Hi there,

A friend just gave me a huge bag of beautiful, high quality children's clothing. My daughter won't fit in to these clothes for at least 3 or 4 years. I want to keep them because they are beautiful, as crazy as that seems, so I'm wondering if any moms have tips on the best way to store the clothing? I was thinking those vaccum sealed bags but I'm not sure...

Thanks!

What can I do next?

I have had my daughter's clothes in rubbermaid tubs for four years and they look great. They should be fine in the tub as long as there not in a damp basement. I do have a friend that uses the vaccum seal bags and LOVES them!

I use the rubbermaid storage totes... And have them labeled on shelves in the basement. I've been useing this method since my kids (9, 6,3, inutero) were little. So I have boy and girl totes labled by sizes. :-) Vacuum sealed bags would be too easy for a mouse to puncture and turn into a nest.

I use the Space Bags for a ton of stuff like storing some clothes and comforters. We have not had mice for years now since we put the cat box in the basement : ). But I also used them then and never a problem with them. That said, I also use the Rubbermaid boxes. I like the new latch type covers they have now because they really stay secure. The only problem I have had with the storage containers is that silverfish and other tiny bugs can still get inside. My stuff is kept in the basement so that is always down there.

My family goes snow skiing once a year. Each skier has his/her own Space Bag for the clothing items that we only wear for skiing. They have done great for... 7 years now I think? After last year, my mom threw in a dryer sheet to try to help with any musty smells.

Since we don't know if we're having more kids, I've kept all their clothes until we know for sure. They're all in plastic totes in our basement. Some are in plastic bags as well to protect them further.

I was sorting through some of them that have been in there for a few years last week - all look great. I'd just be certain to launder them before putting them in a container and then again before wearing. Sounds crazy to be redundant, but you never know what microscopic organisms may be on them when you put them into a cold, dark location.

Good luck.
