The school usually provides a list for each grade level.

Off the top of my head the list for my daughter who is also starting first grade was crayons, washable markers, sharpened pencils (no.2), scissors (fiskar), glue sticks, pocket folders, 2 boxes of tissue, a pencil box. There might be a little more but I think that was the majority of what we bought.

If you go to the elementary school, they should have a list posted on the office window or might even have one posted on their website. The items are a lot different now than when I was a kid!

We just moved here to Layton a few weeks ago from out of state and my son too is in first grade. I called the school and asked what was needed and the state of UT covers everything that is needed for you daughter, however, the teacher may request certain items for the class. For instance, my 8 year old in 3rd grade received a letter from her teacher asking for expo markers, a binder, pencil box, pencils and colored pencils. I wouldn't worry about it as the teachers will get be sure to send home the requested items.

I know what you mean my son is going into the first grade also. I am pretty sure that you can get shopping list for school at stores like Wal-mart, etc. Or even at the school.

I am not to nervous about my son going for a full day of school cause he went to all day kindergarten so he already knows what it is like to be in school all day.

Anyways hope I help you some good luck with everything.

In our area, walmart, target, and kmart all carry supply lists for the schools in their area. If yours doesn't, usually the things kids need for school are pretty basic, pencils, colored markers, crayons, lined paper, glue and/or glue sticks, tissues, and our schools ask for snacks. You should be able to go to the school and ask for the specific teacher's supply list in the office. Or, if you wait for your child's class assignment paperwork to come in the mail, that will often have the supply list included as well. Good luck and congrats to your daughter for moving on to the next step!

Usually the school district will send out a letter with your child's teacher assignment about what's needed for class, and what not to bring. If you don't get a letter, I'd say call the school, usually the office opens in early August to get ready for classes to start. Our school district said we'd be getting our information in early August, but I know different areas do things differently.

Your schools website should have a supply list available.

It has been my experience that your daughter's teacher will either mail a school supply list before school starts or she will get one from her teacher the first week of school.

There should be a school supply list for her class. I would either call the school and request one to be sent or look on the school's website, as some teachers and schools are very specofoc about what htey need students to have. Usually a guarantee that they will need scissors, glue, pencils, crayons.

The school should have a website and on that website there should be a list of supplies needed for that grade. Check it out. It will probably tell you everything that your child needs and more.

If you don't recieve a list from your kids school prior to the beginning of school (you can call and ask) then send your daughter with the bare basics the first day. If they don't give our a list before they usually send one home the first day. Basics would include a couple pencils and a notepad in a backpack. Don't buy to much in the begining or you will end up buying stuff you didn't need.

Hey There,

I'm a teacher, and technically, in my district, we can't give out "required" supply lists. We can give out supply "recommendations". If you don't get a list FROM THE TEACHER, wait until school starts and either email or speak with the teacher directly to find out what supplies are needed. A lot of teachers order class sets of supplies in the spring and she/he may want you to donate others items to the class instead. Hope this helps.

I used to work in a k-1 class. It really depends on the tescher but my advice would be: Backpack, folder for homework, pencils (sharpned), paper, a note asking what else she'll need. Just a side note. Teachers really appreciate notes. It gives us a chance to answer your questions but we have all day to do it. Good luck!

Hi A.!

I am a teacher and taught first grade for a number of years. If you haven't yet received a list of supplies needed from your daughter's teacher, then you'll probably get one on the first day of school. I would get some of the basics: a backpack, a good supply of pencils, a hand held pencil sharpener, chunky erasers (not the pencil top kind - they break too easily), a pair of child friendly scissors, a couple of glue sticks, crayons, markers, and a couple of the pocket folders.

Every classroom teacher runs things differently - some may ask you to contribute to a "classroom supply" so the teacher can pass things out to students as needed. Other teachers may ask that each child supply their own items. It really depends on the what the school is willing to supply, and how the teacher wants things done. If you don't want to buy all of the things above until you know more what her teacher will want, she'll be fine with a backpack, a few pencils and an eraser for her first day. If her school has a "meet the teacher" event - definitely attend if you can. Usually teachers will have their supply list handy at this event. If you can't attend, ask another parent to pick one up for you, or call the office and ask them to send one to you.

Sorry about the long, drawn out answer... can you tell I'm a teacher as well? :-)

Good luck - first grade is such a fun year!

I don't know where Layton is but I do know that Portland Public Schools have a list of supplies that they want you to bring. A very specific list. I suspect that all schools have such a list. My granddaughter's list included things that my daughter didn't have to take to school. Such things as tissues (kleenex) and several of everything else such as 3 glue sticks, several pencils etc. M.

Hi.
The school your daughter is going to should have available a list the supplies she will need. Supply lists are also usually available for download at your school's website.

Local stores (I know Target does this)will have school supply lists in the school supply section of the store.

Hope this helps! My oldest is going into second grade, and I think we spent $50-$60 on her supplies last year--it's ridiculous!
