Halloween Costume Ideas - Augusta,GA

I'm thinking about making my 20 month old a cute ghost costume for halloween. I will be sewing a cape-like piece out of layers of white, sheer fabric to go over white clothes (couldn't find a pattern to my liking, so I'm making it up). I want to do something to whiten her face, as I don't want to put a mask on her, but I can't find anything I feel comfortable putting on her. The white face paint sold at places like Walmart says it's for over 3 and doesn't say that it's non-toxic, so I don't want to use that. I thought about baby powder (or flour), but I'm not sure how I would get it to stick and without it going everywhere. Does anyone have ideas?

I'm also trying to figure out what to do with her hair. She has curly hair, and I don't want to cover it up (it's too cute!) but I'd like to have it match the costume if I can get an idea.

Any ideas are appreciated , thanks!

What can I do next?

I am a hairstylist and a face painter (my sis is a professional clown) and many children this age will scream and cry if we attempt to paint the face.

My suggestion, is to buy a non-clogging powder in an ivory color and blush it on her cheeks. Or, do a small little ghost face paint on one cheek, but not the whole face. Not only that, but washing the paint off of a child's face can be difficult as well, or they will smear it all around as they eat candy or rub their eyes or whatever throughout the night.

The baby powder would work on her hair. Just style it, maybe put the bang section back in a little bow or headband so powder won't fall in her eyes, then sprinkle some baby powder on it. Just start out very small, and add a bit more as you go so you know how much her hair can take.

Why don't you get some white eye shadow (in powder or cream) and use a blush brush to put it on. Eye shadow will stay longer then baby power or flour, plus it's usually shimmery which would be cute for a ghost.
I looovvvveeeee curly haired lil girls. I wish I had their hair. I say just do it however it's cute, and if you want to add something, get those hair sprays that come in color, get white/grey or glitter.
On a side note, my baby loves it when I pretend to put stuff on her face with the blush brush (she has her own). She see's me do it to apply my powder and wants to do it too. Once I start she cracks up because the brush is tickling her face. So it might be an easy way to do it. =) Have fun!

You have some fun and creative ideas and I think halloweens to come are going to be very exciting.

Please, keep away from makeup on one so young. Their skin is ever so sensative and you especially do not want the breathing in things like baby powder and that is a major health risk.

Your idea of the costume is absolutely delightfull, and at this age, it will be quite perfect.

Have a happy and safe halloween.

If you go to an actual theatrical supply store they will have non toxic and hypo allergenic make up that we have used for all ages. They will be your best bet for the makeup. And they often times can give you great tips and maybe an idea for her hair. The local place here (taylor maid) has a hair salon in the shop so it's a great place to go.

My mom was famous for making our costumes and doing very elaborate face paint...I am thinking that some baby powder than a light coating of hairspray over the top, to set it, might just work for you...aerosol hairspray works the best, and make sure to shield her eyes (duh? huh?)...it wont be SUPER white but you will be able to see it.

Hope this helps

when my daughter was 2 she was a ghost as well. I also made a cape like costume, ours was satin. We sprayed her hair with white hair spray and made it look crazy. Then we painted a little black in a circle around her eyes. She looked awesome. I have pics, but don't think I can post them here. :-(

Your child is real young... she may not even like her face painted or have anything on her face.... and young kids like that often rub their face/rub their eyes and it can get into her eyes... regardless if it is non-toxic.

My kids at that age, did not like anything, any costume, or anything on their heads etc.

So gauge your child... at the last minute, she may not even want to 'wear' a costume...
But your idea for what you are making sounds real cute!

Maybe some sor tof wach off tattoo? I am not suggesting cover her face but find somehting like little white squigglies to put on or some little ghoast tattos on her cheeks. I know it's not quite wha tyou meant, but baby powder is probably a sneezing nightmare.

Also look for adult foundation. I owuldn't worry so much about it going on skin for one time use. The worry with the halloween paint is that ir smears and could be ingested through th emouth. But maybe you could find some really light foundation or concealer and powder.

Allergy test it all first a few days sahead on a small peice of skin!!

seems like i've heard that cornstarch is a safe alternative, but you'd need to double check on that. i'd put moisturizer on her face and then see if she will let you put something small over her eyes while you dust the cornstarch on her face. to dust it on maybe you could use an old facial powder puff or makeup brush. like the other mom suggested, i would definatly try it a time or two ahead of time to get it right. ly :-)
