How much do people pay nannies in this neighborhood and how do you find one? We are trying to compare the cost of different day care options and have NO IDEA how much a nanny or even daycare might cost for two one year olds...yes, twins!
I have found that the range for 2-3 children is 12 - 15 per hour. Experience, hours worked, and other responsibilities effect the exact amount. We have 2 (Italian "twins") and pay $12.00/hour in the suburbs. Good luck with your search.
S., I'm not sure what part of the city you live in, but the going rate for a good nanny is anywhere from $10-$12/hr. Shocking, isn't it. I pay my nanny $400/wk regardless if I need her every day. I got my nanny through a woman named Elizabeth at Magnifique. Whatever you do, do not use Teri Burgess Consulting. She has a pretty impressive ad in Chicago Parent. I paid her $1500 to find me a nanny and I never got one and can't get ahold of Teri. I'm not the only one. There is an article about her in the January 4, 06 issue of the Chicago Tribune. Around 650-700 is the going rate. I know someone that is really good if you would like her contact number. What area do you live in?
Have you considered an au pair? At a cost of less than $350 per week, you can have a live-in that can provide up to 45 hours per week of childcare. It doesn't matter how many children you have. This is a government approved program and the au pairs go through extensive screening before they arrive in your home. You may be better of with a nanny for 2 children in the city, from what I've heard from friends. Most people I know pay $12-ish/hour for one child, but the increase for 2 children is only a couple of dollars/hour vs. paying the full cost of 2 children in daycare. We have found our part-time nannies through word of mouth. Asking friends and neighbors. My friend had a positive experience finding someone through Craig's List.

We looked into nannies for our 3 small kids (4,2,9 mos) and cost is a big differential. American nannies cost much more than international. The names of the international nanny websites elude me right now, but they are much more affordable. To have someone come and go each day, you're looking at about $350+/week. They'll have to have a car/transportation etc. If you have the space in home for a nanny, then the cost drops to about $190/wk. Au pairs have some kind of an educational 'clause', where they must take a certain number of college credits while they're here, but that allows them more tax breaks, etc. International nannies can introduce 2nd and 3rd languages, culture diversity. But....we ended up drafting a college girl (most colleges have student centers that you can post job requests...look for schools that have child-aimed degree programs). She's working out great. We pay $50/day for an 8 hr day, and if it's less that that, we do $8/hr. Hope this helps
There are nanny referral services, often you can find them online,also look under au pairs. It is expensive though! I looked into it, I have a 3 yr old and year old and live on a Teacher's salary, so I ended up finding a stay at home mom to watch my kids, same great care, half the price. I would start by looking up services online.

I live in the So. Suburbs and the price range that I found for infants are from 200 -250 a week for full time, and they will usually knock of a percentage for two children. Day care facilities were the most expensive and home care being alittle less. I know a few people who have used craiglist.org/chicago to (childcare section)find and advertise for childcare providers. There are always plenty of nannies on there. You can also ask the advise of other parents on this site, people are pretty willing to share info.
