Help! Our Babies Are up into the Wee Hours. How Do You Set a Bedtime Routine?

We have a 1 and 2 year old who are staying up into the wee hours. I have tried getting them tired during the day and a warm bath and quiet time before bed. It seems like they just "wake up" at night and can't get to sleep. They usually have a small nap about 1 pm. I have even tried keeping them awake all day, but they just fall asleep. I haven't had a good night's sleep since our 2 year old was born. I'm tired. I need them to go to sleep at a reasonable time, so I can have time to get things done, unwind, and have some 'me time' before I go to bed. I just can't seem to make anything work. Also, due to the size of our house, they sleep in our room with us. We have a king and a twin bed in the room.

What can I do next?

Hi L.,
I would reccomend cutting out the daytime nap completely, if they fall asleep anyway, you must wake them up, its the only way i can get mine to bed at night. Hope it works for you, good luck!

I'm the mom of a 7 week old little girl and since the 4th day she's been on a very strict schedule...she's already sleeping through the night... I learned how to set her on a schedule through the book the Baby Whisperer by Tracy Hogg... she also has a book for Toddlers as well... it worked miracles for me!

What time are they getting up in the morning? If you want them to go to bed at night, you have to get them up at the same time every morning. My kids are in preschool and have to get up at 6 am during the week. However, on the weekends.... I don't let them sleep past 7am because I want them to go to bed that night..... so that means that I have to get up at 7am as well. I would start by waking them up at an early time and let them take a short nap during the day (like 1 hour or less) and then keeping them up until after dinner. Depending on your lifestyle-- you need to set the times-- but you have to be consistent or it will all fall apart.
