Cloth Diapers? - Bellaire,TX

I absolutely LOVE cloth diapers! I started out with disposables for my son, but then he started getting horrible diaper rashes frequently. A family member recommended Blue Penguin diapers ( www.bluepenguin.biz) They are amazing! Its a smaller company, and the owner Carol is so incredibly nice. They have the sposaeasy diapers which is what I use, and its just as easy as disposables, if not easier and saves you so much money. My son loves being in his cloth diapers and I feel so much better about his tush being in something without chemicals. I used Fuzzi Bunz on my daughter for 14 months and loved them. At around 14 months, I had trouble keeping her dry enough and had lots of leaks, so used disposables at that point on. My niece also used Fuzzi Bunz on both her children. My husband even liked them, as they were so soft and easy to use. My daughter had very little rash when she was using cloth. My concerns are more about all the chemicals used in the making of disp. diapers and exposing our babies to them. I tried some other brands, but wasn't as thrilled. There's a lot of different KINDS of diapers. For instance, the fuzzi buns and new Bum Geniuses that are so popular are pocket diapers. The advantage is that you can stuff them to make them as absorbent as you like. The negative is that you have to stuff them before use or they have no absorbency at all. Then you have to shake loose or pull out the lining before washing.

Fitted (like MotherEase) or prefold diapers (the old fashioned kind) require covers so they are in two pieces, dry quickly don't have the hassle of stuffing, and last longer. If you get a good price on covers (which are worn several times before washing) then prefolds and covers are much cheaper then the other kinds of cloth diapers. The covers are air dried so they have a longer life then diapers you put in the dryer. If you take this route and the diaper has no velcro or other closure I recommend Snappis over diaper pins. Don't get the Gerber prefolds. Get Indian or Chinese. They are much more absorbant, especially the Indian cotton. Covers may come in velcro, snap, pull up (like the Gerber plastic pants) and wool or fleece.

There's also all in ones. My older Bum Genius are all in ones and I really like them. I have the Wonderworks all in one and by far this is my favorite diaper. My daughter is over 30 lbs and has worn these diapers since she was a few months old! Of all my one size diapers, these are the ONLY ONES that still fit her (aside from my toddler diapers, of course.) You can't beat 2 solid years of wear (and I bought them preowned which helped too!) I can't seem to find a one size all in one Wonderworks right now but if you do, it's wonderful!

It's better for their health (no diaper rash) better for the environment and saves you about $1000 per baby as they potty train about one year earlier. Recommend the book Natural Infant Hygiene by Ingrid Bauer. I keep diapers on my son in between, but I bet he'll be outta diapers by 18 mos. :)

The main reason I'd recommend cloth diapers is because they save you a lot of money!! I've read about people spending $3000-$5000 on disposables during the time their child was in diapers.
If you are washing them yourself, that will save you the most money (instead of using a diaper service).
The brand I use and LOVE is BumGenius 3.0. They are adjustable to fit 7pound to 35 pounds. They have a pocket to put the absorbent material in so as your baby grows (or sleeps longer) you can put more in the pocket. I got my first 12 off of craigslist for about $13/each. If you buy diapers off of Diapers.com, you get money off your first order. If you have a few friends that will order for you, then you can make a bunch of 'first' orders and save some money.

I definately would. My son is almost 6 months old and for the first 4 months I used disposables and a friend turned me on to cloth. I personally LOVE Tiny Tush Elite because they're one size fits all and you can do either velcrow or snaps; I personally do the snaps because when my son is rolling around on the floor the velcrow sticks to the carpet. Definately do your research first then decide; I just Googled "Cloth Diapers" and asked people on a parenting forum like this one. I also save a ton of money. Good luck.

Yes. I love using cloth, and have cloth diapered 3 children (I still have 2 in diapers). It's so much better for their skin (though you do have to change diapers more often than with disposables), better for the environment (both in the manufacture and disposal of paper diapers), and better on the pocket book (after the initial investment).

As for what kind, it depends on what you want. Are you wanting inexpensive? Then prefolds and covers (PUL and/or wool, but NOT plastic pants from Gerber!) are what you prefer. Easy? Bum Genius one size diapers are pretty popular and they grow with your child. I also like Happy Heiney's because they fit a little larger and therefore fit longer. I use Fuzzi Bunz, too, and like them. I also have many fitted diapers (require a cover) made by Work At Home Moms that I love. Then there is the new Gro Baby system, which is all together different. I wouldn't waste my money on Gdiapers, unless you get the G pant and use reusable liners. THe disposable liners are not very environmentally friendly and are uber expensive, from what i've heard.

Keep in mind that all babies are different, so what works for some may not work for others. Sometimes the best thing to do is to buy one of different kinds to see what you like. Places like www.clothdiapersuperstore.com and www.abbyslane.com are very good with having packages you can put together to "sample" different types. www.jilliansdrawers.com has a package that I believe you put $10 down on, and use for a month. You send them back if you don't like them or something. Also, many people buy used to try different kinds. Visit a place like Cloth Diaper Nation www.clothdiapernation.com or www.diaperswappers.com (though CDN is smaller and safer as far as buying from people) to talk with others about diapers and also for their For Sale or Trade sections, where you can buy used diapers to try.

Absolutely love my cloth diapers. I use Fuzzi Bunz pocket diapers. I have about 15 fuzzi bunz and a few extra inserts ("mother of eden" inserts are the best!). I toss them all in the wash every other day and hang them up to dry on a drying rack. My baby is dry and comfortable. I do also have disposables for travel and overnight. I'm doing a little something for the environment and saving a little money anyway.
I used a couple of Bum Genius but liked the snaps on the F.B. better. F.B. makes a one size diaper now, too. Just make sure the insert is flat when you place it in the diaper and change your baby a little more often or you might have leak issues. Also, your baby might have to wear a size up in onesies or other clothes because of the size of the cloth diaper. It's not much more work and I think it's worth it.

Yikes! as much as i would love saving 7,000.00 a year, im afraid i wouldnt want to deal with the mess! I bought a pack of gerber ones to use as burp rags and they were my favorite burpees ever! and when my daughter finally quit spitting up i started using them as dust rags equally awesome for that! 17 yrs ago, things were quite different. I just bought the plain old ones at Walmart!! I washed and folded them myself!! If you use the inserts, they are easier to dispose of waste.
I soaked them in a bucket in my garage with Dreft and clorox for 2-3 days to make a washer full and then ran the load. Traditional plastic cloth kept the urine from getting on everything.
The are cheaper and I think I was able to potty train easier since my daughter could feel the wetness more than in the diapers that soak it all up!! I would have used them again with my 2nd child but she was premmie and just could not get them to stay on her little bottom!!

With my first son (turning 2 in 2 weeks) I used the BumGenius one size diapers and LOVED them! I am expecting my 2nd child in a month and will definitely use them again. Added bonus--I don't have to buy any more as I already have them!

My husband was really skeptical about using cloth diapers at first and he ended up singing their praises as well. Cost is big upfront (I recommend having 15 - 18 total) but then you are done with buying (if you use the type that grow with the baby as we did). There were increased utilities because of increased laundry (every other day), but these were less than the cost of disposables. I can't believe how much I spend on diapers now that my son has outgrown his cloth ones!

The other thing I loved about them is that they give such a cute big behind to the baby! Absolutely adorable!

Do a little research on the different brands (BumGenius used to be the only ones that "grew" with the baby, but it sounds like that may not be true any more) and then find your best deal. You can even order them from Target now!
