Daughter's Skin--rash, Eczema, or Allergy?

This week my husband and I noticed some (three) circular patches on my daughter's legs. They're about one inch in diameter and kind of red along the outside, looking like a ring. They don't hurt her, or are raised, but they feel kind of rough and scaly. They are only on her legs, not anywhere else on her body. We haven't introduced any new foods I can think of--should I be worried? What can I do to treat it? Thanx.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanx to all you moms!! ringworm never occurred to me!! My daughter did start swimming classes, goes to daycare, so she could've gotten it from anywhere. I started an antifungal cream, and after only one week, the two smaller patches are gone and the big one is clearing up. I guess if they come back, I'll take her to the ped in case it's something else. You moms rule!!

Does it look like this: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=ring+worm. If so, you should call the Doctor to get some medicine for it. If it doesn't look like this, it could be Eczema in which case you have a longer term problem but one that could be rectified with creams and changes in diet.

Good luck.

It sounds like ringworm. Now, don't worry, ring worm is a virus that is picked up, its not an actual worm. You can treat it by washing the areas with Dial soap several times a day and putting an anitbiotic cream on them. It will go away in a few days to a couple of weeks. It is very common for small children to get ringworm. My kids use to get it all the time when they were little.

This sounds like it could be ringworm. My son wrestles and it spreads from contact. If she is in daycare she might have gotten from someone else. The Dr. can prescribe a cream for it. I also have had to deal with eczema with my kids and it doesn't usually look like a ring like ringworm does.

If it is a perfect round ring...sounds like ringworm but I'd have the doc look at it or look on-line to compare what you are seeing to what it might be. Babybargains book website has a great part of with pictures on file for various rashes. The treatment if it is ringworm is to put lotrimin on it. Good luck.

What is ringworm?
Ringworm — which has nothing at all to do with worms — is a contagious fungal infection of the skin. It can be itchy and unpleasant, but it's not painful or dangerous.

What are the symptoms?
If your preschooler has ringworm on his body, he'll have one or more scaly patches, probably between the size of a dime and a quarter. While the patches don't always start out round, by the time they're about half an inch across, they usually form a scaly ring around a smooth center. As the fungus grows, the ring gets larger, but it usually stops growing by the time it's about an inch in diameter. The rash can be dry or moist, and it can appear almost anywhere on the body.

When the fungus affects the scalp, the rash usually has less of a ring-like appearance. Instead, you might notice either patchy, scaly areas or bald spots on your child's head. You may also see stubs of hair broken off in the middle of the bald spots.

Your child might also develop an area of inflammation, called a kerion, in response to the fungus. It'll appear as a moist, swollen area on the scalp with pustules (little pimple-like bumps). This will clear up when you treat your child's scalp for the ringworm.

How should I treat ringworm?
For any unusual rash on your child, start by talking with his doctor. For ringworm on the body, she'll probably suggest an over-the-counter antifungal cream. You'll need to apply it twice a day, covering an area about an inch beyond the rash.

Good Luck!

Sounds like dry patches - do you live in a cold climate?

I use Aveeno (the blue stripe) 24 hour moisturizer on my little girl and benedryl at night to control the scratching from the excema. After 2-3 days it dissapears.

If you have vaseline - you could use a dap of it on the patches at night.

When Sam has a breakout I give baths every other night.

I also use all free and clear for clothing detergent.

Hi V.! My son started having those spots at around 18 months and his first pediatrician told me to mix Eucerin lotion and 1% hydracortizone and put it all over him from head to toe twice a day. I did that for quite a while and when it didn't get better they gave me a steroid cream to use. We moved and started going to a new pediatrician who told me that it was exzema for sure and that he wanted my son tested for allergies. Come to find out my son is allergic to peanuts, cats, dogs, peaches, strawberries and yogurt!! They say that eczema is the first sign of an allergy. We waited until he was like 2 1/2 before we gave him peanut butter and he had a horrible reaction (we had tried this before the doctor sent him to be tested for allergies!) It is horrible for him. He is only 3 years old and we had to get rid of our dog and we have to read EVERYTHING before he eats it. Even if it is processed in a facility that makes peanuts he can't have it! I never knew how many things are processed on the same machines as peanuts! It is really scary! They say that ever reaction gets worse. Sorry to ramble on, but I just wanted to give you a heads up. I thought it was nothing and so did our first pediatrician, however it turned out to be a huge deal. Let me know if you need anything else. I would have loved to have had someone to talk to about this since I knew nothing about it. Good luck and take care!

FYI'Ive worked with Conventional Doctors and Holistic/Natural medical doctors for 25 yrs. Sounds like ring worm and or Eczema. If its exzema, get her off Cows milk. Its the number 1 allergen for children. There are alternatives.

Conventional Drs will prescribe antibiotics, (not a great idea) since anti-biotics weaken the immune system.

Holistic/Natural doctors will tell you she needs EFA's Essential Fatty Acids. Flax Seed Meal 1 tablespoon on top of cereal or food or Flax seed oil rubbed on the area daily. It may take about 3-6 weeks, but it will go away with no side effects like anti-biotics. Your daughter and the entire family should consider taking the EFA's also.

God Bless and Good luck

My 1 1/2 year old son had it about a week ago. My mom thought it was ringworm. Well, naturally I was freaked out. I took him to the doctor, and it was eczema. The doctor prescribed some cream, and it is working. It is because of his allergies. We are hoping that he will outgrow it. He said not to give babies a bath every day. He said every other day. He also said that without the creme, it will take longer to heal. The best bet would be take her to your doctor just to be sure.

My daughter has eczema and the spots you describe are exactly like the first ones my daughter had. Watch for the red scaliness around the "crease" areas ie back of the knee. The air is exceptionally dry right now which could be why it's showing itself now. Over the counter cortisone cream is the first thing a dr will tell you to use, moving on to a prescription if that does not help. Also daily use of Eucerin can help a lot. Do not use anything with a scent including laundry detergent and esp fabric softener. Also no baby wash/shower gel. Plain bar soap like dove or ivory is what they recommend. Obviously i am not a dr and am not trying to tell you not to take her to one, just sharing what i know. HTH

Hi! From your description, it sounds like eczema because my son who is 8 months had similar red, circular, non-raised rough patches. We went to his pediatrician and he was diagnosed with eczema which she said he might grow out of. She didn't prescribe any sort of steroid cream which I was happy about and told us to constantly put lotion on him. She recommended Cetaphil, but we ended up using Waleda Calendula Lotion which has been amazing. I highly recommend this lotion. You should try to use perfume-free lotions, laundry detergent, and soaps for your daughter because they are more gentle for the skin.

Go to your pediatrician to get a definitive diagnosis because if it's not eczema, you'll want to get it treated as soon as possible.

Hope this helps and good luck!

My 13 month old is going through the same thing. All over his legs were about a dozen raised scaly dry patches. I called his dr. which suggested it may be a type of eczema. I switched to Cetaphil body wash and a lather with Aveeno lotion (specifically made for eczema). I put the lotion on 4x's a day. After 48 hours it's clearing up. As long as you didn't switch detergents, or introduce new foods it may be severe dry skin. Ringworm is unlikely unless your child has been exposed to feces, and pinworm would be found in your child's diaper in the am. Always check with your dr. though. Good luck.

It sounds like it could be ringworm. This is easily contracted through contact with hard surfaces (alot of school wrestlers get it from the mats). You can treat it at home with an over the counter yeast infection cream and then cover with band aids. If you see no improvement in 5 or 6 days, have your doc or nurse practitioner take a peek at it.

Hi V.,

My son has had similar skin issues. One of the things that has really helped, and was recommended by a pediatrician, is a cream I concocted by mixing equal parts (about 2 Tablespoons) of Eucerin cream and Aquaphor and a squirt (about an inch in length) of original strength hydracortisal cream. All can be found over the counter. I just mixed them all in a tupperware container and put a little on each patch of skin about 2 times a day. Within a few days, it was gone. You may also try Dreft laundry detergent and dye/perfume free dryer sheets.
Good luck.

I don't want this to come across as over-reacting, but I would definitely call the doc and check with him as there are several serious issues that would have the same symptoms. I know we had the same type of "rash description" in our family last year and we were told to come in and have it looked at because they thought it was either Lyme disease (from a tic bite - which take several weeks to months to appear) or Ringworm (from our pets). For us, it did turn out to be ringworm. Both issues are easily treatable, but will not go away without treatment, and either one could get more serious without treatment. So I would just error on the side of caution this time, not ignore this symptom, and get it checked out by the doc.
Wishing you all the best!

I have also had luck with aveeno, they have a new excema care cream that works well. My husband and I have a routine that he gets cream put on every time we give hima bottle, that way it is not getting out of control. Watch what soap you use, as that is important too. I use california baby, which can be purchased at target and use the sensitive skin kind. It has no perfumes or dyes and also no parabens, which is important. This should help a lot. It is also very important to make sure you put a good amount of cream on after the bath as warmer water tends to aggravate it also. Hope this helps....

It does sound like ringworm (which is fungal and has nothing to do with worms). So, you probably should call your ped just in case. But, if it's eczema, decreasing the frequency of bathing will help a lot. I know that we all tend to think that kids need baths every day or we do it as part of a bedtime routine, but they really don't need to bathe that often. My son had horrible skin problems as a baby until I decreased the frequency of his baths. As an infant I bathed him only once a week (which is plenty) and when we started solids we started bathing him as needed (usually every couple of days). He hasn't had any skin problems since for the most part, but I do notice that when he gets more frequent baths, his legs get scaly patches of eczema. Also, use a good moisturizer every day, even on days when you don't bathe her. Aveeno is really good, which some moms already mentioned. Especially if you live in a dry climate.

My daughter has this and the dr told me that it is eczema. You can try to use over the counter lotions to help it heal. Try really thick lotions like aquaphor or an eczema baby cream in the infant section. Only give luke warm baths and don't bath your child everyday. That tend to make it worse. If it gets really bad your dr may want to write a script to help keep it at bay. Hope this helps out!

I rubbed it all ofer his body before his nap and bed and when he woke up, it was all gone and made his perfect little skin even softer. hope yhis is helpful.

Hello! My name is B.... this is very common in children... my friends baby has it too. I also have psorasis which it's just circular patches of dry skin.
The thing that works the best and her peditrician even recommended it... is Arbonne. Arbonne is a swiss company with natural prodcuts. They have no chemicals or animal product and by produts. It will clear it up. They have a baby line called ABC baby care... they have baby oil, lotion, and the wash and sunscreen too. I use it all on my 12month old! Let me know if you are interested in the products and I can send you more information.

Actually it sounds like ring worm to me. My kids have had this and so have I. Just take her to the doc and they'll give you an anti-fungal cream and it'll go away. Ringworm can come from all kinds of places but most suprisingly from houseplants! Nothing to fret over but get it taken care of....

By your description it sounds like your daughter may have ringworm. It is a fungal infection (that is contagious), it is often spread by animal contact but can be spread other ways. The treatment would either be a oral antifungal or topical antifungal. You would need to go to your doctor to properly diagnose and treat. It is hard to say for sure that is what it is but it sure sounds like it to me. Until then remember it is spread through contact so no sharing towels, clothes, etc. and wash hands often. Hope this helps :)

This sounds like ringworm. Ringworm is a fungal infection and can be transmitted to any of you. Take her to her doctor and have it checked out. =)
