Has any one signed up for UPromise to help save for college? Is this a good thing to start? What are the downsides with UPromise?

What can I do next?

I'm a upromise member and so far it's good. I just have to remember to use it. I also have to remember that just because you're saving money for college doesn't always mean you're getting the best deal. I recently bought a bedding set from Macy's and got 96 upromise $$$ so it's worth it to buy online when you can:) (Shipping was free too!!)

I signed up for UPromise five-ish years ago when my best friend from college first had a baby so that I could be doing something nice for her even though we lived across the country from each other, and I still haven't seen her daughter in person.

You give them your credit card and debit card numbers and participating companies put a small percentage of money in the account for the child's college fund. It's not for people who are paranoid about "big brother" knowing what they buy at the grocery store, and you will get email message updates of what companies support UPromise and special deals, so it's a few extra emails a month.

I think it's, in general, a good thing to do.

We haven't used UPromise, but we do use the GET program:
http://www.get.wa.gov/
It's a great program that lets you put money in now at current tuition prices so you pay today's prices for college that won't be happening for 18 years or so. Then when the time comes to use it, you can use the credits are any school. You purchase 100 credits for a full year of tuition and you're allowed to purchase up to 500 credits. It can also be used on schooling expenses (obvious things like books, dorms & supplies, but also things like food, travel, etc.).

I will say, I wasn't the one to do all of the research. We're lucky and my dad is the one who wanted to do this for our little girl. He looked into all of the programs available and found this to be the best. We're more than happy with it, but like I said, I haven't been the one to do all the research. I just wanted to let you know we were really happy with it in case you're looking into all your options. :-D

S.,

We signed up for the Upromise just after our son was born. So we've had it for almost 3 years now and not experienced a downside at all. We use it for everything, gas, groceries, all of our every-day living expenses and then we pay it off every month. So instead of using our debit card, we use our Upromise. We never pay interest and he's getting a great college fund. I am very credit conscious and watch it very closely. I think it was like free money because we would have bought the groceries, gas, gone out to dinner, etc anyway. This way we're getting a little bit back also. Good luck.

I signed up about 8 years ago. We now have over 400.00 in our UPromise account, mostly because our Safeway club card is linked to it. There are no down sides I can think of. Some people don't like club cards and other spending tracking programs because of privacy issues. So if you are okay with the Fred Meyer rewards and Safeway club cards, this isn't much different.

I signed up for it 6 years ago and haven't seen the funds go up hardly at all - I'm wondering if it's really worth it, or just another way for companies to get your shopping profile and gear their advertising toward that. I think maybe if you shop through their site all the time you can save more, but I never remember to do that. Also, for some reason it won't allow me to register my Fred Meyer card which is where I shop all the time. If you want to seriously save for college I would use a different program - for example we have GET in Washington State which allows you to purchase a year's tuition at today's rates and can be applied to any state college.

I signed up for it quite awhile ago and haven't found any downsides yet. It doesn't earn a whole lot, but every little bit helps! I also had my parent's sign up. They can split their earnings between their grandkids and redistribute as more are born.

I've signed up for UPromise.
I think it's a good thing, though it can be a bit slow to start.I'm still trying to figure out what foods etc that are part of the program so I can buy those if possible.
The thing I like best tho is that u can get all ur family members on your account to and what they guy will count also, or even friends.I've recruited several friends who don't have/want kids to put on my daughters account so we can earn faster.

I have been on it since it pretty much came out. Like others state, if you remember to shop through them you get more money. Also, I am sure having the credit card helps you to rack up more, but I do not have it. I mostly use it with the grocery cards. I figure every little bit helps. You can also have your family sign up to allocate to your child. If you are lookiking to really save GET is probably your way to invest, but as far as a no brainer method that gets some, not major result I would at least sign up your store cards.

I have been with UPromise for over two years and have saved over $400. It's little by little, but every little bit helps, and it's "free" money, right? There is no cost to sign up, other than a bit more SPAM, I suppose. You can also have friends/family sign up and they earn money for you too. Just register your frequent shopping cards, bank cards, and credit cards, and UPromise does the rest. Do remember to use your debit card as "credit" (unless you need cash back)... it does not cost you anything extra, is more secure for you (more protection on purchases, just like a credit card), and that is how you will get credit at UPromise (no credits if used as "debit"). I also have the UPromise mastercard. We just didn't need the other rewards programs out there, so we chose this one. I don't know how the APR compares, since we pay off every month, but there are no fees. Hope this helps!
