1 Year Old Doesn't like Milk

I have an almost one year old son who doesn't like whole milk at all. I sneak the milk into his food in order for him to drink it. He is still eating mashed up baby food. He only has 2 teeth so far.

He loves yogurt though and he eats 3 tubs (12 oz. total in a day) of Yo Baby yogurt daily since he was about 10 months. I wonder if that is too much yogurt for him to eat on a daily basis. I would like to know if it is okay for him to not drink milk but make it up the calcium intake with just the yogurt alone? He also eats slices of cheddar cheese but he only eats a little bit a day.

He loves water and would drink it all day long. Some mom suggested mixing half formula with half whole milk but he didn't like formula since around 8 months and I have been sneaking it in his food in order for him to take it.

Thanks.

He doesn't need cow's milk. That mik is really designed for baby cows anyways. So, don't worry! That is wonderful that he loves water!

Milk isn't necessary, and humans have a very hard time digesting cows milk. If he's eating yogurt, thats plenty of dairy a day. My boys are 8 and almost 5, neither drink milk and both are healthy as can be.

A well balanced diet of veggies, fruits, grains, and leafy greens are what children need. I would not feed him jarred baby food, they are very low in nutrition, and at a year old he needs real food to meet his needs.

Your baby doesn't need whole milk if he's getting other sources of the nutrients milk provide (primarily calcium, protein & fat which is needed during his early years).

I think you should aim for less servings of yogurt--3 tubs seems like a lot. Maybe check with your pediatrician about it. Our pediatrician gave a really easy to use handout that spelled out exactly what a serving size is for a child that age and how many servings the child needs per day of each general type of food (dairy, carb/bread, fruits, veg, protein, fat).

Just because he only has 2 teeth doesn't mean he doesn't have really strong gums--you can start giving him very small bites of stuff like cooked carrots & other veg & fruits, small bites of lightly toasted bread, small bits of cheese (we started with low sodium cottage cheese; he loved it mixed with cooked peas). We also bought the freeze-dried fruits in the baby food aisle, and our little guy loved those.

Hello,

My one year old does not like milk, and she also has only two teeth so far. If he's nursing 3 times within 24 hours, you don't need to be supplementing his liquid intake at all. If he's not nursing at all, then try something else other than milk. We tried many things and I finally discovered that our baby loves kefir. I found whole milk kefir in a jug and she drinks that a little bit throughout the day. She also has pieces of fresh fruit, which provide her with natural liquids. As far as yogurt, it sounds like too much to me, but I could be wrong. My baby loves the Brown Cow, cream on top, yogurt, and eats about the equivalent of half of an adult size yogurt. Another great way to get calcium, is to make broccoli muffins...I've been doing this and she loves it. Just boil some broccoli, mash it up by hand or in the food processor and add: 1 egg, some milk, flour, salt and pepper, and a little butter or oil, pour in to muffin tins and bake until puffy. Sorry...no exact measurements, I just do it by eye.

Good luck and try not to obssess about the milk...he doesn't need to drink milk yet, and he might never...it's okay!

You really can't eat TOO much yogurt (unless it's causing the runs). I've never been a milk drinker and my kids really aren't either. As my oldest has gotten older he likes the Horizon Dairy milk boxes of flavored milk as a treat, but that's it. I grew up eating cheese and your kid can eat cheese and is eating lots of yogurt. Dark greens have calcium too! I also give my kids calcium fortified orange juice and apple juice, so do that and you don't need to worry.

I despise white milk, and my son isn't crazy about it .We put 1/2 packet of vanilla Carnation Instant breakfast in his milk and he loved it. IT's also got lots of vitamins and protein. Hope this helps!

How did you introduce the milk? My boys would not take it at first either, so I started with 3/4 formula (or breast milk if that is what he is used to), and onlu 1/4th milk, than over the course of a couple of weeks slowly increase the milk to formula ratio so he can slowly get used to the taste. This worked great with my boys. I also let them drink chocolate milk often. It adds very little sugar to their diets and they love it. It is like a treat to them.

I actually just had this conversation with my ped at my son's 9 mth appointment. My concern was that he won't like milk. I've breastfed him since birth, and he has never taken well to a bottle. I've tried to give him a little formula in a sippy cup, but he just bats it away. He will, however, drink water from a sippy cup. Well, my doctor surprised me when she said that milk is overrated. There are plenty of calcium rich foods out there that can be substituted for milk. Make sure that he is getting enough to drink otherwise, so he doesn't get dehydrated. I would talk to your ped at his 1 yr checkup and get their suggestions.

My son is nearly 2 1/2 years old and JUST started drinking milk. For the longest time I couldn't get him to drink milk and the only reason he started drinking milk was because he wanted to drink coffee like daddy. I started by giving him a coffee mug of milk with just a little coffee mixed in, then I went to milk with some chocolate mixed in, now I can get him to drink milk plain.

I am not recommending milk with coffee in it. I am just telling the process of getting our son to drink milk and letting you know that it is possible your child won't drink milk now but maybe in a few months or even a few years he will begin to drink milk. Even if he doesn't ever start enjoying milk, there are a lot of other places he can get calcium. You can also find calcium in eggs, small bony fish, soy products, most nuts, fortified cereals; leafy green vegetables, especially broccoli... I probably wouldn't worry too much about him getting a lot of his calcium from milk just yet. Yogurt is a good source. I would also look online for other sources.

Neither my 2 or 4 year old will drink milk. We tried it all. Mixing with this, mixing with that, to no avail. Instead we do calcium fortified OJ in the morning (8 oz), and then make sure they get calcium from other sources such as yogurt, cheese, broccoli, fortified breads, etc. They're both healthy, thriving little girls.
Our ped isn't concerned, and neither are we anymore. Besides, what other mammal drinks another mammal's milk? (Yuk!) :)
