My daughter has/had an awful time pooping for as long as I can remember. They told me to do prune juice, prunes, etc..

I finally was at the ER for a different reason and I told the Dr. and they said it was not common. He did a rectal exam.. saw nothing wrong thank goodness.. but prescribed her Miralax. It is a powder substance that we put in her milk every morning and he has not had a problem since.

Try a little "Gripe Water" they sell it at Babie's R Us. Worked like a charm for us. What also helped was taking a rectal temp. That activity seemed to get things going. Rubbing her tummy gently, down by her intestinal area and also gently moving her legs like she was riding a bike also seemed to help.

It sounds like your daughter is constipated. If you haven’t already, try feeding her lots of liquids, and fibrous foods such as raisins, broccoli, and apples. You also might want to cut back on the amount of breads, pasta and chesses that she eats. This change in diet should get her going. If not, take her to her pediatrician for further advice. I hope this helps! The best of luck to you both.

Hi A.. Do you formula feed or breast? Second have you given her mylicon? its gas drops for infants and safe for every feeding if necessary, its amazing and makes the little ones feel so much better when blocked. My son is breast fed and he had a little trouble every now and then the pediatrician described to me like this he doesn't know how to poop so yes she probably is miserable and when it comes it will be like and explosion but the mylicon should give some relief. I also you to help him poop by bending his legs to his tummy or bicycling them it seemed to help a lot too. and somwthing I learned from about 1 month on bring extra clothes cause you getting to head to toe time of pooping! good luck hope she gets somw relief soon if not don't feel bad abot calling the doctor it will set your mind at ease and her tummy plus that why we pay them so much!

My advise would be to call your doctor. I was under the impression with my baby (Now 14 months old) that babies should poop at least once every day and if they don't it is not good for them. It may be something as simple as she is not digesting the formula properly and you need to dilute it a little more or something. But again she is very young and the doctor should be the one to make that call.

If you have begun adding anything to her bottles then you should stop. When my daughters were about 1 month the pediatrician switched their formula to an Enfamil to help them gain weight faster. The results were that they did gain weight but they had a terrible time pooping. I was encourage to give them Karo syrup mixed with water (1 teaspoon w/ about 6 oz. of water). I would warm it a little before giving it to them and it worked really well. After a while it didn't work so I purchased infant suppositories and cut them in thirds and used them twice a day until their bowels loosened a bit and they began going on their own again.

Hi, A.!
Since the baby is so little, I would call a doctor. What I know from experience is that formula tends to constipate babies while breast milk keeps them on track. I don't know which one you use but I would call the doctor.

When I switched to the formula, my baby got constipated and I gave her a little bit (one oz) of prune juice mixed with water. But she was three months old.

Is your baby breastfed? It is normal for breastfed babies to poop as often as after every feeding to as little as once a week. My little boy (4 mos) poops about once a week. When he was smaller he seemed to have more discomfort from gas, so I would "bicycle" his legs and rub his belly. That seemed to help. Good luck!

hi A.,
first of all, KEEP THE DOCTOR'S OFFICE INFORMed EVERY 3 DAYS IF NO BOWEL MOVEMENT. It could be a development problem in the intestine!
Are you breast feeding or bottle feeding? Breast milk can dry a baby's system if a mother is taking herbal teas or caffine in coffee. Any diet altering herb like hoodia or something to suppress the mother's appetite can dry the baby's system out. Anything that will give you a dry mouth feeling can dry the intestine and constipate the bowel for the baby. After the birth of my first child, I was taking antibiotics for yeast infection and it altered the production of my breast milk. If you take any medication it could affect the moisture in the baby's bowel. If you are on a high fiber diet, your baby may need moisture in a water bottle. Tell your doctor if your high fiber has slowed or dried your bowel movement. Fresh or frozen green vegetables worked safest for me. Eat at least 1 apple each day. Eat spinach and broccoli every day. Eat dark greens like kale, turnips, mustards and collards. Eat salads on sandwichs and for snacks. Eat at least one orange rather than drink juice. Drink more soy milk and fresh water.
If you are not breast feeding, then ask your doctor if you can give your a little pediolite. In the old days we gave the baby distilled water sweetened with a little karo syrup to regulate the bowel. 1/2teaspoon karo syrup in 2 to 3 ounces of water. At least, one ounce of water about one hour after feeding until 3 ounces of water was consumed in a 24 hour period. It did help keep the bowels open. The trick is not to substitute water for formula because the total nutrition is in the formula. Most often when enough formula is consumed the bowels are regulated. Sometimes certain formula don't agree with the baby. So, let the doctor know because the baby's nutrition is being short changed if the formua is not being digested and eliminated well. If too much iron is in your vitamins or you are still taking your prenatal vitamins talk to your peditrician. If you are giving your baby vitamins, tell the baby's peditrician because sometimes the iron in the vitamins might also constipate the baby while she is so young.
KEEP THE DOCTOR INFORMED EVERY 3 DAYS IF THE BOWELS HAVE NOT MOVED because SOMETHING ELSE COULD BE THE PROBLEM. Congrations and many blessings to your family!

My daughter did the same thing right around then. The nurse when I called told me to give her a little bit of pure white grape juice (like an ounce) and take a thermometer and stimulate her bowels by basically rectally taking her temp and just moving it in a circle. (That was hard for me to do!). You can keep giving them the juice until they poop. My daughter NEVER pooped daily until she got on solids. Hope this helps!

my doctor told me to put a couple of drops of milk of magnesia in their bottle with their formula but do not let them drink it all, just enough , you will actually hear it going through their system. it works almost instantly. if you dont feel comfortable with giving him or her medicine. the old fashion way, is to take a q tip with some vaseline and masage the outer part of the anus to stimulate him. but you aught to know that my doctor recomended, that the child should not go without a bm for more than 3 days. it is allways a good idea to call the doctor for advise, just incase there is something more to it. good luck to you.

Is your daughter breastfed? It is normal for breastfed babies to have long gaps between bowel movements. Their body uses most of the nuetrients and all other goodies that are in breastmilk. My daughter went two weeks one time. However, beware when it does come! There will be lots!

First what are you feeding her breast milk or formula. If it is formula think about switching to another brand Very best is best for their little tummies. If you are breastfeeding (congrats way to go mom) give her a little water with each time you nurse, but daddy will have to feed it to her so she will stay on the breast you don't want to confuse her. Best of luck.

My daughter had the exact same problem. I had to switch her to Low Iron formula. I would be concerned with using the Karo syrup as it would only be a temporay fix to the problem that would add unnecessary sugar to the baby's diet (espscially if there is diabetes in your family or if you had gestational diabetes during your pregnancy). Once the baby is around 4 - 4 1/2 months old start weening the baby back onto regular formula so the baby can get used to digesting the iron in the formula. The baby's liver has stockpiled enough iron the get her up to 6 months old. I hope this helps.

My son had problems with constipation after he went to strictly formula at about 3 months (6 months ago). My pediatrician had me give him a couple of ounces of Pedialyte and it worked every time (2-3 oz. at 3-4 months of age). She also told me that sometimes taking a rectal temp will stimulate the muscle and allow them to go. My Dr. told me that some babies only go every 3 days (but, we were talking in reference to 3-4 month olds) and that it's the consistency that is important (soft stools, not hard balls). BUT, I would call your Dr. before doing anything. Especially with her being so young. Plus, your Dr. should be aware in case this becomes an issue. Just my opinion. Also, most young babies do seem to struggle to have a BM, even though it's a soft consistency. I read that this may be because the rectal muscles haven't matured yet. Sorry this is such a long post, but we had a lot of poop issues and I just remember how worried I was. Hope something in here helps!

This happened when my daughter was that age. The pediatrician recommended a little water between feedings if the baby will drink it. Another thing the pediatrician recommended is putting half an ounce to an ounce of prune juice in a bottle and giving that to the baby. Breast feeding didn't work for me, so I was easily able to get her to drink the prune juice from a bottle. I don't know if you're breast feeding, but even if you are you might want to consider introducing one bottle a day with the prune juice. I used to mix it with my breast milk or formula and my daughter loved it!!! It worked like a charm every time!!! Good luck!

Hi! I had the same problem when my baby girl was the same age. Even though I was breastfeeding, she would sometimes go as long as several days with no bowel movements. My pediatrician recommended waiting it out if she wasn't acting uncomfortable. If it went on longer than two days, to give a teaspoon of prune juice or apple juice(100% juice, no sugar added). I've heard Caro syrup is not recommended anymore by doctors(except those old school ones). I never gave my girl juice though. She would always manage to go on her own with no apparent discomfort. Now that she is eating solids, she's a regular once-a-day gal. Good luck with it!

I assume you aren't breastfeeding. They don't usually have that problem when you do. If you are, then they don't need to poop daily because there isn't much waste product to breastmilk. We switched formulas when we ran into this problem and it worked for us. I went from Similac to Good Start. My logic was that it was already broken down into "comfort proteins" and should be easier to digest. Our little one went from constant diarrhea on breastmilk to constipation on Similac due to an immature digestion system, which is very common. The Good Start worked like a charm. I didn't even chance it with my son and we had no problems. It is also the only one that tastes anywhere close to breastmilk, so the transition is easier from it to formula. If she is constipated, try apple or white grape juice in the mean time. Good luck!

Oh both of my boys did that no poop stunt when they were that young. I drove the pediatrician crazy with my phone calls about that! I was finally told by my midwife that breastfed babies often go a week to 10 days between bowel movements, and that it isn't a concern unless the baby won't eat or acts like he/she is in pain. Babies often look like they are struggling to poop, but that's normal too, the red scrunched up face, the grunting, the look of straining. Even though it looks just awful, it is ok. My 10 month old finally started going daily when he was 6 months old.

yeah, I think every baby goes through this. I never did the thermometer thing that was mentioned, he would have had to be in REALLY bad shape for me to try that. Good old apple juice work for me every time! One ounce apple juice with one once water. I only had to do that once every few days, but you can do it as often as you need to. It is true, it is not a problem unless your baby is really being affected by it and in pain. I went with the apple juice when my son's grunting and squirming started to keep him from sleeping at night. I have also heard that sitting them in warm water can help to. Hope she gets some relief!!
