VBS again! so little kids will be gluing felt shapes onto canvas bags and older kids will be both stitching and gluing fabric (stitching a felt pocket onto a canvas bag). I need to determine which age ranges will be stitching and since mine are so little I don't have a good idea what age that should be. I'm thinking 7? Thoughts? I'm not going to force anyone to stitch, they can choose to glue if they want, but my mother taught me to stitch when I was 5 or 6 so I would have liked the challenge. the classes are by age from 2-12

My daughter learned to hand sew stitches at 7.
By then, the fine motor coordination... is more coordinated. And they have more patience.
Sure some can learn earlier... but it depends.
This really depends on the child and their developmental stage. Some 5 year olds will be able to stitch easily. Others may not have developed these fine motor skills and it will be extremely difficult for them.
I would agree with age 7.
Seven sounds about right. My nine year old is a pretty good little seamstress and she loves sewing.
We use big needles, felt and embroidery thread. With the thick thread and bright colors you can really see the stitches which looks really cute. She just made a little clutch purse for her sister's 8th grade grad gift and I'm impressed.

If you use large needles that will be easy to hold, then it might be OK for the 5 year olds. Since they'll be sewing through canvas, I guess you can't use blunt plastic needles. Otherwise it would be similar to the lacing shape activities or stringing noodles on a necklace. The parts they may have trouble with are the pattern of going up and down, remembering to pull all the yarn through before taking the next stitch, and tying the knot at the end.
I learned to cross stitch when I was 6 and regular sewing at 7.
