Monday is going t be the first day of the Atkins Diet for me and my partner. We have both had success on it in the past. I actually lost 50 pounds before I got pregnant with my daughter. But I am not looking forward to eggs for breakfast anymore. We both definitely have to lose some weight and I love the results but anyone have any good easy recipes? MY Doc suggested the Southbeach but I am more familiar with Atkins. I could definitely use some support.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks to all of you for your advice/suggestions. Today is day 5 and I really feel great. So I know it's working. I am going to research the Southbeach-from what I have seen so far, most of the foods are pretty low carb so the switch may not be that bad and then eventually go to a low calorie/portion control diet. I have been walking at least 3 nights a weeks with the kids plus the normal running around the house after them until I drop nightly. I will keep you posted in a couple of weeks. Gotta go fill my water up again!

I also did Atkins. I lost about 40lbs in 4 months! When I finally hit my goal and slightly increased my carb intake to 30grams a day I instantly starting gaining back! I gained back 60lbs! So.. one of my best friends, who is an OB/GYN, told me I need to do Weight Watchers. It costs about $40 a month - but you'll save that money not buying all the steaks you would eat on Atkins :) Anyhow, the weight is coming off - definetly slower than Atkins but I am down 15lbs in about 3 1/2 months. And the best part is that I didn't have to cut out anything I love to eat - I just eat less of it! Good luck!

If you have diabetic tendencies (sugar problems), I disagree with the rest... Atkin's rocks. I think Atkin's gets a bad rap from a bunch of people who have never actually read the book. My husband (a pre-diabetic) has been on Atkins and Atkins for Life for 5 years. During that time he has lost weight, his cholesterol went from 375 to 189... WITHOUT DRUGS!!!! This is odd but he has far less gas when he is religious to the diet. I can go on and on. For some people Atkins is the absolute best thing they can do for their health.

If you are tired of eggs for breakfast can I suggest a move away from breakfast food all together.

How about a salad with chicken cubes, bacon, and sliced almonds on top?

Or maybe a low carb wrap with meat, lettuce, ranch, and franks hot sauce:D

Southbeach is much much more healthy for you. I can't help with diets, but I do know that based on the facts its healthier. Its based on ALMOST the same concept but is much more of a balanced diet and suggesting good carbs. I would highly suggest to go with what your doc says.

I did atkins. I lost 65lbs in 4 months. Today, I weigh 30lbs. more than I did when I started the darn diet. It has great results, but unless you plan on doing it for a lifetime, you'll never keep it off. I say, eat healthy and exercise. Yes it takes longer for the weight to come off, but the effects are long term. You would be suprised what weight watchers could do for you.

Hi T. ~

First of all I am not familar with southbeach. But in regards to the adkins diet here is my opinion. First of all when the man that created the adkin diet passed away Do you know of all the health problems he had ? Makes me worried about following any diet he created. Second, I personally do not think that cutting almost every carb from your diet is healthy. Some people do not realize exactly how many carbs they consume in a day, and then to go completely to almost nothing, scares me. I lost 60 pounds after my son was born and this is how i did it ( this is just my opinion and im not a doctor) but for one whole week I wrote down everything I put in my mouth and I measured it all out. I also wrote down the amount of carbs that were in it, calories and sodium (watching your salt is important due to heart disease and blood pressure) Then I slowly cut down on each of them, watching what I ate, eating portions and writing it all down, so lets say today I ate 400 carbs tomorrow I only ate 375 or 350.. ( and when you are start adding your carbs you would be surprised how many you consume without thinking about it) I lost 60 pounds in 6 weeks and I didnt starve myself, and I exercised every other day. And I didnt even stop eating things that I liked, if I wanted potato chips and dip I ate it, but I measured the amount of dip and recorded the calories ect and I counted out the number of chips per serving. I know it may sound like a pain but it really wasnt. I even found a website that would tell you how many calories, sodium ect is in a whopper jr, so if I went to lunch I could record that as well. If you or anyone else wants that website send me a note I would be glad to send it. Sorry this is so long.

The true Atkins Diet is VERY BAD FOR YOU. It is almost all meat, which does not have the approriate nutritional content for all your daily needs. It is true, Dr Atkins died of cardiovascular complications - he had a major coronary event. Protein alone is not a good thing. Another serious problem with eating so much meat and protein is that it can cause kidney failure. Think about going three times a week every week to be dialyzed for 3-4 hours each time. Does this sound like a happy alternative to being thin?

I agree with your doctor. The Southbeach diet provides a nutrionally balanced diet. Another good option is Weight Watchers. Weight Watchers actually teaches you good eating habits, and this is truely the key to losing weight and keeping it off. You need to change your dietary habits and start excercising. It sounds so cliche' but it truely is the best way to control your weight - eat well and excercise.

Nothing can be changed overnight - nor should it if you want it to stick. Start slowly, but have a plan. The best thing to do is to start cutting out the junk from your diet - cookies, cakes, ice cream, candy, pop (even diet pop can be bad for you if it has phosphoric acid and caffiene in it), chips, snack bars (yes, these may say they are good for you but can be loaded with sugar and calories). This is easiest to do at the grocery store - don't shop hungry and really think twice before buying junk. I'm not saying you can never eat it again, just make it a speacial treat on rare occasions (not the special treat each day). The best way to grocery shop is to stay on the perimeter of the store, that's where the bakery, produce, meat and dairy are located. Try to limit the amounts of prepared food that you buy and eat. These are LOADED with salt and preservatives - even those Lean Cuisine and Weight Watchers meals that so many people buy to help them lose weight. A high salt diet will lead to hypertension and then subsequent cardiovascular and kidney problems. Read the labels on these prepared foods and keep track of how much salt you are eating.

Oh yes, and another good reason not to eat or serve prepared foods to your children is that there are scientific studies that suggest the real culprit in the increase in autism in children is not due to vaccinations, but linked to diet. The same chemicals that people claim cause autism in vaccines are the same ones that were there when we all got them as children - but we got them in higher amounts! The increase in artificial colors and flavorings, preservatives, and chemicals in foods may be to blame. This may also be the main cause in the increase in ADHD seen in children as well. When they put children on healthy diets, they find many of their behavioral problems decrease.

Start slowly by replacing sweet things with fruit. Many fruits are just as sweet as candy, cookies and cakes. Replace salty snacks with nuts that have protein in them. Start drinking more water - replace one can of diet coke with a glass of water each week until you stop drinking pop except on rare occasions. Water will fill you up and will make your skin, hair and nails healthier. They make flavored water if you just need to have some flovor, or add a slice of lemon or lime to the water. If you are in need of bubbles, club soda with lime or lemon is a better alternative. Soda that contains phosphoric acid (colas) will deplete your bones of calcium and high amounts of phosphate in the diet can lead to other kidney related problems. Replace white breads and pastas with whole grain breads and pastas which have a lower glycemic value and will take longer to digest - you will feel fuller. Fill up on salads and vegetables for dinner - eat these off your plate first and then move onto the breads and main dish, you might find you eat less because you will be fuller. Eat SLOWLY. I know this is a hard thing to do in our go, go, go world we live in, but if you take a little more time to eat, you might realize you are full before you overeat.

Sorry this is not the magic bullet answer, but hopefully this advice will be helpful to you and others. Good luck!

I have been on southbeach, it worked well for awhile. As soon as I add carbs to my diet I gain weight back. What I found that has worked for my husband and myself is Weight Watchers. To me it is more practicable. Portion control is key. I find that when I write everything down and measure I am successful. You can eat just about anything and you don't feel like you are depriving yourself. Eating right is a lifelong journey and something I have struggled with my whole life. We didn't gain the weight overnight and we won't lose it that fast either! Also, a book that I love is YOU On A Diet-The Owner's Manual for Waist Management by Michael Roizen M.D.and Mehmet Oz M.D. It is fun to read and has very interesting facts. They have been on Oprah and Dr. Roizen has a presentation that was on PBS not too long ago. He is funny! Best of luck to the both of you!

I totaly recomend Southbeach over Atkins. It is more healthy and easier to stay on long term. When I was on it I joined southbeach on line. I think it was around $15 or $20 a month. But you can find TONS of recipies on line, there is a board just for people to exchange recipies, advise for all kinds of situations, guides to eating out, even at fast food places, a place to chart your success, etc. It was well worth it for the 6 month I was on the diet.

I hate atkins. I think the long term affects on your body are yet to be found! I would say if you had a choice try wieght watchers- I tell you what it works and you can eat whatever you want if you keep it in your points allowed per day.
