At What Age Did You Cut Your Son Hair?

My son is 22 months old and has long hair like a girl. Older people keep telling me not to cut it because I'm not supposed to cut it until he can talk or turn 2 years old. I have all girls and I have never heard of such a thing as this. I am tired of combing hair. I feel like I have another girl. I know that he cant do the clippers because his head is still soft. But whats wrong with scissor cut or cutting it low with the clippers?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone, I've decided to let my hubby take him to the barber shop. But when I said head soft..I didnt mean that his skull or anything is soft, I meant that he cant get lined up around the edges because those areas around the neck ears and front hairline are still soft like baby skin and not ready for that yet.

My son also had a full head of thick hair when he was born. I started cutting it around 8 months to keep it out of his eyes, and gave him his first all over cut (using a clippers) just before his 1st birthday. Now that he is 4, we cut it about every 6 weeks. It grows very fast, and he is always complaining that he is sweaty.

I cut my son's hair for the first time when he was only about 6 or 7 months old because it was so long it was covering his eyes. I only cut his bangs for a while, but the last haircut I had them cut all around. (He is 15 months now). I suggest finding a place that specializes with children.

If you want it cut, just get it cut - I've never heard of waiting until a certain age or when a certain milestone is achieved. What does that have to do with anything? Sounds like a old wives tale to me.

Uh, what??? I think everyone needs a little physiology and anatomy lesson. Head is soft?? At almost 2? What does hair cutting have to do with talking? With the summer coming, why would you want your son running around with a head full of sweaty hair? If you think it looks bad it probably does. Cut it.

My son was about 10 months when we cut it. I don't like long hair on boys. By long, I mean past the earlobes.

I don't know where those stories came from, but it made for a little chuckle this morning. I'd been told it was bad "luck" to cut hair before 1. I'd not heard that a child needs to be 2 or be able to talk. WHY? That's stupid. And clippers because his head is soft.......would only apply if you're going to do a military buzz cut and shave it all off! Otherwise, it's not even touching his head (or neck either). The ONLY reason I can figure for those silly tales you've been fed is that some babies fuss or cry so the theory is that if they wait until the baby is old enough to sit down and be quiet, it'd be easier. I personally think it'd be harder. The longer you wait, the bigger the "event".

My brother was right at 1 when he got his hair cut. My oldest son has hair like me (lots of it) and got his hair cut around his first birthday. Not for "luck" but because we wanted to take some pictures of him with his "shaggy" (not really long) hair, and then his first haircut on his first birthday. My husband took him to a real barber (he says the barber is a "man thing"), saved a clipping of hair, and the barber even gave them a cute certificate that he'd graduated "babyhood". We took a few pictures, too, because we're nerds like that. For my youngest son, he had almost no hair at 1. He got his hair cut at almost 2 just because there wasn't enough to cut until then (high high hair line, and very faint red hair until then). They both did just fine. They got scissor cuts, and also got the clippers on their necks and right by their ears to clean it up nicely. All they did was get big eyes and the youngest was more shy and timid, and tensed his shoulders and looked at me like "What???" and I just held his hands and said it's ok, he's a big boy, etc. His lower lip stuck out and he looked like he was going to cry, but I just talked him through it. No problems.

I cut my son's hair when it got long enough that I didn't feel it looked cute anymore, just raggedy. I don't remember his exact age - close to two, but not quite two, I think.

But I think it's silly not to cut it because other people told you not to. I cut my daughter's hair (18-months) last month because her bangs were so long they hung down to her mouth. I had to put them up every day to keep them out of her eyes, and any time she had a runny nose, well, I won't gross you out with the details. A couple people were shocked I cut her hair (because now I can't put it up in a cute pig-tail anymore) but it made my life easier, and she still looks darling. If you think your son is being mistaken for a girl and you don't like it, cut his hair. There is no magic number when it goes from being wrong to being right.

My son was growing a natural mullet, so I cut the back and the long curls off the back, when he was about 18 months. I wanted to wait till he was 2, but he looked kind of goofy to me. I was both happy and sad that I'd done it (you can't ever go back, you know. :) So I recommend taking before & after pics. Might be symbolic to do it as Easter if you celebrate Easter.

I'm still cutting it (he's 3+ now). Though sometimes it turns out better than others. When he was that young, I did it while he was sleeping or did a quick snip while he was distracted (TV works well for this, in his case anyway, or it did until recently).

My last baby had his first hair cut at 2 months (it was long and thick from birth). My daughter had her bangs cut at 3 months. The older two were about 5 months. All cuts were done with clippers.

I've heard of people doing the random 1 year thing....but i've never heard of 2 years or talking.

I cut my older son's hair when he was 6 months. My SIL offered to use the clippers, but I didn't want his hair that short. Both my sons were blessed with lots of hair at birth, so I really didn't feel I had the option of waiting much longer than 6 months for that first hair cut.

There's no reason you can't cut his hair. Never heard of waiting until he can talk or is 2 years old. Cut away! You're not going to hurt his soft spot, even if you use clippers up close. He'll be fine!!!

We cut our son's when it got long (unrelated to any other life event) - probably about 9-10 months and he just got his second cut at 13 months.

I'm sure you meant your grandparents, but what my mind thought was "Are these just random old people on the street? Leaning on their walkers at the corner - they shout as you pass - Pssst...hey. You with the kid. You're not thinking of going to that barber shop, are ya. Can't cut a boy's hair until he talks."

And then there's a short old joe pesci lookalike that sounds like Beavis saying "yeah, yeah...no haircuts. Or until they turn 2. Yeah yeah.."

My son had his first haircut when he was 13 months old. His hair kept itching him, and I couldn't stand seeing him scratch his neck. I used scissors to cut his hair. Make sure you use scissors that are specifically for hair cutting. I got mine at Babies R Us. I also bought a pair of texturing scissors at the same time. I am not a hairdresser, but this is what worked for me. I cut his hair until he turned 4 years old and his hair got thicker. It was trial and error at first but after a few hair cuts I wrote down a six step plan for when I cut my son's hair. This is what helped me.
1. Remember what has and has not worked in the past. Prevent a huge mess and as much stress as possible by following your plan.
2. Cut your child's hair as soon as he looks like he needs a haircut. Don't wait. The reason- short attention span and tolerance to sit still!
3. Time: At night before bath. Don't let your child get too tired. Bath can be a little earlier on haircutting day.
4. When weather temperatures permit, it is best to cut your child's hair with him only wearing his diaper(underwear). I would also try to get a haircutting cape, but he may not want to wear it until he gets a little older. My son wouldn't wear the cape until he was 2 and half. Once he wore the cape, I used a small towel under the cape so the velcro didn't scratch his neck. Remember it is a pain to remove cut hair from clothing. I also wore an old apron to cover my clothes when I cut my son's hair.
5. Scissors: (A hairdresser doesn't use this order, but the results looked better this way for me.) I started cutting his hair using the texturing scissors. I cut my son's hair as short as we wanted it depending on the season. After I had his hair the length we wanted, I used the regular scissors to clean up the few hairs that were too long. Since I am not a hairdresser reversing the order of the scissors made the mistakes I made less noticable.
6. Have a small dry washcloth close at hand to wipe away any hair that gets on your child's face. Keep the vaccuum nearby to remove hair from the floor. Hair on the floor is very slippery! Use a lent roller to remove any hair from clothing.
When my son was younger I could put his favorite toy on his high chair and he would play with that while I cut his hair. Make sure that whatever toy you have him play with is easy to clean up after just in case hairs get into it. As my son got older, I let him watch a video during his hair cut, but there is one big drawback to using a video. When you need to cut the hair on the back of his neck, your son must look down. He won't want to look down if he is watching a video, and you will need to put the video on pause. If stopping the video could result in a tantrum, I would recommend using a toy instead. I also recommend cutting his hair in the same order every time. It makes it faster for you to cut his hair and he will also know what to expect each time. Makes it less frightening for the child if there is a pattern each time. I did top of head, bangs, above right ear, above left ear, back, and neck in that order every time.
I have never heard of the superstition to not cut hair until the child can talk or is two. I have a Chinese friend who told me that every child gets their head shaved on their first birthday in China. So, in my opinion, if you think your son needs a haircut, go for it! It is challenging to cut someone's hair when that someone is moving. Best luck!

I waited until my oldest was three-he had adorable ringlets but now its all straight. I didn't want to cut the curls! Then with my second two I waited until they were two. They didn't have the ringlets but it was wavy and adorable and babyish. It was like them turning into toddlers by cutting their hair.

All three were confused as girls here or there but I don't care. Its become a tradition to wait until two for us but no other reason.

I cut my boys' hair after their 1st Bday. Until then I kept fluff and locks because there were still "babies." After 1 they got a big boy look. But it is just personal preference. If you are tired of fighting the brushing, or tired of the look, then cut! Right now you have control. Once they gain their own opinions it is harder. Ask anyone with a middle schooler or teenager. :)

My son was born with a full head of hair, but after loosing a battle to cradle cap, it was very thin at around 4 months old. We just let it grow until it was messy looking and in his eyes. We were trying to wait until he was 13 months because we would be visiting family out of state and his great grandpa is a barber, but it got so bad we cut it right after he turned 1. We took him to a shop and had them do it the first time to get a shape built into it, and have been doing the upkeep ourselves.

We have a friend who just shaved his sons hair with the clippers at 14 months old. We are a military family and it is very common to have little ones with VERY short hair (just like daddy) and also for people to let the kids hair grow until the parent can't take it any more. It is really your choice!

Just a little warning- Once you cut his hair, he will not look like your little baby anymore :( He will have transformed into a little boy and it might pull on your heartstrings a little. Be prepared!

Friends of ours are Orthodox Jews and they aren't cutting their son's hair until he's three. Honestly he looks like a little girl with tons of curly long hair. It's gorgeous but very feminizing. Otherwise I am not familiar with any other customs regarding haircuts and babies although a Google search provided an interesting array.

We recently trimmed our son's hair and he's almost 15 months old. He didn't have much hair at birth and it was slow to grow. We waited until his hair grew over his ears. When it did, my husband grabbed a pair of scissors and trimmed as necessary. Good luck.
