Cheap, Healthy Snacks

I am looking for cheap healthy snacks/snack ideas. I noticed when I went to the market today, health food is so expensive. I am not a "organic" person, but I am trying to loose weight and I am getting tired of the same snacks and meals all the time. I love sweets so if anyone has guilt free sweet ideas, let me know.

Hi S.,

The only thing that I can recommend, which isn't perfect, is a cookbook that I have called "Deceptively Delicious" written by J. Seinfield. She has some desserts in there that look pretty good, but are made with veggies. I got the book at Walmart. Hope it helps.

Freeze some seedless grapes. The kids will probably love them too. My son calls them grapesicles.
Baby carrots and dill dip.
The commissary normally has small pickling cucumbers that I like.
Apples sliced up with cinnamon on them.

I found that if I get a bunch of fruit and prep it up (like slicing up melons and such) that I was more likely to snack on it that sweets.

Fruit, fruit, fruit... of any kind, and organic. Yes, it's a little more expensive, but the benefits in your health will be well worth it!

As a non-perishable, and insulin balanced alternative, trail mixes with a blend of nuts and dried fruit. You really don't eat a whole of it because it's so satisfying. If you think about the alternative - popcorn, chips, or cookies - you would eat 2-3x more just to get the same satisfaction from a handful of trail mix.

Hey lady! One healthy snack that I make for myself that helps to shave off the pounds, is a yogurt smoothie. I personally am not fond of yogurt, so I'll get plain dannon yogurt, some ice and bananss or strawberries and blend them in. To give it a sweet taste, I'll put some honey in it or sugar. I'll put it in one of those plastic containers that I get a drink in from the carryout, stick a straw in it and drink it on the go.

It helps me to have "breakfast" which I normally miss on a daily basis, helps flush the digestive system and helps me lose weight.

Good luck!

Hi S.,
I married a sailor as well (22 years ago) he retired after 26. Gotta love the uniform!! I lost 50 pounds a few years ago and I drink at leat 4 bottle of waters a day. Add some Crystal Light for a fruity drink. I also eat a lot of salad, boring yes, but Sams club has the huge bag of spring greens for $4.88 and that's cheaper than the commissary. I buy Sams Club rotisserie chickens for $4.97 and go home and take all the meat off the bone and cut it up and put in a ziploc bag and add to my salad as needed. I like apples and peanut butter for a snack as some one else had suggested. I freeze cut up fruit for smoothies. Look around and you can buy pineapples (whole) for a couple dollars on sale. Check out your local Shoppers. I bought the quart size today for $1.88 each. Skinny Cow (I think that's the name) has really low cal fudgecicles. yumm. I'm not into organic and it is expensive and besides no one can tell the difference. I've served both to my family and no one noticed. Good luck!

For snacks, I pair up a complex carb with some protein. So here are some pairs that are typical: apple/handful of almonds, grapes/cottage cheese, banana/peanut butter, carrots & celery/hummus, protein smoothie (skim milk, protein powder, fruit). We eat every 3 hours or so. HTH!

Here's pretty typical for meals:
Breakfast - Eggs/Whole Wheat Toast, Smoothie, Yogurt/Fruit/Almonds, Healthy muffins/Eggs

Lunch - Leftovers, Salad with grilled chicken, sandwich on whole wheat bread, "Snack Lunch" - veggies/hummus/cheese/fruit

Dinner - Soup/Salad, a meat (chicken/fish/lean beef), a veggie, and a complex carb (brown rice, sweet potato, quinoa, etc.), whole wheat pasta with marinara sauce with ground turkey

BTW, I am a mom of 6 kiddoes who range in age from 8yo to 15yo.

As someone who lost 40 lbs. two years ago, I have to join the chorus of those singing "fruit, fruit, fruit"! I'm extremely partial to berries. Not only are they sweet and low calorie, but they have so many health benefits. For an added treat, some light whipped cream is only 20 calories per serving (2 tbsn.). Melon is yummy, too.
I'm also a big fan of rice cakes, and the caramel and chocolate flavored ones are very satisfying to a sweet tooth (but only one per snack please!). When the craving really hits me, a fat-free Fudgesicle is only 60 calories!
The trick is to be able to satisfy yourself with a small portion of whatever so the daily calories do not add up to more than you can burn off! The more wholesome and low cal (like fruit and veggies), the more you can eat, the more you will fill up!

Don't know if you like yougurt - but all of those flavored yogurts get a little expensive sometimes. We buy a large container of yogurt. Then we buy several flavors of low sugar jams, black cherry, trawberry, blueberry, etc. THen, you can mix whatever flavor you want at the time by adding a teaspoon or so to your yogurt. It is a lot less expensive to get the large unflavored yogurts than it is to stock up on 4 different flavors. Great for dipping apples in too, or chop up bananas or peaches and toss in.

Take grahm crackers and put a spoonful of fat free cool whip on top. Then top with another grahm cracker (make a sandwich)
Put on a cookie sheet and freeze. Once frozen you can put them in a zip lock storage back (keep in your freezer) and you have a pretty tasty guilt free snack.

Hope this helps!

My husband has been following the Michael Thurmond eating/excerise plan (remember him from Extreme Makeover-the diet and exercise guy?). The weight is falling off unbelievably and he eats every 2-3 hrs! One of the snacks is awesome and simple. Basically, you take a few very ripe bananas and vanilla rice milk. Blend together and place in freezer. Trust me....even my daughter wants it for breakfast! He adds a bit of nutmeg and/or pumpkin spice and it's yummy. Good luck! (p.s. the MT diet thing is basically chicken, turkey and fish; white rice (jasmine rice is fantastic) or plain baked potatoe; and veggies and fruit; eat every 2-3 hrs.; but the specifics depend on your determined "body type".)

I love to have rice cakes with peanut butter and honey! My 3 year old likes that one, too. I like sweets, too, so I take a product called CarbEase before most heavy carb meals/snacks; it blocks 80% of the carbs so they don't turn into fat! A good ratio to look for in snacks is 10g protein and 30g or less for carbs. Cottage cheese is a great one because it has 12g protein per serving. The protein helps to feed lean muscle which in turn strips body fat! Hope that helps!

Hi S.
I found that the best snack for me who also loves sweets is sugar-free pudding and jello w/just a little whipped topping(kool whip). Also if you feel you are craving and the pudding or jello just isn't something you want right then eating a banana will curve the sweet craving. I also like eating string cheese. I hope this helps. Hey there, I know how you feel. I got tired of eating the same foods all the time too. I love having grapes with cool whip and some times I put some cinnamon in it and that is good too. Sugar free jello with a sppon full of cool whip, also I love the chip ahoy 100 pack shancks!!

Now I also eat a Attain bar for lunch and before I work out I eat an access bar. These are like little candy bars. I really like them.

I also drink water when I get hungry before it is time for me to eat. I love the crystal light energy drink. That is tasty and gives you that extra energy you need every once in a while. I hope these help. I am too trying to loose some pounds. So if I can help with anything else or you find out any other good tips let me know.

Help this helps.

Thanks, J.

Hi S.!
First off my hats off to you for being a military spouse! (nothing like a man in uniform :)). My husband was in the Navy years ago, before the war. As far as a decent snack, I found this chocolate dip @ Giant that's low fat & I partially dip strawberries in it & it hardens like the old "magic shell" for ice cream. IF you drain pineapple & dry it off a little & dip it in the chocolate that's really good too. It's not fat free but it's reduced & mmmmmm is it good.
Good luck to you & yours.

I've recently rediscovered natural peanut butter on 1/2 apple. It satisfies my cravings for sweet, salty, and crunchy all at once!

I've also found that drinking hot tea cuts off my sweets craving. I think it's b/c tea is alkaline.

Apple slices with a tablespoon of peanut butter for dipping. Toast with peanut butter and banana slices. If you can find "flatout" wraps in the bakery section of your grocery store, they're very good with a little peanut butter or "nutella" chocolate spread and bananas, then roll it up and make a wrap. I also make these little non-bake "cookies", even our children love them. They are also made with nut butter. I have used cashew butter or almond butter mixed with a little wheat germ and flax seed meal, then just make them into balls and roll in coconut. Keep refrigerated. I'm also a fan of protein bars. I think the luna bars are pretty good. Even my husband likes them. I'm kind of a health nut and am presently training for a marathon. Very much into the health scene. Hope you like nut butters. Also thank to your brave husband for his service. We pray for our military every day. It would not be the land of the free if it were not also the home of the brave. God bless.

Fruit that is in season isn't that expensive. Try grapes and apples to start with then add try different as they come into season. Also Quaker has come out with Mini Delights if you want to add chocolate, peanut butter or carmel at 90 calories a bag.
