How do you trump Hawaii ;)
I want to go there sooooo bad someday!
I LOVE LOVE the Carolina's. Love them! North, South doesn't matter!
Have done OBX, beautiful, quiet beaches, beautiful rental homes. I also love Myrtle Beach. Lots to do, reasonable hotel prices, great food.
I "plan" or dream on, moving down to one of those areas someday!!!

I agree with Ally about New England. We have so much, and October is a great time with leaves changing and still moderate temperatures. There is all the historical stuff in Boston, with walking tours on the Freedom Trail and Duck Tours through the streets and right into the Charles River on amphibious vehicles. Old Ironsides, Boston Harbor tours, the harbor islands. We have an outstanding aquarium, children's museum, science museum, and beautiful waterfront. Historical areas in Plimouth Plantation and Old Sturbridge Village. We also have a vibrant theater and music scene. Lots of ethnic neighborhoods and fun restaurants, and it's all in a small geographic area. Salem is fun with the Peabody Essex museum and a flurry of activities particularly pre-Halloween. Gloucester and Rockport are old fishing towns with a lot of galleries and shops. Whale watch boats leave from a number of Massachusetts ports. New Hampshire is close and fun, with many inns, antique areas, the Kankamagus highway along a beautiful river with lots of outlook areas, ski lifts up to the mountaintops even before there is snow.

New York City is beyond belief, with museums, parks, Ellis Island, Statue of Liberty, the South Street Seaport, the Bronx Zoo, endless cultural opportunities, theater, ethnic celebrations, diversity. Expensive, but sometimes you can get a deal by staying in NJ and taking a shuttle boat or in CT and doing a short drive (if you avoid rush hour).

On the east coast we like Outer Banks (Corolla/Duck), Myrtle Beach (our Christmast trip this year), and VA Beach. All are family friendly and nice areas with plenty to do or relax.\\

Do you mean Atlanta, GA? We were there last 4th of July...it was hot, but not as hot as DC was at that time, ironically. I think it October you'd probably get 70's or even low 80's for temperature.

The Coca Cola Factory is a lot of fun, so is the aquarium. Lots to do in the city. There is a lot of history there too.

We loved Myrtle Beach. Love Chicago. There is a ton to do in Minneapolis/St. Paul too. Love Washington DC.

answers from Houston on

I always suggest Houston, but there's not THAT many outdoor things to do...just amusement and indoor based activities.

New England - NYC, historic trails in Philly and Boston and all kinds of Revolutionary War stuff, Lexington, Concord, Cape Cod, the Mayflower II, the rock and the plantation in Plymouth, Hyannis, Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket, fresh lobster in Maine, bed and breakfast in Vermont. The weather and colors should be AWESOME in October if not on the chilly side.

New Orleans - one huge party but very family friendly and very cultural and historical, good cajun eating - oysters, mufalatas, gumbo, biengets, French Quarter, French Market, eating in the warehouse district, WWII Museum (best ever!), City Park, Aquarium, Audobon Zoo, Audobon Park, carriage ride around Jackson Square, riverwalk, shopping on Magazine street...

Take a cruise, or fly to an all inclusive resort in Mexico (either side). Lots of white sandy beaches, crystal blue water, zip lining over clear waters, cliff climbing and diving, sailboat rides, catamaran rides, lots of snorkeling in open water or caves...

If you are looking for outdoor adventure, rock climbing in Colorado. They have 5K, 9K and 15K climbs. There are also plenty of family friendly climbs with easy inclines. There's also ziplining, hiking, rafting, camping and fishing. Just beware of bobcats.
