Kindle or Nook? - Greenville,PA

I use the sony e-reader because I'm not tied to a store, I can connect the reader to my computer and fill it with any number of .txt .epub .pdf etc documents as I want from wherever I want. I use the third party software calibre ( http://calibre-ebook.com/ ) to keep track of my elibrary and I bought the wall charger since it didn't come with one for a quick charge if I wasn't near my computer. I use it every night and I've never been disappointed with it. The link below is the model I have. It's dated but I haven't felt the need to upgrade. It's been a real trooper.

I have a Kindle and I love it! I like that the screen is NOT backlit. I spend a lot of time on my laptop for work/school/fun so when I read a book, I don't want that backlit screen straining my eyes.

BTW www.pixelofink.com offers free or reduced price books for the Kindle and the Nook.

At this point, I don't think it matters. I got a Nook 6 months ago because of the Library option, but Kindle has that now too. I think you have access to all the books you would ever want to buy on either. The library thing isn't as great as I was hoping for because there are such long waiting lists for the most popular books, but still better than never getting to the library, which is what happens to me.

You can loan a book you have bought one time on the Nook-- but that's it. Not sure about the Kindle.

nook has way more free stuff available. nook has been available for library lending for a while. kindle only recently.
i have original nook - didn't want the color because I didn't want it backlit. it's like reading actual paper and ink so your eyes don't get tired.
got the nook because last christmas, kindle versions were not available from the library and very limited on free books at that time.
battery life is phenomenal - trip to hawaii, including layovers - one battery did it!

i got a nook cause i could download from our library, but i think kindle has that too now. i love my nook. i have the touch one. it is backlit, but you can adjust the setting so it doesn't have to be bright and i can read at night without a light which is excellent for me cause i read alot before bed and don't have to worry about keeping hubby up. TONS of free books to buy and you can lend books to friends. its awesome! plus if you have a local store, you can bring your nook in and hook up to their network and they give you coupons for the cafe & other stuff.

I was debating this myself for months as I watched the only bookstore in our area (Borders) close down. Then, my uncle gave me an iPad2 for my birthday. I had never actually considered it because I have an iPhone and I have a laptop, and I didn't really "get" how I would use an iPad. Well, now that I have one, it rocks my world. Yes, it is more expensive than the Nook and the Kindle, but it is incredibly useful in other ways. I use the thing non-stop, practically. Anyhow, I had had a concern about using a backlit device for reading books (eye fatigue, etc), but I just finished a 300+ page book on it using the iBook app, and it was fine! I also subscribe to the NY Times and the SF Chronicle online apps, so I read the newspaper on my iPad as well, which I enjoy. And of course, I can get my e-mail, do FaceTime, etc - so it's a handy little all-in-one device.

Anyway, I know you hadn't been thinking about the iPad, but it's one to consider for sure. As an aside, I do not have wireless service on mine so there is not an extra monthly cost that you *could* incur with an iPad. I just use our wireless network at home, or log on in the myriad of other places that have free wireless (Starbucks, etc). So far, so good!

I wasn't sure which I wanted or even if I would like reading on something like that, so I got some books on my android phone using the Kindle app. Love it. My husband has offered to buy me a kindle or nook, but I don't want either now. I like that I don't have anything extra to carry, I always have it with me and it fits in my hand. If you have a smartphone you might want to try that first.

I love my Nook Color. Very easy to use, good battery life, includes games, internet, Pandora, etc.
I have about 100 books on mine and it allows me to 'lend' books to friends.
It was a gift that someone gave me so I dont know how it compares/contrasts to the Kindle. Sorry.

I love my kindle. I already had an account with amazon so it makes it super easy to get all my books, and I like that the page looks like paper with no back lighting so I can see it well even in direct sunlight. Everyone I know who has a reader has a kindle, and we all love them, but since we all have kindle I can not really tell you much about the nook.

I too have a Sony ereader. I use my pubic librarys digital library. I never buy books! I do it all online. I love it.

I do like to see a book cover and read a book jacket or paperbacks back cover, so I do that if I am out and about (Sams club, Target, the actual BOOKSTORE! LOL), and I jot titles and authors down that looked appealing. Then I search for them in the digital library...or the regular part if its a no go. I am not opposed at all to real books in the mix! But I never actually spend time IN my library. I do it all online and resrve books, cds and movies on a very regular basis, pop into my library to drop off and pick up 3-4 times a month (I do home daycare so I get alot of kid books that way). I love using my public library in all these ways and its all suited to MY lifestyle and needs!

I have paid for aobut 10 books in the 3 years I have had my Sony eReader..and most of that was with a few gift cert I got with it from family for Christmas that year.

Next technolgy upgrade I make in this area will be to a tablet that supports it all, but I am in no hurry. My eye Dr told me the back lighting can harm your eyes. We all look at enough of that with screen time, and at least my reader does not have backlight, so it is like a REAL book in that way. SOmetimes I wish it was back lit for bedtime reading when hubby is snoozing, but I have done book reading in bed with the small lamp for over 20 years. He's used to it!

I have a kindle and I LOVE it. Yes, you can share books between friends and my local library loans kindle books as well. You can get old books as free downloads (published before 1923 or something) on Amazon.
This year for Christmas I want a Kindle Fire...

Love my kindle, I got the 1st generation - and will be replacing it with the new Kindle Touch or Kindle Fire when they come out! My GF has a Kindle and loves it.

What she doesn't like is not being able to see the covers of the books and turning the pages...

The Kindle works well in an airplane and she travels A LOT!!! I believe you can adjust the brightness of the screen and the size of the characters...

I have a Nook (the original) and the NookColor. LOVE them! I can put my .pdf files on it for work. i also have a few apps for my little guy to keep him occupied if we have some unexpected waiting. LOVE it!

Nook Color is my vote, I got one for my birthday. I love all of the options.
