Diapering Question?

Hello Mamas:

Happy Mother's Day!

Do any of you use gloves when diapering your children?

I work as a health care provider and although I don't have children wearing diapers at this time (home or work), I do get to spend lots of time with my sister's kids 2yrs and 5yrs. When diapering the little one, I find it a habit to want to reach for gloves since I'm so accustomed to it SO many hours in the week. I didn't use gloves when my girl was a baby, and sister/bro-in-law don't either; but handwashing is paramount.

Just wanna know if any of you have gloves at your diapering stations? Yea, or Nay?

Thanks, M.

What can I do next?

I hadn't ever thought of using gloves. It seems like such a waste:( I keep sanitizing gel in about 4 places around the house and in the diaper bag and use that after diaper changes and flushing poo from the cloth diapers in the bathroom.

I don't use gloves, but do handwash. However if I have to change someone elses kids I would prefer them, but am too embarrassed to say so. Even my own newphews...And it always seems others kids stink worse than mine... I HATE changing someone elses kids! When its my own kids germs it doesn't seem that bad but when it someone elses.. I am a total germaphobe. Same thing with puke.. I see someone puke and I feel sick but my kids can throw up on me and it doesn't phase me at all

I never thought of using gloves to change my sons' diapers when they were babies. I never see anyone using gloves while changing diapers. I always washed my hands after changing the diapers. Washing hands with soap should be good enough to get rid of germs.

Actually...

There is evidence that shows that being exposed to the different bacteria in a mothers own baby's diaper helps a breastfeeding mom produce antibodies in her milk to combat certain bacteria.

I'm not against wearing gloves washing your hands obsessivly by all means, but sometimes we are so obsessed with being clean that we forget that there are good things about bacteria, especially good bacteria. Though, when it comes to other babies diapers I've changed, I sometimes long for gloves, and a whole disposable suit for that matter.

No, but sometimes I wish I had. I can see where they'd be a good idea when you covered hand to elbow in poop. :)

It's probably just a personal preference whether to use gloves or not. If you were in a daycare situation, it might be a good idea so as not to transfer bacteria from one child to another. I can't say I've heard of anyone using gloves.

M.,

You jynxed me! I was reading your request earlier today and I have to admit, I've never even thought about using gloves. Then, this evening while checking my 10 month old son, my fingers accidentally slipped into the back of his diaper and into something that I can only describe as warm peanut butter.

Where the heck are those gloves!

I don't use gloves, but because I worked so recently at a daycare/preschool, I occasionally find myself first looking for gloves (especially with the really messy ones), so I can relate.

Nay, I never use gloves.

Though my daughter's daycare did, for obvious reasons.

I did not with my son, but it's funny you bring it up. I am fine changing a wet diaper but since I've been working in the hospital, whenever I change a baby diaper that has poop in it I do catch myself looking up for a pair of gloves. I really believe as long as you use good handwashing your fine, but habit does get the best of us!

I was a CNA in a nursing home for about 2 years, and when I went to change my nephew's diaper I was looking for the gloves out of habit, lol. When/if I have another child I will probably have gloves at the changing table, but may not always use them, I never did with my daughter who is now 10.

fortunately i get to stay home quite a bit with my daughter, i only work 6-7 days a month & her dad watches her the days i do work. i have been in nursing for alittle over 10yrs now & find it very hard to break the "gloves" thing myself. i don't use them with my daughter, but when i watch other people's kids & have to change or clean them i find myself slipping on a pair. my hubby tells me i'm a germaphobe & picks alittle bit, but in a way he's right. i know where my kids are & what they are around, but you can never be too sure about other peoples' kids, so i'd rather be safe than sorry.

I never used gloves to diaper mine or any other I was watching. When I threw away the diaper, I just naturally went and washed my hands. I don't remember seeing anyone use gloves to change a diaper. In certain instances, you wished you had gloves or a bathtub handy, but, no, never did see it.

I don't currently have any glove, but I have used glove before when one of the kids had a rotovirus. Of course I still washed my hands, but I liked the extra security of the barier between me and that diaper.

It is not necessary to wear gloves when your are at home changing little ones a long as you wash your hands as soon as you have finished. If working at a day care, yes then you probably should, you are so many more little ones. And you do not really know anything about those childern as you do family.

that's the funniest thing ever! i guess if you're accustomed to using gloves it makes sense.... no, i've never used gloves, and never seen any of my friends do it either. i keep hand sanitzier around, but i prefer just to wash my hands afterward(less chapping that way..)

No, I can't stay I've ever used gloves when diapering any of my four children. But, there have been times I wished I would have thought of that! (like when I have gotten a little poo under my fingernail! Blah! LOL)
