Dentist Good with Kids?

Hi. My kids currently see a pediatric dentist in the Portage Park area and she is a nightmare. We were there this week at 2:15 for a 2:30 appointment. We got in the room finally at 3pm. My son needed 2 xrays and they ended up having to do each side twice because they couldn't get them to come out the way they wanted. The hygentist cleaned my son's teeth but by 3:40 the dentist still didn't come in our room. My boys were antsy and wanted to go home. (They are 5 and 7) The office has a kind of open floor plan and I could see there were a few kids waiting in the waiting area to be seen after us. Finally I asked the hygenist when would we see the doctor and she said she had another patient before us. I told her that we couldn't wait anymore and that we had to go. I explained that making us wait all that time was unacceptable. She seemed really surprised and apparently went to tell the dentist. The dentist came in like there was no problem counted my sons teeth and said that was all she had to do, and left. By the time we left I was so angry... and there's actually more to this story because I didn't explain the whole kid in the waiting room who started projectile vomiting... I really don't want to go there ever again... So does anyone know of a good dentist for kids in the Portage Park neighborhood??

What can I do next?

she was put on this earth to be a pediatric dentist - great with kids, and works alone - you will not even overlap with other kids in the waiting room. i can't say enough great things.

Hi A.,

Nightmare is right! Please consider going east to Rogers Park, where our wonderful dentist practices. Jim Furmanek, ###-###-####. We have never had any other dentist and my sons, now 22 and 18, have never complained about going because he is fast, funny and genuinely knows them. We used the orthodontist he recommended and have been very satisfied with him, too, Dr; Furmanek's office is friendly and efficient and there's never NEVER a wait like what you describe. If you like, you can take the boys over to the lakefront afterward -- there's a good playground just a little north and straight east from the Loyola El stop, and they'll enjoy that.

Good luck!

Dr. Raymond Hatland is great with kids, but I think he is further north. You can google him, though.

Hi A. O
My dentist is not exactly in the Portage Park area, but not too far. I started off with his father when I was 8yrs. old. He took over some of his dad's patients when he started. I have been seeing the son probably about 15-20 yrs. He is great. I have four kids that all go to him and they all like going. NONE of them ever had a fear of going to the dentist and they started at age 3 yrs. He is excellent with them as he has younger kids also. When I make appointments I try to get all 5 of us in on one day. They are usually able to accommodate me on that. With all 5 of us we are probably in and out of there within 2 1/2 -3 hrs. I highly recommend him. His name is Dr. John Kelly. He is located on Devon/Central. 5350 W. Devon, Chicago ###-###-####

We go to Dr. Mary Tierney, City Kids Dental ###-###-####). She is absolutely terrific with kids. We have not had to wait more than 10 minutes in her office ever. Its spotless clean and well managed and completely kid focused. The kids receive oral hygiene "goody bags" when they leave. She takes her time and shows them their teeth on the computer screen and has a great rapport with the kids (and adults). I really can't say enough good things. Not in Portage Park, but not too far away either. She's located on Western Ave. just west of Lincoln Square. Good Luck!

We go to "Dentistry for Kids," 4801 W. Peterson Ave. (Peterson and Cicero), ###-###-####. We just went there for an 8:30 appt. this morning, got there at 8:15, got seen early, and were out of there by 8:40. Our dentist is Dr. Furusho. They are a true "pediatric" dentistry practice, meaning, the kids go in there without the parents, although for the first visit parents are allowed to observe the kids from behind. My daughter loves going to the dentist and we really like Dr. Furusho.

I was about to recommend City Kids Dental/Dr. Mary Tierney- but Carrie beat me to it! We've never had an issue there- she is great.

4700 N. Western, FYI. And- concur with all Carrie said: never waited more than a few minutes, and seems she NEVER double books, so she and asst. are with you your whole visit.

A., my sons and I have gone to the same dentist since they were quite young. I think my youngest was 3 when we first went there-he saw his chart once a few years ago! They are now 25 and 22. This dentist is at 2335 W. Foster, ###-###-####, Dr. F. Robert Wilkin. His assistant Vicki has been there longer than he has and he's been there since probably 1988. He has teen aged kids of his own. The office is small, only two chairs, and they are terrific. I've sent several people there and think many of them still go. Good luck.
