It would especially be so in the middle of the day as someone else pointed out.

It sounds like you need to get her in for an ultrasound and see the bundle of joy.
