Hi moms,

Does anyone have any information regarding the generic formula sold at Target and Costco? I am just wondering if it is comparable to Similac and/or has the same nutritional values. For whatever reason, I feel guilty trying to save a little money when it comes to my child's health and well-being.

Hi it looks like you got enough responds to say go for it without feeling guilty. I have 3 healthy kids 12,7,&2. Read the labels they only differ in price.

Kirkland is the BEST!!! $20 for two cans... you can't beat that! Formula has to meet stringent (sp?) standards, so "generic" doesn't mean substandard, it just means you're not paying for the name and advertising. Good luck!!!

Hi S.,
I don't know about Similac but here's what I do know about Enfamil.
I just cut and pasted an article (and there are many out there) regarding name brand and Target brand formulas.
My children never liked Similac which is what I first tried once I had to start feeding them formula. They always preferred Enfamil.
I used Enfamil once I couldn't breastfeed any longer for our older son and then switched to Target brand Enfamil-like formulas when I found out I was pregnant with my second child. My children seemed to prefer it better and it saved us a lot of money. It's was almost 1/2 the price of Enfamil.
Don't feel guilty. You are doing what's best for your child and for you. Our sons are now 5 & 4 years old and very happy, healthy and very smart little boys.
Good luck!

We were worried about this also, but our pediatrician assured us the generic stuff was great. I bought the Costco brand (LESS THAN HALF the price of Enfamil) & loved it!

i used both the generics of costco and sams club. They are fine. unless your baby needs a specific variety of formula (soy, augmentum, etc.) there is no reason to pay more. It is federally regulated and has to be the same.

My daughter was breastfed so I don't know first hand. But, two of my friends have used the Kirkland signature brand formula from costco and their babies love it! And well, so does their pocket! :) amd they all have the same nutritional value. Kinda the same as generic meds. Hope this helps :)

I used the generic enfamil, but not until my son was eating solids. I think it's fine.

I used the Kirland brand for my three children. It has the same ingredients. Compare the labels. It's cheaper than the brand name and has, from what I remember, the exact same amounts of all ingredients.

Just to let you know. "Kirkland" does not manufacture anything. They contract with major manufacturers so you get name brands without the label.

The labels on the costco brand show the comparison - identical. Don't feel guilty. My son is a happy, healthy kirkland formula boy!

I think the Costco formula is closer to Enfamil than Similac as far as % of various vitamins and DHA. I don't recall if the Target brand was closer to one than the other, but I do remember it having some little floaties when the formula was mixed. I am due with #2 in a couple months and plan on trying the Costco brand if BF doesn't work out. (I also used Similac the first time around, more or less for the same reason - if you decide to stick with Similac, they sell that at Costco, but it's nearly twice as expensive as their Kirkland). It's all good stuff! Just make sure to make the switch gradually as some babies take a few days to adjust to different brands.

Congrats on the new little one!

I didn't use formula, but I am very much into nutrition. Check out the ingredients and the nutritional panel. See how many of them match up and also compare the values. You want to make sure that your child is receiving the same amount from the brand that you were switching from.
Ignore that other post.. rude!

I fed my daughters the Costco brand. My pediatrician said that they were equal in nutritional content. They are healthy (my 2 1/2 year old has NEVER needed an antiobiotic, and my 5 1/2 year old is rarely sick) strong and happy. Don't feel guilty.

Good luck!

Yes they are very simular. unlike other places Baby formula is really regulated. It has to have certian. things in it. My friend had a baby 3 years ago and he was fed costco formula and he is in the 93% in Height and 90% in weight. He eats very well and was always a very healthy baby.

I tried it all. I wasn't able to use the generic Kirkland since it was really thick and made my son constipated. I think we went through about 5-6 brands before I tried Nestle Good Start which is the only one that didn't smell or cause my son issues. You might find that you need to try a couple of different types before your child finds what is best for him.

Back (8 & 10 years or so ago) when I used formula for my son and first daughter I found out that Target and Walmart formulas are made by the same company. It's possible that Costco is as well. Honestly there are requirements on formula and the companies could not sell them if they weren't made to a standard sufficient to sustain a baby's nutrurional needs. Save the money. And be guilt free. Millions of babies have been fed the less expensive store brand formulas and I haven't heard a single tragedy resulting :)
