Although my son is not showing signs - there has been an exposure at school. I am extremely paranod about this. I went through this 3 years ago with my step son. I am looking for an alternative to the pesticide products. Something safer and more effective just in case. Does anyone have any suggestions.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you so much for all the advice - It is now almost 2 weeks passed the exposure and thank God no lice - but I did get the fairytaleshaircare products for prevention and I also got the teetree shampoo for myself. They are both wonderful - I hope to never have to test them but my son's hair now has softer shinier curls and The tee tree shampoo seems to be helping my escama(SP????) after just 2 days. So THANK YOU ALL.

There's a shampoo by Desert Essence that you can buy in health food stores. It says on the label that it is effective against lice, though I haven't tried it for that. It's completely safe, you can use it for regular shampoo.

We went through this and it was to the point that we dyed our hair and it worked. But when we did that we had to wash everything that we had and that was a pain but it finally worked.

Arbonne carries all natural products and they have a shampoo with tea tree oil which helps in the prevention of lice. My granddaughter battled this for over 3 months while it was going around her school and nothing was helping. We were around her a lot and never did get it because we were using this shampoo. They started using the shampoo and after they got it cleared up, even though it was still going around the school, she didn't get it again. If you want more info, I would be happy to get that for you. You can email me direct at ____@____.com you get it cleared up very soon. I know what a pain this problem can be.

Your son would be an easy fix, shave his head for summer. We had to do this twice with my son during school over the last 3 years. AND yeah, I used RID with pesticide.

For girls it's much more difficult yet, still, we had to cut hair shorter.

I hate the public school system, my kids never got lice until they started school. They just aren't stringent enough about removing students until the lice are ALL gone, so the entire class isn't reinfected.

Hi D.,

I went through this two years ago with my now 13 year old. She plays on a soft ball team and they would all share the same helmet. I bought the Rid X and nothing would work. So I called the Doctor and she told me to use real mayonnaise and a shower cap. She told me to put it on real thick and rub it into her scalp right before bed and leave it in for 8 hours, and in the morning use vinager to wash it out. The oil in the mayo kills them. It was much cheaper to purchase mayo than it is to use the Rid X. She has long thick hair and it was a pain to comb out but it did work. Just as a back up we did it twice within a week.

I feel your pain! We just went through this off and on for the last 3 months with my daughter. The only thing that we found that worked was putting tea tree oil in our shampoo and conditioners. You can buy tea tree oil shampoo and conditioner, but I found thta it was cheaper to buy the oil and put it in our bottles. We used a dilution of 12 drops per 16 oz of shampoo or conditioner. One other good investment is the Robi comb. You just comb their hair with it and it buzzes, if the buzzing stops then it has found a lice, and it zaps them. The tea tree oil is supposed to keep the lice away though, so it is a good prevention tactic. We are still using it, just to make sure.

I had to deal with this last year with my now 11 year old daughter. We did use the Rid X, but afterward was told that Virgin Olive Oil was good to use, specially after using something like Rid X because it helps moisturize the scalp again.

I even used it as a precaution, just saturate the hair with it, then put a shower cap on for an hour or so, then wash it like usual. We did this 3 nights in a row, just to be sure. It did help soften our hair too.

Good luck
