Leaking Diapers over Night

My thirteen month old son sleeps from 8pm until 8am. He's in the same diaper (Pampers Cruisers) all night and lately his diapers have been leaking. I'd say they probably leak 5 nights a week. It doesn't disturb his sleep but it's really annoying to have to change his clothes first thing in the morning and to have to change his sheets everyday. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. :)

We use Pampers Cruisers too for my daughter. As soon as they started leaking we went up a size. She is just over 2 now and in a size 6. Maybe 1 leak in about 8 months (she pulled diaper side off). Maybe it's different with boys?

Huggies are the best diapers on this earth. I have used them since my son was 4 months old...he is now 2. They absorb the most for the longest. I always get the ones in the red package as they are less bulky. Good luck.

Hi J.,
I had problems with my son's diapers leaking too. You might try the next size up for the nighttime. Also, I found if he slept with a onsie on the diaper would always leak because the onsie was holding the diaper snugger against his body. I use the Pampers BabyDry, and since I figured out the onsie thing haven't had any problems since. Otherwise, you may want to check his diaper before you go to bed and change it if it is full. Good luck!

Around that age, I changed my son's diaper brand to LUVS brand. They are cheaper, but also more absorbent than Pampers. They don't hold up as well as Pampers do durring the day when your toddler is walking around (if the diaper is wet, it will TOTALLY SAG in the middle) but for night time, they are great!!

When this happened to us we decided it was a sign to go up a size in diapers. That worked for us! (And for awhile after that we kept using size 3 for day and then 4 at night to save a little money because you know every time you go up a size you get fewer diapers for more $!)

We used pampers when our son was a few months old and we found they leaked when he was sleeping. We switched brands. We go to Sams and buy Huggies brand and it works great. Also cheaper by the cost per each diaper. We tryed Wal-mart brand and found the same thing. They also have things that tie on to the crib that is like a little blanket or cover that protects leaks from getting the mattress but you still have to wash that every day. !!! Good luck.

There are nighttime diapers and they work great!! Huggies makes them and you can usually find them at Target, sometimes Walmart and Babies R Us as well. There are also diaper inserts that you can use - just put it in the diaper for extra absorption. With the nighttime diapers you can use one size larger than he normally wears for a little extra coverage too!

Switch diaper brands for nighttime at least. ...and I remember a couple of times when moving up to the next larger size also eliminated leaking problems.

I think diapers are a bit like blue jeans...different brands are cut to fit different body shapes best. My son was long and thin...Pampers were the best until he was about six months old...after that they always leaked...but Huggies (that didn't fit him well when he was younger), were perfect for him after six months. My nanny's daughter (same age) was small and chubby...Huggies were too restrictive but Pampers were perfect for her. ...other friends had similar experiences with other brands. In short, I think trial and error is the key.

I had the same problem with my first son and Huggies overnights are AWESOME!! He never leaked through them! I had 2 boys close together and didnt want to buy 3 different kinds of diapers so for my 2nd son I have been using the vinyl white pants they sell for potty training and put them over his diaper at night...that works pretty well too, but he never leaks through like the first one did.

Also, I use a great sheet you can buy online or at babys r us called The Ultimate crib sheet. It snaps on to the crib over your sheet and has a built in mattress pad, so when they do leak through you just unsnap and wash, you dont have to change the sheets.

Another great tip someone once gave me is that when you do make the mattress, layer with mattress pad, sheet, mattress pad, sheet, etc (I bought 3 of each) so when you do have to change the sheet you can just pull of the top one and the next one is already there!

My kiddos sleep 12 hours at night too, but my son has always been the leaker and not my daughter. Before pull-ups we would use 1 size larger diaper at night and it seemed to do the trick. We also try to limit his water intake at night, but we aren't always successful. I just felt I would rather deal with the wet bed in the morning and have both my children sleep 12 hours every night.

Hello J.! My son had the same issue a few months ago. I think you pretty much have to come up with your own solution for this to help your child and his needs, but this is what helped me....I set an estimated bed time for the evening (depending on what we had going for the day) and reduced the amount of fluids he was getting 2 hours prior to that time. I had a bad habit of letting him keep his sippy cup with him in bed, so I had to break myself and him from that as well. Now we don't have leaky diapers, wet clothes, or wet bed. My friend had the same issue with her little girl and she found it easier to set an alarm to get up at the same time every night in the middle of the night and change her diaper. That sounds like way too much for me so I went with my plan. PLUS YOU CAN STILL USE WHATEVER BRAND OF DIAPERS YOU WANT! It has been great! Good Luck!

Thanks,

Our baby sleeps for 12 hours at night also. If you like Pampers, you should switch to Baby Dry for night. Also, Huggies Nighttime diapers work really well for us. If you still experience leaks with those diapers, you could try adding a doubler. They sell disposable doublers at BRU. I would fold it in half and place it in the front of the diaper, that way there is more absorbant material where they need it.

Have you tried putting cornstarch in his diaper before he goes too bed?
That always worked with my son when he was little.

My SIL double diapers at nights to avoid this. Maybe it would work for you too?

When she was 1 yr, I didn't use diapers specifically for nighttime. I just bought the next size bigger. So if she was normally a size 3 diaper, she wore a size 4 diaper at night. This worked well and they weren't as expensive as nighttime diapers.

I started using Huggies overnights with my 2yo this past spring/summer (her bladder seemed to start holding more than normal diapers could handle, even the next size up...). However, I have noticed a frequency of yeast infections occurring on her for no reason (as in she isn't on medication when one occurs); I have a feeling that these nighttime diapers may lock in a bit too much moisture and aren't as breathable (especially under PJ's), making the perfect condition for yeast diaper rashes...?

I use the pampers during the day and huggies overnights for the night on my daughter. She had the same problem and I couldn't wait for her to fit into a size 3 so she could use them. They start at size 3 and go up to a 6...I think. She hasn't leaked through these yet!! Hope this helps.

My daughter also slept 12 hr at a time. We bought diapers one size bigger than what she would wear during the day. They are no more expencive, and can be used when he does out grow the current daytime size. I know that it would happen overnight with my DD. It was nice to already have them on hand too.

I'm a little late in responding and I'm sure you've had a lot of response...but...Huggies makes an overnight diaper. The package is different from the regular Huggies package-more purple I think. Anyway they are great-very absorbant and no leaking for us so far. I sympathize with the changing sleepers and sheets every morning!

The same thing happened to my daughter, we just went up a size in diapers and that seemed to do the trick. They were a bit big for her but the overnight leaking stopped.

I highly agree with the recommendation of Huggies Overnights. We have the same issue.

I don't know if this will work for your situation or not, but I use those type of diapers with my daughter and also did with my son. I noticed with them that by the time the diaper was leaking, I needed to go up a size. Most times I didn't even realize the diaper was getting too small until I put the bigger size on. Also, there is nighttime diapers, try those. They have extra absorbancy to help make it through the night.

Get Huggies Overnights (I think, but they are Huggies). They are sometimes hard to find (especially at HEB), but I usually have pretty good luck at Target or Walmart. We used them for my son & now we use night time Pullups. He does occasionally have a leak, but it's pretty rare if I use the night time ones.

Huggies overnight(I use to buy these when he would nurse throughout the night, but now just use the regular ones), I think huggies in general absorb more than pampers, and pampers babydry(?) are the most absorbent of the pampers, cheaper too. I have a 16 month old who also sleeps 8 to 8, and never have a leak.

I'm sure you have already received this kind of advice, but here is my suggestion to you regarding what worked for us. I simply put my son in the next larger size diaper for the night time. Hope that helps.

I am by no means being hatefully, please don't take this response as so.

Have you tried changing his diaper before you go to sleep? Lots of kiddos aren't even bothered by a late-night diaper change and it's better for their skin especially when you consider urine contains ammonia and is not good held against the skin for hours at a time.

Just a thought. If you choose not to take it you should probably go with a size bigger or a night diaper.

When this happened with my son we went up a size in diapers for over night. They will hold more! We also tried the overnight diapers in a bigger size! Good luck! We still have an occasional leak but it is much better!

Hi, My son has had similar problems. If he falls asleep early I usually change his diaper when I go to sleep a few hours later. He is so asleep that he doesn't wake up.. I also like the Babies R Us Supreme Diapers. I've found they don't leak as much as the others.
Good Luck.

I am the mother of 4 children so I might can help you. I have always used Huggies Supreme and I'm a big believer in the night time diapers since I was also lucky that my babies all slept through the night. I also put waterproof pads under between the baby and the sheet and I placed a soft blanket over that. That way on the rare occasion they did soak their diaper and clothes I only had to change out the pad and the top blanket which were only the size of a bath towell. I've done this for them all until they were potty trained and woke up dry on a regular basis. These waterproof pads are available at Target and WalMart and any place that carries baby supplies and they're only about $7-$15 each. Sometimes you can find them in multi-packs. I've even cut them down to fit in their strollers and car seats because those items can get so yucky with all that babies do. I hope this helps save you the trouble of changing sheets all the time so that you are free to enjoy you little baby.

Try Huggies (maybe Pamper...Purple package) Overnights. I use Pampers cruisers during the day, too. But the overnights are great!
