Need Thoughtful Christmas/Thank You Gift Idea

My husband spends a large amount of time out of town for work, and there is a chance he will be gone for Christmas. Another guy he works with mentioned that he would cover for him so that he could be home for Christmas if he isn't also working. (The friend is older and his kids are grown, and we have a one-year old and Christmas is a big deal to me.) So if he does indeed end up working so my husband won't have to, I want to send a gift to him and his wife. I know you can send mail order gourmet pies and things like that, or I could send homemade baked goods (but cooking isn't my strong suit- they would be good but not wonderful). I've never met them, they live in another state, and my hubby hasn't met the wife, so we don't really know their interests. Any ideas and suggestions would be so helpful- I want to do something really nice because this means a lot to me- it's probably the best gift anyone could give me.
Thanks, R.

A few years ago I made a lovely wreath for a few friends. I happened to make mine out of fake materials (I got a base wreath from a craft store and added seasonal holiday flower stems), but you could make one that was real pine branches as well so the smell would be lovely. If it were a fake one, they could use it again and again each holiday, but if it were real then they wouldn't have to store it again either. People can always find a good use for a wreath for a season...great door hangers or table decorations! And they'll think of you and know you're thankful every time they see it.

It's wonderful to hear there are good people out there looking out for other people! I'm a big fan of Schwans frozen foods. They deliver to any address in the U.S. and their desserts are fantastic! Try them out online at schwans.com. There's also the Honey Baked stores located throughout the country. You can order a gift certificate if you're not sure what they'd like--with either website. Happy shopping!

I love sending these to friends and family, in fact most of my Christmas gifts are these this year. It's called Ribbon Gifts, and there are all price ranges and collections to choose from. They also ship very well, and you can even send them directly to the recievers house. Check out the site, I highly reccomend them.

There is a company called Harry and David that sells the most wonderful gifts. There big product is pears although you dont have to buy that. They have great baskets that have fruit mixed in with candy and cakes. They even have mini christmas trees with different suprises. I dont know how much you were thinking of spending but they are a great company to buy gifts from because you can cover a lot of bases with 1 of their baskets. Im sure the person is not looking to recieve anything so whatever you decide to send him and his wife they will be greatful. Thank God there is still great people in this world. Have a Merry Christmas this year.

I sure hope it works out that your husband is able to be home for Christmas! Other suggestions would be to google a restaurant directory in their home town, or call the local chamber of commerce for suggestions, and find out the names of some of the nicer restaurants and send a gift certificate from the restaurant that would cover a lovely meal and then he and his wife could enjoy a night out to dinner on your family when he is home. Or, you could send steaks from Omaha steaks. Good luck and I hope it works out for you and your family!

How about a gift card to a restaurant. You would need to find out what restaurants they enjoy. My husbands boss gave us a Copper Card, I think thats what it was called, anyway it could be used at several restaurants, The Copper Kettle and Calhouns were on there. We are from MO and just recently moved to TN. When I was talking to my Dad he knew that Calhouns had the best ribs but I did not know any of the restaurants. We ate at the Copper Kettle because his boss recommended it. It was very good and we were able to get an appetizer and two meals that we could not finish so we took them home and had lunch the next day. The card was a $50 card and our bill was 49.95. We only put cash out for the tip. The service and food were really good.

The fruit bouquets are really neat. I can't think of the name of the place that does them (I probably will right after I hit "send"). My mom got one for Mother's Day. It seemed like the fruit lasted for days.

I usually try to find out a resturant in their town that they enjoy. Even if is local you can call and have a gift certificate mailed to them or you so you can send a nice card with it. I just did this for my brother and his wife and they really enjoyed it.

I would put together a basket of several kinds of goodies so you cover all bases. You could put together a themed sort of basket. ex: a cooking basket with a cookbook, cooking mixes, a gift card, etc or a night in basket with popcorn, blockbuster gift card, candy, etc. You could get things like Cracker Barrel jars of jellies and muffin mixes and then a Cracker Barrel gift card. You could put together a basket of tea/coffee cups, choc covered spoons, different types of teas, and then a Starbucks gift card. Or, you can look online for restaurants in their city and buy a gift card to a nice restaurant. Sometimes less is more too, a really nice card telling them exactly what this means to you and just a small something to go with it. I have a friend who makes specialty chocolates that are really cute. www.chocolatesunflower.com She can ship it to them. She has chocolate business cards that say "thank you" or "you made my day", etc You can add that to a gift card. Even a nice bottle of wine and some nice stemless glasses with a nice wine cork, if you know they drink. A cheese set can be ordered online. You can order cheeses and a nice cutting board and a cheese knife. Pampered chef has these things except for the cheese. You can go to Cheesecakefactory.com and order them a nice cheesecake. Or, Cabella's has some nice food things to order and have shipped.

Hope this works out for you. Worst case, can you and your child go with your husband? Spending Christmas in a hotel would not be great for you but your son would not care either way and he would be with his daddy. :o)

Hickory Farms has great gift packages you could send them. I always loved getting those. You can find their website here http://tinyurl.com/5cewp3

Another one is Edible Arrangements http://www.ediblearrangements.com/ Really awesome fruit arrangements that look like flower baskets but are made out of fruit.

Long term things could be a subscription to National Geographic (my grandmother sends us that every year & we love it)

Or you could do gift cards to restaurants in their area and include 2 movie tickets so they could make it a date night.

I hope everything works out for y'all. The co-worker sounds like a generous, understanding man.

Merry Christmas.

First of all, congratulations on your baby! One year old! He (she) is entering one of the most exciting times of YOUR life! How incredibly kind, wonderful, and generous of your husband's co-worker to volunteer to cover for him for Christmas. I know you want your expression to adequately express your thanks and gratitude for his generosity.

Go online and research some of the better restaurants in his area. Order a gift certificate to that establishment. (Be sure to find out what an average dinner for two would cost there and then bump it up another twenty bucks or so to allow he and his wife to choose whatever they desire from the menu without having to cover any difference on the bill.) Then, if you know they are wine drinkers, select a good bottle of wine (it doesn't have to be expensive to be good), and tie the gift certificate to the neck of the bottle with a little Christmas ribbon. You might even consider a bottle of champagne if you are certain the gift will arrive before New Years.

I'd send one or more gift certificates to chain restaurants in their area. You could find out which ones are there by looking the town up online. That way they can enjoy themselves and not have issues with likes/dislikes or storage.

I believe I have the perfect solution for you!! I am so excited! My husband and I have a gift and incentive company and we help folk who share your same need.

Check out this site:
www.vnyemba.ordermygift.com

This will introduce you to our Ribbon program. Ribbon enables you to purchase a gift album that ranges in price anywhere from $25 - $750. The recipient receives the album and can choose the gift that they would like.

It eliminates the guesswork. And the couple you want to appreciate can choose a gift together and it'll be shipped right to them. That also eliminates the distance issue that is related to getting them a gift.

I think it is great that this gentleman is willing to work for your hubby! And it is even greater that you want to appreciate him in a thoughtful way.

If you have any additional questions about the site or ribbon just email me personally at ____@____.com me know your thoughts!

Blessings to you and your family!

When I was in the hospital with the birth of my first son, my husband's co-workers sent us an "Edible Arrangement". It was a beautiful and delicious arrangement of fruit. My parents brought a fruit and chocolate dipped one to my sister and her husband and they loved it. They are a little bit expensive but you can check our their website. www.ediblearrangements.com

It's so hard to send a gift to someone you don't really know so good luck finding a gift for them. I'm sure you will get tons of great suggestions.

Find out what restaurants they like and get them a gift card at a couple of their favorite restaurants. That way they can have a nice dinner together, and think about that this is what they gave you guys at Christmas--togetherness. If they are wine drinkers then maybe a nice wine basket from a Vineyard, with their favorite wines.

Wow! If you can afford it, the plane ticket idea is the best! What a great gift he is giving and you could give for this so special holiday.
You may find a copy to include of the story where the wife and husband are desperately trying to find Christmas gifts for each other but can't afford it. The women donates her long beautiful hair to buy the husband... I think a wallet. Then the husband uses all his money to buy her a beautiful broach for her long hair. It is such a sweet story that I am not at all doing justice. The moral is something about the amount of love each had for the other, that they gave up their most prized piece for the other.

Good luck!

My favorite thing to send people are "cookie boquets". Go to www.cookiesbydesign.com and look at how adorable they are!! You can send a "thank you" theme or a christmas theme. They range in size and price. I would also follow up whatever gift with a nice card with a picture of your hubby and little one by the christmas tree on christmas day. Show them EXACTLY how important it was and let them know that because of them, you now have wonderful first christmas memories with your precious baby! =0)
