Formula, Am I Crazy?

I had the same experience over 8 years ago. I crunched the numbers and the few bucks per week I would have saved with powder wasn't worth the misery it caused. Personally, I'd ditch what you have (I know, it's expensive) and get more pre-mixed.

It's all about the mixing. It's mixed better in the factory. You can use a blender to blend it well and then put it in the fridge and give it time for bubbles to disappear from the blending process.

Have you ever noticed the difference between a slim fast shake and the powdered form? Your baby could, I can. Powder just isn't the same, if it was why would it cost less.

When we mix the powder, we usually shake or stir it in. Consequently, we add air into the milk, which of course produces gas. So, nope, not crazy!

You can also try Gripe Water. Most lactation clinics and health food stores will carry it. It is a mild her blend meant to soothe sore tummies. And bicycling her legs will help too.

My son was the same way. I've known many babies who were, as well. I think it's common. I didn't have much luck with mixed formula in the fridge, and you have to use ot so quickly. Colic Calm is wonderful product. It worked well for us, but like any product it depends if it works for your child.

We bought the Playtex VentAire bottles and had great luck with those. I noticed that with the bottles we started out with (Avent), my baby had a lot of gas - this was both with breastmilk AND formula - so the bottle itself can make a big difference, not just what's inside the bottle. Anyway, they make all kinds of bottles that are supposed to reduce gas. The Playtex ones were not very expensive, which was why we tried those, and they worked out great for us.

If you can afford to do the pre-mixed formula, then of course that is a great option also. It's just a bit more pricey, which is why we didn't use it. I think you can mix your own formula and it can sit in the fridge for up to 24 hours, so that may be an option as well.

With my oldest, we ended up having to premix and letting it sit in the fridge due to gas. It can sit in there for up to 24 hours. It does help in getting some of the air bubbles out (plus, you don't have to worry about measuring water/formula in the middle of the night!). :)

Your not crazy lol! When you mix the powder formula there is no way to not get any bubbles in it so that's probably what causes the gas. With my nephews that I kept they both had the same response to powder versus pre-made. We got the Dr. Browns pitcher and used it to premake formula for the day and sit it in the fridge. It has rotating blades that gently stir the formula instead of you having to shake it. This helped dramatically with both of them. Try the premixed for baby for about 6 months. By then you should be able to use the powder.

Many years back I used the liquid concentrate and would do bottles (glass) up for about two days. But then the processing was different than today. The milk in the bottles never got a chance to "grow" anything because my son was busy drinking. It was just easier to have the bottle on hand rather than mixing it up when the child is hungry and crying to eat. Because when they cry they introduce air into their little tummies as well and you have a hard tummy and no food and an unhappy baby.

There are lots of reasons for gas and tummy troubles, so ask your doctor about acid reflux because the nurse told me that almost half of babies have it nowdays. And, it can make a baby cry. We used a quart bottle and mixed the formula in it and it can stay in the fridge for 24 hours without any problem. Just mix the formula and let the air bubbles come out so that when your little one gets it they arent there any more. I like the idea of a blender or food processor. I haven't tried that one, but mixing with warm water sure does make a difference!! Good luck!

It could be the H2o that you are using, the powder not mixed completely & warm or, at least room temp. is alwayz better for baby's digestive system.

We used to mix bottles each night before going to bed so that that was one less thing to do at night. I would usually do two at a time during the day. It can really help some babies who are more sensitive to gas.

If your daughter is used to the formula being nice and warm, you will, of course, need to warm the bottles. We chose to gradually get our son used to colder bottles. It only took a couple of days and he was happy with bottles straight out of the fridge. This was an absolute life saver for us! I asked our ped, and she said temperature doesn't matter as long as you don't burn baby.

Guess I'm lucky we used the concentrated all those years ago! I was given powder stuff whenever I watched dgd - and I never thought it mixed well! It sure didn't seem to sit well w/her either - so I went out and bought some of the concentrated one weekend and changed her! The difference in that short of time was amazing!

And nobody does the old-fashioned way of doing bottles any more! Most of ya'll on here would probably think that much sterilizing was silly!

My daughter had the same thing happen, it's a corn starch sensitivity just stick with the premix and you'll be great!

you're not crazy-did you use tap water? try Aqua Fina-or any other reverse osmosis water

Calms Forte is the remedy of choice. Used for nearly 100 years. I used it. Gave it to my daughter when her son was young. Gas and teething pain both fold in the face of Calms Forte.
Formula is so iffy for babies. One batch doesn't exactly match another.
