Cloth Diapering? - Houston,TX

I want to this time around, I loved breastfeeding and the freedom it allowed me as a mother (and a consumer) Among other things.Cloth diapering would be SO COOL. I hate being a slave to those awful, stinky, expensive things.

What kind did you use? What style did you hate? Are there kinds that work as well as disposable?, is there a hybrid?

.The expense at first isn't a problem, ill get the good kind and a lot of them. I figure it will still save me money and time in the long run.

What can I do next?

Love, love, love my GroVia hybrids. Super easy to use and wash, even the grandparents have no problem (and they thought I was crazy for using cloth) and they work way better than disposables, almost no blowouts. I almost always use them with the washable soaker pads, but it is nice to have the disposable around if you need them. I really liked that you could reuse the shells and just change the soakers if they were just wet or the mess was well-contained. This cuts down on what you have to wash and how many shells you need. I ordered mine from Costco.com at first, they have a package thing that is really reasonably priced.

My best and cheapest diapers were chinese prefolds with prowrap covers - NEVER had a leak and I would reccommend these with a newborn with their runny poop.
As my second got older I found some fuzzibunz second hand and LOVED them! I had a fuzzibunz for my son, but it always leaked, I think he was too young (runny poops) and maybe it was just a lemon.
Beware of cloth diapering.... it is addictive, and all the different styles and prints are SO cute, you may end up spending more than you plan :)

I did cloth diapers with both my babies and loved it. (I always used disposables if we were going to be out for very long.)
Whoever said cloth diapering is addictive was totally right. I tried a lot of different styles and brands. In the end, the easiest and most effective was a chianese prefold with a snappi fastener and a prowrap cover. I don't think I ever had one leak. It was just easy.

So if you're getting your feet wet, start there. Have fun!

I used a G-Daiper and loved them. The outside is washable with these inserts that you flush (although I threw them away but they are supposed to break down really quickly). I really liked them and the severed their purpose well until about 1.5 and we switched to disposable because they just were not protecting well. Perhaps they have been improved in the last 2 years?

We bought Gro-Baby (now Gro-via) for my older one. I liked that I could re-use the shell and switch out the liner. My younger one didn't like those so we invested in Bum Genius the second time around. We use the GroBabys during the day and the BumGenius for night time for both kids now. If I were to buy them again, I'd probably stick with BG, but their Flip system is similar to G-Diaper/Gro-Via, where you switch out the liner, and there's something wonderful about that. You don't feel like you're burning through your stash as fast.

Honestly maybe its my frugality talking but I prefer prefolds and Prowraps covers for day and now that my baby is sleeping longer--Mother-ease Sandy's diaper line for night (with a hemp insert for absorbency and microfiber for dryness) No leaks at night yet. Prowraps are cheap, white PLU covers with double gussets so even when there is poo spillover on the cover is almost never messes up her clothes. Good luck!

I liked both Bum Genius Organic and Thirsties. The Thirsties size medium worked awesome for my son until he was about 18 months. I then switched to Bum Genius. Their AIO is good, but I really preferred their Organic AIO. It washed and dried much more easily and quickly.

I used fuzzi bunz and loved them. They are very cute, and are very similar to changing a disposable diaper.

I used Fuzzi Bunz for my daughter, now 7 for about 14 months, but then couldn't keep her dry enough. I'm re -using them for my son, now 7 months, so I feel like I'm getting my money out of them. I tried other styles and I think it comes down to what works best for your child's body type. Some covers just fit better than others. I like that Fuzzi Bunz stay dry next to baby's skin, whereas some of the cotton diapers used with covers, get wet and baby is uncomfortable IMMEDIATELY - so you are changing diapers more often. I use disposables if I'm out and about all day because I don't want to carry around dirty diapers. There are so many alternatives, my friend likes Bum Genius and I have one to try out, so we'll see.

while trying to find the blog where i read that by the time you spend money on washing (electric, water, soap) your really not saving anything but it is an enviromently friendly. i found baby on a budget at http://pregnantchicken.squarespace.com/ the tip was "Babies fly through clothes in their first year and parents often overbuy in the beginning so you can find some barely worn duds at almost all second hand and consignment stores or buy them as lots online."

We use BumGenius 3.0's & 4.0's (4.0 is the newest version, have 3.0's from our 4yr old). They are one-size. We started with prefolds and covers (with snappi's to hold the prefold together) with our 4yr old when he was around 10mo. Tried FuzziBunz, didn't really like them. Love the BG. Prefold was the cheapest way to go to startt out. We use flushable liners to catch the poop once on solids (our baby is 6mo so we are using them now). We use disposables at night. Used Pampers with our oldest, but when they changed what they were made with I decied to go with SeventhGeneration and we have no problems with those. We used Pampers sensitive and huggies naturals in the beginning with the baby before he could fit the cloth. I love using cloth. I wash about every 3days and have no problems with that schedule. It can be expensive at first, but we bought new prefolds and covers and used pocket diapers (fuzzibunz) initially with our oldest. Then when pregnant with the baby, we bought new bumgenius as they went on sale. Congrats and hope you love cloth too!
