19 Month Old with Yeast Infection

My 19 month old girl was on antiboitics for three weeks for her ear infection. Now she has a yeast infection. Her diaper is irritating her and she now has red bumps and pulls at her diaper. Her pediatrician said to put on an anti fungal twice a day and give her yogurt with live cultures (which she has always had daily). Has anyone had to treat this? Is there anything else I should or shouldn't do? I can only imagine how uncomfortable she is. Thanks.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the great advice. I'm staying at my Mom's while we do some kitchen improvements so leaving the diaper off is not an option right now. I am giving her a little time in between changes to let her dry out. The anti fungal cream has cleared up some of the bumps and I've stopped using her baby wipes unless she is poopy. We are going to look for some probiotics to add to her juice when we get back to Royal Oak. Thanks again - you guys are great! Just what a new mommy needs. :)

My 16 month old daughter recently had a yeast infection too. In addition to the anti-fungal cream, we put a bit of baking soda in her bath water (that helps with diaper rash too) and let her run around for a few minutes at diaper changes to air her out. Unfortunately it took longer than the Dr. said it would to go away, but now after maybe 3 weeks of fighting it she is completely better. Good luck,

My son had had yeast infections and when I brought him to the doctor they perscribed a anti-fungal cream, Nystatan. It can be found in all the over the counter yeast creams, like monostat. I also gave him a baking soda bath to calm the irritation. Give her tylenol or ibprofen for the pain. It really helps.

Hi A..
I have a 22 mth old daughter and about 4 months ago she devolped what the doctors called a yeast infection too. I tried everything under the sun to clear this up. I did use the anti-fungal medicine and it did work alittle, but what i found to work the best was nothing but Gold Bond powder. Another thing to try to protect it from getting irriated any more is to apply a thick amount of vaseline. I found these 2 things very helpful, but i HIGHLY recommend the Gold Bond powder. Good luck

This happened to my daughter when she was about this age. The doctor initially gave me a steroid cream (I don't know why he thought this would help) and I wouldn't give it to her, so he said to soak a cloth diaper in vinigar and put it in her diaper a couple of times a day. I think I did this for a couple of days and it started to go away. Also, if she's got yeast on her skin, she probably has it in her body. Yeast doesn't go away as long as refined carbs and all forms of sugar are taken out of the diet. Better to do this now while she's young and can argue less. Take all snacks and pop out of the house. If she's been on antibiotics, or especially during use of antibiotics and antifungals, she needs to be taking a probiotic every day to rebalance the flora in her intestines. She's probably dysbiotic. The natural flora in our gut keeps yeast and other bacteria in check, and when we take antibiotics or antifungals, or eat too many sweets and refined carbs, we throw the balance out and the yeast takes over. Once you have that fungal infection, it starts to dig in to your intestinal walls and makes little holes which open you up to food allergies, IBS, Chrone's, etc. Not to mention the inflammation in your body that will cause chronic pain. This takes time, of course, but if you don't get the candida in check, it will happen. I'm a living example, and so is my daughter. But try to take sugar away from a life-long carb addict and a 15 year old! I recommend looking up Candida online. Hope this helps!

Hi A.,
The yogurt that normally helps with this wasn't enough to help with the antibiotics. The antibiotics caused this and the yogurt and antifungal will work just fine.

Yes, ask your peditrican for a RX for Nystatin Cream. Put this on especially at nighttime and it should clear it up quickly. My daughter used to get terrible diaper rashes if I didn't change her dirty diapers within 3-5 minutes. When they were really bad (becoming yeast) she would be crying so hard that it would bring me to total tears also. This cream is the only thing that helped her. Good luck, it gets better once they are potty-trained!

apply the yogurt with the live and active cultures topically. also if you use dryer sheets STOP now, as she gets older dryer sheets create a build up on clothing, and can cause yeast infections.

Buy a tube of Lotrimin AF (the kind you use on athlete's foot - you can get generic for cheaper, too) and put it on her when you change her diaper. You are supposed to put it on 3 times a day. When my daughter had one I just put it on each diaper changing so I wouldn't forget. It should help within a day or two and if it doesn't, it isn't a yeast infection and you should go back to the doctor. Don't use desitin or anything else at the same time because if it really is a yeast infection those things will sort of hold in the heat and won't let it heal up as easily. Let her have plenty of "naked time". Good luck - those are no fun but the Lotrimin AF is a miracle I promise!!!

I would recommend getting her on a probiotic. My 2 year old son takes a multi-vitamin/mineral powder each day that also contains a prebiotic and probiotic. There are many benefits to using these products, one is to boost the immune system! Let me know if you would like me to send you more information. I have many articles I can send you! ANGIE

You need to demand that your doctor give the baby a prescription for nystatin cream or ointment. also wen the baby is asleep put a pad under her and let her sleep without a diaper so her skin can get some air. I would avoid using diaper wipes right now, all she need is warm, soapy water after a diaper change. You can also put plain yogurt directly on her skin. But I would demand the nystatin from the doctor. I bet if the doctor had the yeast infection they would have some medicine.

I have read that with women who have had yeast infection they put yogurt on a pad and wore it to get rid of the infection (plain yogurt). Also pouring baking soda water over the infected area a few times a day might help...it should at least cool the area and help with the pain. Hope this might help (from someone who has had a lifetime of yeast infections).

When you are ready to change her next diaper get your hair dryer and put it on the coolest setting and after you have cleaned her up dry her with the dryer for as long as you can and the moisture will dry up and the yeast cannot live without the moisture.

My son is just getting over a skin yeast infection. It is VERY uncomfortable for them. Yeast lives and breads in moist areas. Although she is not potty trained, try letting her skin breathe to speed up the healing process. You may have a potty or two to clean up but it's worth it to not have them so uncomfortable. Keep up with the anti-fungal. Also, once it has cleared, apply A&D healing ointment after diaper changes. This helps keep the skin supple after the anti-fungal which can be drying.

Also, congrats on the foster to adopt program, it's wonderful. My cousin is currently doing this. My parents adopted 4 foster children when I was 10, it's wonderful. Congrats on your lil one.

we have had this problem in the past with my daughter. We have used a perscription cream from the pediatrician and have also used, on another ocassion, an antifungal cream and A&D Ointment mixed equally together on the palm of your hand and then applied to the rash/yeast infection. Also, we have always found that going commando for our daughter seemed to help. We would just put her favorite movie on or get out a fun toy and sit her down on a lap pad or waterproof pad with no diaper on for 1/2 hour to an hour at least a few times a day. Good luck!

You should go to a health food store and get some acidopholous capsules. Break them open and put them in yogurt or applesauce and give them to her. This is one of the active ingredients int he yogurt, but it is highly concentrated, and will get rid of the infection much faster.

The yogurt is the only thing I can think of other than letting her if possible go with out her diaper for a few hours a day. Oatmeal bath(you can find it in the store where they sell bandaids etc.) will help also with children of that age it sooths and cools. I had a step daughter that would get the same thing from antibotics.

You might want to try probiotics also known as acidophilus. These are what your doctor is pushing in the yogurt but your daughter might need a higher amount. You ccan get them at the local health food store or a chiropractors office. Just make sure that they need to be refrigerated.

Look at her diet as well. Anything that she is eating that can turn into sugar needs to be avoided, since sugar allows for infections to continue to thrive.

Go to a health food store and get primadophilus. It was given to us by the pediatrician as a chewable (but easily crushable for a baby). You could also get the powder to add to juice or water. It contains much more active bacteria than any yogurt. Kefir is another alternative with far more active bacteria than yogurt. Good luck.

My daughter had the same problem when she was younger and had an ear infection. The suggestion I was given, which helped alot, was to let her bottom "air out" as much as possible. It can be tough and messy with one so young, since they aren't potty trained, but if you can let her spend time without the diaper, it really does help.

Well, first, a piece of information you may not have; yeast eats cornstarch. If you are using one of the talc-free powders, or even pure cornstarch as a diaper powder, stop immediately, as it will make it a great deal worse. Either replace it with talcum, or one of the medicated powders available, if you still want to powder her.

I can't believe her doctor prescribed an anti-fungal! I have never known anyone who could stomach those... and it is not only cruel and unnecessary (the side effects are just horrible, they really upset stomachs), but the yogurt alone would be sufficient. Especially if you add a half a cup of it to her bath... and bathe her a couple of times a day in warm water, just deep enough for her bum.

Let her be diaper-free for a period of time, a couple of times a day (yeast infections are nicer on toddlers in the summer when they can be outside), to let her dry off well and air out. Some moms find that diapering with cloth (rinsed in hot water with vinegar added and then either line-dried or dried in a hot dryer) without any kind of waterproof cover helps.

Yeast needs warm and damp to survive. Remove one or both and it just dies.

Eventually the anti fungal should work. I used cloth diapers so my kids tended not to get rashes but I had heard that leaving them open to air for periods of time helps speed the healing. (ie right after you change a wet diaper let her leave it off for 15 minutes or use some cloth training pants to let her be more open to the air but yet still catch most of an "accident". I guess it depends on how nice your furniture and carpeting is as to how far you want to go with letting her get more air to her skin!

My daughters got them regularly, Dr. said that because I do it's just something I passed on and their pH is just easily upset. Everytime they would get one, he would prescribe Magic Butt Cream - it's hard to find a pharmacy that will make it but I know some do. It's a combination of Nystation (an anti fungal used to commonly treat thrush), Dysatin and an antacid (I think). We got it the first time when our oldest had Rotavirus and was in the hospital. It worked really well, and really fast. You might see if that is an option for you - it is perscription only so you would need to call the Dr.

Yeast is big in our household. My son gets it often. The ped suggested caladrin (I think that is how it is spelled) It is a pink bottle of powder in the baby section. We use that to keep it at bay. Of course it needs to be treated with an anitfungal cream but the powder is a preventative.
You can also give you child pro-biotics. You can get it at the health food store. Make sure it is for babies and young children. It comes in powder form and can be added to their drink once or twice a day. If it is a warm drink like warmed milk you need to warm it first then add it.
It works great! We just us it a few times a week to keep yeast from returning.

Hi A.,

My daughter went through the same thing when she was 9 months. She developed an ear infection, was on antibiotics for 10 days; the antibiotics gave her diarrhea and what I thought was a bad diaper rash. I took her to the pediatrician after a few days and was told it was a yeast infection. The antifungal cream cleared the infection, I also was told to give her yogurt, which she loves; just be careful when applying it to the affected area (external use only). In addition I began to use cloth diapers--AT HOME ONLY. They are much better for her skin and the environment. I hope she's better soon!

My daughter had the same thing happen at the same age. Ear infections due to cutting so many teeth at once the doc said. Then yeast infection from the antibiotics. Arg!

Looks like you already have a lot of advice. The one thing further I thought I would share is that my daughter potty trained herself at that age. :) It really helped her to be without diapers (I used cloth diapers) and I do think they were irritating right then. I know that is very young to train, but as she really did it herself by saying she had to go, it seemed like a good plan. I wonder if it hurt to have the urine held close to the body? Anyways something good came out of a bad situation, so I was thankful.

Hope it all works out for you!

To help rid the body of the fungus, try boiling 2cups of water then add 2tsp of baking soda, then breathe in the steam.

Baking soda has been proven to stop fungus. Or shall we venture to say, bacteria that feeds on sugar.

Yogurt will not be powerful enought to rebuild the intestinal flora.

hi! my daughter is 19 months old as well and continues getting yeast infections. her Ped. wrote a prescription for nystatin...and said to put it on for 10 days but also just a cpl extra days bc It could take awhile for it to completely heal up and be gone. the yogurt is a great idea I was giving it to my daughter 2x a day and when I slack off is when the infection comes back. Also, its esp hard in the winter bc more than likely shes all bundled up so her body has no room to breathe...but yes the meds and keep her as dry as possible at all times (its hard I know!) but Im really hoping that when the warmer weather rolls around in shes not in layers that will help. I think some kids are more prone to things than others but the steps you are taking seem great as well...

My advice is pretty lowkey. I have 4 children, and a couple of them, including a boy, were prone to yeast infections. Make sure you apply the cream generously everywhere where she has the bumps and around those areas so it doesn't spread. The drier you can keep her, even if you can leave her diaper off for a little while, the better: yeast grows best in moist conditions. Some friends of mine, when the infection was too bad, would put the yogurt (plain, obviously) directly on the infection.

My daughter had frequent problems with yeast infections. Her pediatrician prescribed a cream as well (Ketacanazole?)
The best thing I can suggest is to let her air out as much as possible, frequent changes, blotting vs. hard wiping and make sure she is dry before you close her diaper. I used to blow down there. A friend of mine used a blowdrier on low, cool setting. Whatever works!!!

My daughter has had them a couple of times, she is 4 now but she was in diapers and pull ups when they happened. Since you are at home with her pick a some time where you are going to be just hanging out and not running around town. Have her diaper free for an hour just to get some fresh clean dry air. The diaper is hot and can make it so much worse. Essentially though the anti fungal cream and yogurt really are the best treatments out there. Make sure she keeps her hands away from the diaper area too, so that the yeast infection does not spread. Good Luck.
