We found out this weekend that we are expecting baby #2. As with the first baby, my preganncy tests were positive when I first took them and from the date of my last perios I am almost 8 weeks pregnant. I know everyone says that with the second you get bigger faster, but what exactly does that mean? I have quite the belly already and can't button my pants. I had a c-section with my first and I am not sure if that makes any difference either. I just need reassurance that I am not going to be a huge cow by the end of this!!!! Thanks!

What can I do next?

I just had my third baby, and I to was in maternity clothes before my second trimester. Have hope though, this baby I was smaller than my other two. I only gained thirty lbs this time. Compared to 50 and 40 the other two times. And now my son is six weeks and I'm only one size larger than before the pregnancy.

Sooo normal. The growth slows down though, so don't worry. You won't be overly huge. I thought I was having twins with the second. A friend of mine thought the same thing.

The same happened to me. I had a 11 mo old when I found out I was pregnant. At my first doctors visit (around 8 weeks) my doctor did a ultrasound since I was spotting a little. The girl doing the ultrasound asked if I was sure about how far along we were. I was postive. Then she said "that's why you're bigger. Look...TWINS!!!). I thought for sure my husband was going to drop my daughter and I'm glad I was lying down. It was a HUGE surprise but we wouldn't change it for the world. This might be something to talk to your doctor about when you have your first visit.
Good Luck!

Well first off CONGRATS!! Overall you are not going to be bigger, well as long as you don'g eat a ton of bad stuff, but at first you are going to be bigger faster. Your skin and body have already streched so it doesn't need to work to do that again. Don't worry! I had a c-section with all 3 of my children and I gained much more weight with my first.
Goodluck and enjoy!

Could also be twins!

I'm 35 weeks now and didn't start showing (even that horrible in-between-you-just-look-fat stage) until 22-23 weeks. But each person is different!

Yep, you betya it's normal. Some women don't show early with their second and consecutive pregnancies, but there are those of us who show so very early. It's just your body going, "here we go again". Congrats on your second and may you have an easy pregnancy with no complications. God Bless.

Hi K.,

I was huge with my 2nd one too, started feeling her soon too. I lost most of it faster though. Your body can stretch easier once it's done it before I guess...
Anyway, make sure you eat healthy and the right things so you don't get a lot of fat that will be hard to loose, eat protein and fruit, if you gain weight, you know it is not fat! it will be mainly liquid what it's good comming the hot weather.
Congratulations by the way!

Congrats on the new addition and have no fear. With my second child I was in maternity clothes by 8 weeks because of a belly also. Have no fears, I had a very normal weight pregnancy with my second (I think I gained 22 pounds), it is just that your body tends to recongnize what is happening and reacts a whole lot faster the second time around. I promise...no cow, take a deep breathe and enjoy your second trip down pregnancy lane (haha). Good luck!!

Hey there K.!
Just to let you know, I was the size of 2 cows with my second pregnancy. My belly was 53 inches around at the belly button. It was insane. I was really tiny with my first. Some women just can't help it no matter what. I lost it pretty quick keeping up with 2 kiddos instead of one. Just enjoy your pregnancy and try to stay as healthy as possible. Congrats and Good luck!

yeah, they aren't lying...you get almost exponentially bigger with the second, lol! i sure did at first but then it all evened out. if you are truly concerned INSIST on a hormone test and ultrasound to rule out something called a hydidaform mole (spelling?) just to be super safe. and do yourself a favor and DO NOT GOOGLE what i just told you to check on. :) good luck!

Hi Kristi,

I want to start off by congradulating you and your family on your second baby! I myself have one child by c-section. He is 14 months old. I have alot of medical knowledge and maybe I can ease some of your concerns. First off, c-sections shouldn't make a difference other than you have the choice on how you would like to deliver. The reason you expand earlier on is because this pregnancy is like second nature for your body. The uterus has already expanded once so the muscles are more laxed than before, thus stretching easier. Since your body knows what to do, your milk may come in earlier as well. Basically everything you experienced during your first pregnancy may happen sooner this time around. This doesn't mean you will gain a ton of weight either. It just depends on you. Every pregnancy is different. If you eat right, get some exersize if your OB says it's ok you should be fine. Unfortun ately I have had two misscariges. With the first one I was only five weeks along and didn't gain any weight. With the second one I got to 4 months and gained twenty pounds. With my third pregnancy I only gained fifteen pounds. I ate right most of the time. I wasn't allowed to exersize because I was concidered a high risk. So just eating right helped me. I did have morning sickness the enire time, so that might be part of it too. I wish the best of luck for you and your family. I hope I have have beenof some help. Take care.

K., I can't assure you that you won't gain more weight this time, it's entirely possible. Mostly because stuff isn't quite as tight after the first one, ligaments that hold the uterous elongate, and so you might carry the 2nd baby lower. I personally felt as if I had an anvel wedged in my pelvis with the second baby, lol. I will stress that eating properly and cutting out wasteful calories (deserts) will help you with this emensely. Also regular excercise, even if it's just an evening walk around the block will help beat the pounds. I gained 60 lbs with my first child, and it took me a year to get it all off. I only gained 40 with my second child and I was able to get off all but 8 lbs of it. I am not talking about what happened when I had my son at the age of 32....LOL. Still, be encouraged that eating healthy and staying active goes along way toward not becoming a cow.
As far as showing this early, being your second, it's normal. Mentioning your concern at your next office visit might get you a sonogram to check the age of the baby, sometimes if your dates are off a bit, it makes a difference.

Don't worry. Yes, in many women pregnancies after the first they will "show" sooner, and your little boy isn't even a year and a half yet. That's pretty close together and your body was probably not completely back to "normal."
Getting big in the belly is just what happens to get a new little life into the world. Keep up good habits and relax about your belly getting big. Look at it as a beautiful process, not becoming a cow...Every pound, every stretch mark, every morning you wake up nausious is part of the wonderful process of bringing a baby into the world.
I have had four babies...The stretch marks, flab, etc. left over from those blessed events are badges of honor and I would take them all over again to have the children I have. It's all worth it.
Relax and enjoy your changing body and remember that these changes are because you're growing a baby that will soon give you many happy moments. Good luck and congratulations.

I was much bigger with my second pg; it looked like I was hiding a beach ball under my shirt instead of a basketball, heh. Things just stretch faster and easier with each pg. I didn't gain much more weight, either. And it could be twins, ya never know til heartbeats or ultrasounds.
Congrats!!!!

Everyone's body is different and every pregnancy is different. The goal, as stated by so many others is a beautiful, healthy baby and a healthy Mama. The amount of weight gain is not necessarily the difference. The pregnancy I gained the least weight with was my largest belly and largest baby (10 lb. 6 oz.!) --I only gained 18 lbs. I did not have pre-eclampsia or gestational diabetes either. In actuality, no one can reassure you that you will not be a huge cow by the end of this...besides, what you consider a "huge cow," may not be the same as some one else. Your body is specially designed to accommodate a growing child, so just have a thankful heart, relax and enjoy the growth of this 2nd child and your cutie you already have.

I am in about the middle of my second pregnancy. I had a similar experience. If it makes you feel any better it seemed to slow down. I am still not wearing maternity clothes and I am 18 weeks. I gained a bunch of weight the first 8 wks and now I am back to the normal gain.

I'm 8 months pregnant with my 2nd right now and I started showing pretty early . I did get bigger faster but not too bad. I know how you feel though because at the beginning when my clothes were already getting small I was thinking I would be HUGE by the end. But some of my old maternity clothes that I wore all the way until the end with my first are already too small now. It's kind of weird because I'm not really that much bigger, this time I just got a little wider and unfornutantly my thighs and butt are a little bigger too! lol. But I wouldn't freak out too much, you'll be fine. Good Luck with your pregancy, I hope your not too sick or anything. And let me tell you it's SOO fun to pregnant with a toddler running around too. lol.

I agree with Kathryn O. Ask your doc to check for heartbeat in more than one area. All my doctor ever heard was one, but it was always in a different place than the last time. Everyone said, "You always show early with a second pregnancy", and "boys might be bigger than girls", and other crazy stuff. When we had the ultrasound at 20 weeks, I about fell off the table when the tech told me there were two in there! From then on, I had to have ultrasounds monthly.
Don't worry; just be glad you can have a heads up before 20 weeks! God bless you!

everyone is different I was just recently pregnant with #2 and gained 55 pounds. Most of which was due to swelling in the legs and butt. For me it only got worse after I had her. But yes you will get bigger faster than your first. The reason for this is you will have and already stretched uterus. You may notice that you are carrying a little lower due to the same thing. As usual eat right and continue to excersice, Walking and swimming are very low impact and will help you and baby stay healthy. But of course always consult your OB first.

I had a very normal first pregnancy with a vaginal delivery... didn't show probably until 6 months? With number two everything was different - I showed right away it seemed and was in maternity wear by 12 weeks! :) I didn't gain anymore weight than my first pregnancy and it came off with just slightly more effort than the first. SO don't worry too much. I think it is very normal - and truth be told, didn't we all feel like cows at some point? There is no way around it! LOL

Best wishes!

I had the same problem with my 2nd one & I had a c-section with the first as well. Gained about 50 lbs with both. Most of it was water that I was retaining. The last 3-4 months I couldn't wear my wedding ring. My shoes even went up a size. I don't know if it has to do with a second baby or the fact that my second baby was a summer baby & the first was a winter baby. Best of luck with your pregnancy & dont' worry about a large belly as long as you have a healthy baby!

It is normal so don't panic. Not to scare you, but maybe it is twins. I had a single pregnancy, then I got pregnant again and was big fast. I couldn't fit into my regular clothes at eight weeks. I had my suspicions, but since twins do not run in our family and they are rare at that, I dismissed the idea. Nevertheless, at week 17, I had a sonogram and there were two babies! A double blessing! Good luck! Kati
