Natural Insect Repellant

Not sure how old your kiddos are but we give our vit. B1. I get it at the health food store in a capsule because it doesn't smell too good. This is what people that ride horses take and some people even give it to their horses to help with bugs. We camp a lot and my faimly is the only one that doesn't use that bug spray stuff. We have given 100 mg to my son since he was 2 yrs old. We would just open the capsule and mix it with apple sauce or pudding. My daughter has taken 100 mg up till this year and she will take the 250 mg. (she is 11) My husband and I take 250 mg a day. Good luck!

My husband is retired from the Navy. He trained Navy Seals. To my surprise he says they used Skin So Soft by Avon.

You can also try Green Alcohol. (Alcohol with Spearmint)the cost is less than $1.00 at your local drug store. Rub it all over her body (careful with the eyes). Insects hate it.

I know this sounds just horrifying, but when my husband was stationed in Egypt and then Iraq there was a terrible problem with bugs. He and his guys would swallow the head of a paper match. I don't know how old your daughter is, so I don't know if she's old enough to swallow something, but the head of a match is just sulfur and therefore is safe for human consumption. It will keep any and all bugs away from your daughter, guaranteed. I hope this was somewhat helpful.

Anyhow they have this oil -- derived from a specific type of tea tree oil-- called Melaleuca. I rubbed it all over my daughter last summer (she was 9 mo at the time) when we were at an all day family BBQ and she was the only one not to get any bites! I put it on my mosquitoe bites before and it took the itchiness away!

I am using an insect repellant on my 2 year old who has VERY sensitive skin. It is made of both natural and organic ingredients BUT it does not contain ANY harsh ingredients or preservatives. Have you tried Vanilla? I pour a bottle of cooking vanilla into a 99 cent spray bottle and coat my children with that. It dosent keep all bugs off but it does help against mosquitoes. You have to reapply frequently and it can stain clothing but i like it and my kids smell like cookies.

Get a clean spray bottle and fill it about 1/3 full of Listerine mouthwash, and then fill the rest of it with plain water.

Spray it all over her. If it ends up making her feel sticky, dilute it with more water.

You can also use a spray bottle filled with only Listerine and spray all around the area where she will be outside. This works better than any of the actual mosquito repellent products I have tried.

Also, mosquitoes are attracted to certain scents, so make sure she isn't wearing any perfumes outside.

Have you tried SSS from AVON? I sell AVON if you want to try some. I can give you a sample to see if it works.

Does your daughter wear white clothing more than everyone else? White socks, shirts, shorts etc attract mosquitos and other insects. OUCH!

I'm sorry I don't know of any organic insect repellents but this might be something you'd like to try. Avon has a new Skin So Soft product that is DEET free called SSS Bug Guard Plus Expedition which also has SPF 30, very water resistant. It's unscented and has vitamin E.

Try Avon's Skin So Soft oil. It has no Deet, but seems to keep the bugs at bay.

This is not a natural or organic option, but since I'm usually the "bug magnet", this is what has worked for me. Avon's Skin So Soft bug guard lotion works wonders for me, whether it's mosquitoes or those nasty "no see 'ums" gnats. Considering the risk of West Nile virus and other diseases that are bug-transmitted, I'd take my chances with Skin So Soft if you can't find a natural option that works.

Avon's Original Scent Skin So Soft is a good repellant. Just rub it on her in the morning. It last a good while and is gentle on the skin. Make sure you get the oil. I'm not sure that the lotion or bubble bath has the same effect.

I will be checking your responds. I have a grandson just like your daughter. Now, I remember. One of my aunts e-mailed me about Listerine. Put Listerine in a spray bottle and spray around outside.

You are going to laugh because I thought my mother was crazy, but when my girls were babies, we tied fabric softener dryer sheets to our belt loops and to the baby buggy. They really do keep the mosquitoes away.

Try it and see if it works for you too.

Also, I've heard that Avon Skin So Soft repels bugs, but that never worked for me. It might for you.

You can also try feeding her more foods with garlic and onion. Bugs tend to not like the odor our bodies emit after eating these foods.

Bounce sheets in her pockets (my sister calls this Power Ranger Protection). Also, I've heard (not tried yet), that you can take a 1/2 listermint & 1/2 water mixture and spray it on the skin, but also in the area where she will be playing.

Real quick, listerine!! Yes, I got an email saying to put it in a spray bottle and spray the yard, chairs and even clothing to keep mosquitoes away. IT WORKS!! We had a cookout and the first bite I got I went and got it. NO ONE complained about bug bites including me, nor did I see them. I even sprayed it around in the yard and on the metal opening of the door (the email recomended not spraying wood)

Burt's Bee and Earth's Best by Jason both have all natural insect repellent. I get them at diapers.com, they deliver everything I need straight to my house for the same price I would pay in the store or cheaper (of course many of the natural items I can't even find in stores).

Have you tried Skin So Soft by Avon? It seems to have a record of success as a bug repellant. Also, try bruising the leaves of the mosquito plant, heat up some unscented mineral oil and steep the leaves in it. Cool and apply. Good luck.

i have heard of listerine mouth wash just put in a spray bottle and spray it around whever your are!! i heard it also works really good on fly's!!!

Try Skin-So-Soft oil from Avon mixed with Real Vanilla (not extract.) It works! It's not organic, but it also doesn't contain any DEET or anything harmful. It's just an oil that you rub on and works wonders! Hope this helps!

Arbonne has a natural aromatheraphy mist spray (it's really a body fragrance/refresher) called Awaken which has repellent qualities and does not smell bad. Look it up on Arbonne.com

I have never tried it, but some people say it really works. If you put a dryer sheet, like Bounce, in your pocket it's supposed to repel bugs. Not exactly natural, but at least it's not a cream with chemicals absorbing into skin.

i use white vinegar diluted half and half with water in a spray bottle. it doesn't smell great at first and you have to apply it regularly, but it doesn't have deet in it! also, on hot summer days it feels cool and the kids love to get sprayed, plus it's super cheap!! my husband puts dryer sheets in his back pockets when he is mowing and never gets bit. i hope this helps!

There is a natural product that you can spray on mattresses/ pillows to get rid of dust mites. It also gets rid of roaches with NO harmful chemicals. Let me know if you like more information.

Not sure if it is true or not, but a pharmacist once told me that if you load up on vitamin B12 prior to mosquito season that it would be a detraction to mosquitos. Apparently they can detect the scent of it and don't like it. Worth researching anyway. Also, Avon makes a lotion that is a good mosquito repellent that doesn't have a lot of harsh chemicals in it. Should be able to find it on their website. It has been recommended for kids for years, and our soldiers use tons of it in the desert. Best of luck.

If you will google deet free insect repellent you will get all kinds of them. I also read in one of my magazines that this year there is a new deet free and it supposed to work better than deet.

I heard one time that you could carry a bounce dryer sheet. When my little girl was a baby I would put them on her stroller. She never got bitten. Give it a try, if it doesnt work at least she will smell good.

This is a recet home remedy I heard about and it seems to work. Put Listerine in a spray bottle and spray around your area. Spraying it directly on mosquitoes kills them almost instantly. Sprayed the area around the food table, the children's swing area, and any standing water nearby. Don't spray directly on a wood door (like your front door), but spray around the frame. Spray around the window frames, and even inside a dog house to keep biting bugs at bay.

I have read the responses about vitamin B. The best way I have increased my kids' B intake is an B 12 supplement drink from Nutrilite. I get it at

It also has the added benefits of helping to control ADD and ADHD symptoms naturally in kids. (my son) It says it is an energy drink, but, I have found that it is more of a health supplement and a mood stabalizer for those struggling with depression.
another option, try adding a large amount of garlic to her diet. It works for my son who has had the same issue with bug bites. It is also very good for your heart health. You can also check out any good health food store, they usually carry an oraginic insect repellant.

Hi, I just recently read that Listerine mouthwash is a great repellant for mosquitoes. Put it in a spray bottle and spray around the area you are in. I don't know how it would work for other pests. Also Avon Skin-So-Soft lotion is a mosquito repellant. Taking garlic oil capsules is supposed to be a natural deterrent to pests, but it can also be a deterrent to people as well, since it is expelled through the sweat glands. I'm glad you're looking for natural solutions. I really think all the pesticide use is responsible for much of the cancer we have. Hope these suggestions help a little. God bless. C. S.

Hi there..my suggestion would be Avon Skin So Soft..I grew up with my Mom using this on us and it worked just as well as any product you can buy in a store.

Neem is excellent. You can find it at a local health food store.

Food for thought (pun intended):
Sweets (even juice) make you taste sweeter, therefore, bugs will eat you up!

We drink a lot of water and do our best to avoid sweets. We stay healthier and are no longer so tasty to mosquitos.

Also, when we go to tropical, foreign countries where the bugs are atrocious... we eat lots of garlic before we go and while we're there and we rarely get bitten.

Pure Vanilla extract when dabbed on pulse points repels mosquitoes ;)

I also recommend Body Dew by Slumber Parties....it has carnation oil in it and that is a natural insect repellent. It does not stay oily like SSS.

If you really, really want to repel them from your yard as a whole I'd plant some carnation plants in your yard. ;)

I'm from Louisiana (the skeeter mecca) and have tried everything! lol If you use the dryer sheets make sure it's the Bounce Original scent...others I find aren't that effective.

I am allergic to bug spray and I have found that Body Dew which is sold by Slumber Parties works great. It is like baby oil without the greasesness. You can spray it on when you get out of the tub and rub it in. It is safe for the face and everything and works wonders. It comes in different sents like Spring Rain, Vanilla and Strawberry Champain. If you are in North Alabama I can tell you where to get it if not you can go online to slumberparties.com. It is a romance enhancement store so I would not go to the site at work.

Have you tried skin so soft by Avon?

I agree with a few other responds "skin so soft" works naturally you can even spray it on your screens to keep flies,mosquitos,nats out of your house too! I've also used dryer sheets all you do before she goes outside to play gently rub a fabric sheet on her body & clothes.

I hgve used Skin So Soft by Avon -- I think the bugs slide off when they come in for a landing but it seemed to work.

Perhaps though, you need to just watch where your daughter is playing -- bugs like the shade, for example, and they like the dark! I, too, get bitten when my husband doesn't get one darn bite -- I'm just sweeter, I guess!

Try using Bounce dryer sheets, they are a little rough, but rub them on exposed skin and it is supposed to help repel mosquitos. I've tried it on myself and my kids (for some reason mosquitos like us--a lot!) and it works!

Another thing you can use is Avon's "Skin So Soft". The only drawback to that is that it is quite oily, but it smells good and repels bugs.

You could probably Google other remedies to repel bugs, but these are the best I know of that don't contain the DEET chemical. Good luck!

White vinegar is good. I refuse to put DEET on my skin.

I've tried the Skin-so-Soft idea, and I swear the mosquitoes thought it was marinade - i got bitten worse than with nothing.

Off also makes a botanical repellent that I have found really effective, and it has no DEET in it. I think the active ingredient in it is eucalyptus oil.

I would use Avon Bug Guild it has no Heat in it the worse stuff in the other products. You could also use the Avon Skin So Soft.

Kudos for keeping poisons off of your child! It is amazing what they will put on the store shelves, so people think stuff like Off! is safe.

I recently saw a (solar-powered! I love it!) electronic bug repellant at gaiam.com. It was only $10. You can put it on a belt loop, purse or backpack strap, etc.

They have other stuff, too, like herbal wrist bands, sprays, etc. They also have "big guns" stuff to clear an entire acre for months at a time, if you really just want bugs OUT. For a lesser problem, I've found the electronic repellers to work the best, even when I lived in mosquito-infested Asheville, NC.

Several years ago my Mother-in-Law was going to visit Alaska and had heard about the Misquito population. She too was a bug magnet. She heard that taking Vinigar pills from a Natural Food store would help. She started taking them before she went to Alaska and her experiences with the bugs were quit funny. She could be with a group of people who were swatting bugs, spraying bug repellantconstantly, and running for cover. She on the other hand would have bugs land on her but not bite. She would calmly wipe them off and then use a wipe to get the bug goo off. She didn't have a single bite all summer.

I have also heard that vinegar is very good for health. I would definantly research the idea before doing it though, especially with a child.
